Clinton camp: "Hillary is within striking distance of winning the popular vote nationwide"

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/12/campaign.wrap/?iref=hpmostpop

<snip>

Her campaign is renewing the argument that if she leads in the popular vote, she should be the Democratic nominee.

"Hillary is within striking distance of winning the popular vote nationwide -- a key part of our plan to win the nomination," campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said in a letter to supporters Sunday.

"That means we need every last vote we can get in West Virginia on Tuesday and in the races to follow."

Her campaign is trying to turn out the vote in the remaining six contests, hoping the popular vote argument will persuade superdelegates to endorse her instead of Obama.

5. That would be fine if the Clinton campaign could actually..you know...COUNT...
...they will NOT be able to get the lead in the popular vote WITHOUT adding in FL and MI...neither of which held legal primaries this year...

But then this sort of fuzzy math is to be expected from a campaign that is so poor at managing it's own money that it is $20 million IN THE HOLE...

6. Wouldn't that be a great ad for McCain?
"Senator Obama couldn't even win his party's popular vote. How can he expect to represent the country if he can't represent his own party"?

Is that what Hillary's trying to do with her scorched earth policy? Make sure there's something embarrassing in Obama's win to ensure his loss in November?

8. Sad when a presidential campaign is ignorant of how presidential elections work
The party nominee is whoever gets the most delegates, popular vote be damned. Even in the general election, the popular vote is irrelevant; we vote for a slate of Electors and, in most states, mandated how the state Electors will vote on their first ballot.

10. There is no "popular vote nationwide"
that has a goddamn thing to do with how we choose our nominee. Why am I even responding to this tripe at all at this stage? Somebody help me. I need an intervention.

I am authorized to say that the action we are now reporting may well bring the war within measurable distance of its end. -1984
