W. Virginians are toothless, stoopid, inbred morans? Really?
Is that what this democratic party has become? Is this the party of inclusion and tolerance or the party or exclusion and hate?

Yes, many people in West Virginia are poor. Yes, many people in West Virginia have not had the privilege of higher education. And some people in West Virginia may hold longstanding prejudices that others find offensive.

But I never thought I would find myself associated with a group who could so blatantly display ignorant bigotry such as I am seeing on this site today.

The hypocrisy is startling.

Another member, "Overseas", said it better than I could:

"It saddens me to see the comments people are making. Yes it has been disheartening to see slanderous comments applied to Democrats in other regions. I have hated the HRC team's racial slurs but also detest the classist slandering done to people in rural states that I've seen here. We don't need your ugly sneering attitudes. Obama could actually win these people over because he has fought to organize disadvantaged people for many years."

Classic reverse racism argument. People with no teeth can GET teeth. People with dark skin have dark skin FOREVER. Don't give me that bullshit - this apologizing for people who "hold longstanding prejudices" makes me sick to my stomach. You enable these people - you give them permission to continue to hate and discriminate and "hold prejudices."

You go, baby. You should be proud with your self-righteous bad self!

So GODDAMN SICK of the rationalizations for racism on this board.

People who are poor can not get dental care. They are probably poor forever, whatever color they are. I'm not apologizing for anyone's prejudice just objecting to those who would ridicule any group for what they are, where they come from, what color skin they have, etc.

The people displaying their ignorant prejudices on this board are the ones being given permission to discriminate. They are being cheered on by equally bigoted and close minded people.

That's right, baby. I am always proud to stand up for people that can't stand up for themselves. Standing up for one group does not mean putting down another. Be sick all you want.

The nearly 1,000 acre complex houses the FBI's largest division, which operates the National Crime Information Center, Uniform Crime Reporting System, Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, and the National Incident-Based Reporting System...and the workers at the IRS's main data center is in Martinsburg, West Virginia... Data from every federal tax return filed in the United States is processed and stored at the IRS Martinsburg Computing Center. Your W4, W2, 940, and 1099 filings are processed there, too. Martinsburg also processes information for the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, which monitors large cash and other suspicious transactions and assists law enforcement with money laundering and terrorist funding investigations...

I've been insulted on this board for being young. I've been insulted on this board for having a college degree. I've been insulted on this board for, incredibly, living in Brooklyn. I've been (wrongly) called a Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearing, Latte-sipping, trust-fund BABY. Why? Because I made the mistake of mentioning bits of information about myself, after it became known that I was an Obama voter.

So this "dark day in the history of DU" or whatever you want to call it? It's merely the continuation of a series of race-based, age-based, location-based, income-based, education-based insults coming from EACH side, aimed squarely at fellow Democrats. It's tragic, but it's hardly unusual around here since the Primaries started.

And as a person who never once used any of these derogatory remarks you mention, I outright REFUSE to apologize for other assholes making them.

32. Some people are definitely saying that - in both camps.
It's easy to stereotype people you've never met but let's not do the same in suggesting that "all" Democrats think this or even that this is coming exclusively from Obama supporters. Hillary, herself, stated that she was the one to could get white working class voters who did not have much education. While she didn't call them inbred the connotation was clear - she was going after those low information voters.

I think you know that most of us don't think that all West Virginians or all southerners meet some stereotypical rendering so let's be mature about this and realize that some people in both camps have these prejudices but many more actively work against them.

65. I can't argue that.
I agree that some people here are using WV and KY as easy targets for their anger and ignorance just as some others would use African Americans or undocumented workers. I have posted some good words about these states as I know from experience how warm hearted they are, in general (my family comes from KY, TN and WV).

That doesn't take away the fact that despair has left some very strong marks on them, however. When people talk about bitterness and desperation, the textbook example could be Appalachia. My family there is hurting, just as their neighbors are and have for generations. When you have generations of the neglect and servitude these people have had to endure you will often find a need for scapegoats. The corporations who use them for fodder are too large and complex to be easy targets so other oppressed groups often have to serve in their place.

By the way, the ugliest sight I've ever seen was a one beautifully forested Kentucky mountain range after it had been strip mined.

95. Wouldn't it be great to bring back the concept of "minority rights"?
So many people have been taught to believe that minority rights is only for people of color, but the reality is that it's there to keep the mob from crushing independent thoughts and creeds. In fact, if we look at minorities as those who have the least power then a majority of us could perhaps understand how the true elites have taken our rights from us.

112. I personally do not give a rat's ass
what others say about my state. I have made many good friends here, and I enjoy the beauty and slower pace of life this area affords.

That being said, there are many in this region who can be safely called Rednecks, who go beyond the term "ignorant" and go straight to "stupid". (Stupid being what i see as willful ignorance, a trait that many seem to consider a good thing).

I accept this as being part of the human condition, and assume that they will always be this way, or , at the very best, that they will see the errors of their ways eventually.

On rereading, it does come across as a broad based claim. My point was more the question of why we would tolerate this kind of bigotry on a progressive democratic site. I was not trying to call out the 98% of posters you refer to, just the other 2% that are making this a place of hatred and intolerance.

Cbayer, Pay no attention to the Troglodites.

The only thing that matter is that a Dem is elected to the highest office.

The Primaries are (almost) over, and it is obviouse we have a winner.

Your job is to educate the masses to ensure that we move forward.

Trust me... I have seen meany blogs downgrading my own state (Colorado). But we are in a fine possition now. Liberal Governor (2006) and Dems controlling both the House and Senate in only the last 2 years!! Try not to worry so much. Our great country differs from county to county.

I have a feeling the majority of folks in your state will support the Dem nominee no matter who it is. At least I hope so.

I started out supporting Clinton, but now support Obama, but I also know your state supports Clinton overwhelmingly. But that is OK too. The only thing that matters is that "whom ever the final candidate may be" we must "circle the wagons".

Otherwise, we are fucked as a nation and a people. Save the Earth of course.

Chin up!

The Whole World is counting on us all!

Best regards :)

I do not think I could bear it if we did.

I have already had my say in the Caucus back in February. Your say happens tomorrow.

Our future depend not on Clinton or Obama. It relies on our vote and support of the Dem nominee in the end.

We cannot afford 4 - 8 years of more of the same.

We will die as a nation if we do nothing positive.

98. You help the poor by embracing them. Read the liberation theologists. You become one with
them. You empower them to help themselves. So much of the problem is that they feel ashamed and shit upon and ignored and reviled. Ignoring them does not make the problem better. Every person who has ever done any kind of social work with an under privileged group knows that you do not toss money down from above. You work with the group, helping it to find its strength, giving it gentle nudges while it comes up with its own solutions.

Obama turned his face away from West Virginia. Jesse Jackson did not do that in 1988, even though the polls said that he would lose. I voted for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 Democratic Primary without any reservation. He was exactly the kind of man I wanted to have as president. I had no reservations about his commitment to social justice.

discriminated against. but that's me. I feel our world is swimming in opportunities to widen our horizons. Those same computers that many are getting off with porn at are the computers that could connect them to other people of all colors, religions, backgrounds, etc.

The fact that people DON'T do so shows their laziness and ignorance. Does the fact that people are SO COMPLETELY overwhelmingly for Hillary despite the fact that she has no chance to beat this black guy in the primary mean they are racist? No, but it does give one pause. Why is this state so overwhelmingly for Hillary when even North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, etc. are not? Because take the southern man's racism and subtract the black people from the equation and you have an unreconstructed view of the world that is isolated in the back woods.

"The fact that people DON'T do so shows their laziness and ignorance."

Why are so many Obama supporters sounding like up-by-your-own-bootstraps Republicans? Seems to me, all it would take would be for Rush to start wearing Birkenstocks and using the Grateful Dead for bumper music, and he could have a whole new audience of dittoheads.

110. I'm sorry you're offended
But I just read an article and the reporter was talking to a person who voted for Gore and Kerry, but is not voting for Obama because his dad is from Nigeria. If you hate people from Africa at least get the country right. Another article said that a man was voting for Clinton because Michelle Obama is an atheist. Do these people reflect all West Virginians? No. But some people are predicting a 90-10/80-20 victory there, which I believe has not happened in any other state. Certainly in no state this late in the election.

113. I grew up in SE Ohio, about a half-hour drive from Parkersburg, WV.
Edited on Mon May-12-08 08:59 PM by smoogatz
Even though the county I grew up in was (and remains) the third poorest in Ohio, it was a paradise of affluence, education and progressivism compared to pretty much anything on the other side of the Ohio river. While all the classist name-calling is despicable, it's true that much of Appalachia is stuck in a kind of cultural, political and economic vortex from which there's no easily evident means of escape. Wherever white poverty is rampant, racism tends to follow—it's all about economic competition, and the sense that many poor, rural whites have that programs like affirmative action stack the deck even more thoroughly against them. WV and KY also have two of the worst public school systems in the U.S., not because their citizens wouldn't like better schools, but because their median incomes and property values are so low. It's easy to sneer and stereotype, especially if you're the kind of classist creep that's given to sneering at and stereotyping the rural poor, but the rest of us should try to remember that Appalachia isn't some third world nation: the system that perpetuates the poverty, lack of education and lack of opportunity there is the same corporatist system most of us despise. If you want to be a real progressive, fight mountaintop removal and the literal destruction of what's left of Appalachia's environment, culture and economy. If you want to play a snide, sneering, elitist douchebag posing as a progressive on the internets, keep up the inbreeding jokes, by all means.

people don't like to be threatened with being called a racist if they don't vote for a particular candidate. that shit may have worked in the dem primary, but it will not work in the GE.

129. I did not assign it to all DU or all Obama supporters.
I object to the fact that this kind of bigotry is found here at all, let alone tolerated and even cheered. I said absolutely nothing about the culprits being a part of one camp or another. And it was a lot more than one person. Just look at this thread. It's rampant. Should I go after them all individually?

137. The Old and Southerners: fair game for the cognoscenti
Many of our Southern brothers and sisters have pointed it out repeatedly in the seven years I've been a habitue of this august and stimulating hell-hole: they're the group that seems to be universally dismissable by the smug, cosmopolitan lefty choir. There's a lot of truth to that, and it's not good.

There's a sanctimonious streak to the human critter, and it seems to be pretty broad and quite an equal-opportunity affliction. Witness all the "Mcthuselah" and "Grampa McLame" posts, too: it's perfectly fine to slag and humiliate our seniors, even though there's a deep and obvious cruelty to doing so, as well as an arrogant dismissal of the value of experience.

The sad dynamic of the downtrodden is that they tend to grant themselves a moral waiver from the comportment they demand of others. This manifests itself in the many japes and dismissals of the pigment-challenged waspyfolk and in many other snide and backhanded rejoinders along the way.

Identifying oneself as an unfairly trampled victim is a sure-fire fast-track to sanctimoniousness for many, when it should be a calm path to understanding and pluralism.

Fuck that crap, though, people who don't like my candidate are subhuman, and even if some unsavory sorts love my hero, they're really not all that bad and it's not their fault anyway, you unmitigated so-and-so.

The beat goes on.

Rest assured: this all comes back to haunt us in the end, and for a party that's supposed to be about inclusion, flailing accusations against vast groups is not only counterproductive, it's deeply hypocritical and just plain obvious.

Sigh. What a mess.

138. I stay here because there are people like you.
I guess it is the nature of the internet forum that prohibits leadership. The strong and clear voices like yours are rarely heard. Here you have posted one of the most compelling thoughts I have read on this site, and it will be buried. Few will see it and many will miss the opportunity to be inspired. The leaders on this board are bullies. The true leaders are merely watching.

What a mess indeed.

Amid the din, it's often hard to keep in mind that we're not all alone.

That was very nice, and you're right: the shadow world is very alive. Many of the most sentient of the beings around here ARE actually around here right now; they're just so jostled by the immediate prospects that they seem to merely watch more than post.

It promises to be a very eventful year, so take it as it comes and take care.

It's a totally alternative lifestyle that not many have the opportunity to experience. I am extraordinarily lucky and thankful to live on my boat and live so simply.

You are also right about this: I can make fun of boaters, but not people who live in trailer parks.

146. My one of my college roommates lived on a boat
Family owned a boat dealership, so I know those people a little. I was amused by the disdain he showed for motorboat (OK, I don't even remember if they called them motorboats, but you know what I mean--boats with motors rather than sails) people--from where I stood, they had a lot more in common with the sailing people than they did with my people, who are strictly bass-boat types.

Happy sailing! :toast:

160. Imagine the outrage
if similar comments were made about other minority groups. Given that sexism seems to flower here also, I'd say many of the Obama supporters, who cry "racism" at every opportunity are actually rather selective in their bigotry. Its a sign of poor upbringing and low thinking.

Real Democrats don't think this way.
