Women's Voices Women's Votes has another "unfortunate coincidence"
So Many Coincidences
05.11.08 -- 1:12AM By Josh Marshall

Women's Voices Women's Votes has another "unfortunate coincidence" in the timing of its voter registration mailings, this time in West Virginia.

Secretary of State says mass mailing has caused confusion

The Secretary of State's office is reminding first-time voters that the deadline to register to vote in Tuesday's primary already has passed.

Betty Ireland said she's worried that a mass mailing aimed at getting young women in West Virginia to register to vote might cause confusion.

A group called "Women's Voices. Women Vote" sent out more than 16,000 mailers to unmarried women in the state after April 22, the last day to register in time to vote Tuesday.

People who've never voted can still register, but they won't be eligible to cast a ballot in the primary.

4. The Reason They Do This
Is because it's right around the primaries when unregistered voters feel a little twinge about not taking part. Then they often procrastinate and forget about it. This operation times itself to hit them when they're most likely to wish they'd registered, and gives them reinforcement.

3. They seem about as well organized
as the Clinton campaign.

But registering new voters for November is still a worth goal, even if they missed the primary deadline.

7. I don't see a big problem in this case.
Though they should make it clear that this is related to the general election and that people who are already registered do not need to register again.

The problem last time was that they encouraged people to register by mail after mail-in registration was too late for the primary but while in-person registration was still going on. I'm sure people mailed in the packets thinking that they could then vote in the primary when they were actually missing an opportunity that still existed to register in-person.
