Now John McCain is an environmentalist? I think not....
McCain Scores a ZERO on the Environment

Arizona Senator Skipped Every Crucial Vote in 2007

Washington, D.C.--In the 2007 National Environmental Scorecard released today by the League of Conservation Voters, John McCain receives a score of ZERO. McCain was the only member of Congress to skip every single crucial environmental vote scored by the organization, posting a score lower than Members of Congress who were out for much of the year due to serious illnesses--and even lower than some who died during the term. By contrast, the average Member of Congress scored a 53 in 2007. McCain posts a lifetime score of only 24. http://www.sierraclub.org/pressroom/releases/pr2008-02-21.asp

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee swept into Portlandon Monday to deliver a major address outlining his plan to "re-establish America's environmental leadership in the world." Here's a hint about how he'll do it: The McCain campaign says the candidates wants to "mobilize market forces."

That may sound good, but as Gene Karpinski, the president of the bipartisan League of Conservation Voters, says, "To his credit, Senator McCain wants to do something serious about global warming, but his proposal falls far short of what the science says we need to do today. He has not substantively improved his plan over the bill he introduced years ago -- legislation that the science now shows is out of date."

Of particular concern is McCain's determination to mobilize the wrong market forces. " is troubling that he continues to support taxpayer subsidies for a mature industry like nuclear which has yet to resolve its waste disposal problem," says Karpinski. "It would be far more cost-effective to invest in renewable energy like the wind energy plant he is visiting today. Better still would be a call for a renewable electricity standard, something he has voted against time and time again."

1. I just read about that land swap ...
http://www.idaho-democrats.org/ht/display/ReleaseDetails/i/1170571

On the same day John McCain gave a speech aimed at repositioning himself as a "moderate" for the general election by claiming to be a "conservationist," the Washington Post highlights Senator McCain's true priorities. According to the report, Senator McCain reversed himself and backed legislation resulting in a land swap that allowed one of his biggest donors to develop federal park land despite concerns from forestry officials that the deal would short-change taxpayers. Senator McCain "became a key figure in pushing the deal through Congress after the rancher and his partners hired lobbyists that included McCain's 1992 Senate campaign manager, two of his former Senate staff members (one of whom has returned as his chief of staff), and an Arizona insider who was a major Senator McCain donor and is now bundling campaign checks."

3. I recieved an email about him appearing with Oregon Governor Kulongoski
Here is the email:

OR-D Gov. Kulongoski Gives McCain Environmental Cover
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/12/171015/899/216/514396

"Who doesn't love a good, traitorous Democrat? Today,
Governor Ted Kulongoski flanked John McCain at his
climate change event here in Oregon. Just his very
presence lends legitimacy to McCain's claims of
bi-partisanship and his severely empty environmental
rhetoric.

Oh, and would you be surprised that he was one of
Hillary's earliest superdelegates? Because I'm not.

This kind of faint praise and tacit approval by a
Democratic official only serves to prop up McCain's
false image as a different sort of Republican. It is
designed to help restore McCain's damaged maverick
brand. Is this as bad as Lieberman making his
grotesque claims about Obama and Hamas on CNN? No. But
it is disturbing, to say the least -- and I am usually
not one for conspiracy theories.

I refuse to believe that Kulongoski is daft enough to
not see the implications here. Our primary is next
week, a primary that will put the exclamation point at
the end of Obama's claim to the nomination, and no
less than the governor is out helping the Republican
nominee.

Can we please have our party back now?"
