Cobb bar protested as racist for Obama T-shirts (poll on the left too)
Mulligan's selling shirts with 'Curious George' picture

By CHRISTIAN BOONE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/13/08

Marietta tavern owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" scrolled underneath, are "cute." But to a coalition of critics, the shirts are an insulting exploitation of racial stereotypes from generations past.

"It's time to put an end to this," said Rich Pellegrino, a Mableton resident and director of the Cobb-Cherokee Immigrant Alliance. It was among the organizations planning to gather outside Mulligan's Bar and Grill Tuesday afternoon to protest the "racist and highly offensive" shirts.

"There's no place for these views, not in this day and age," he said.

Just down the street from Marietta's famous Big Chicken, Mulligan's has carved a provocative niche in an increasingly multicultural area, thanks to its owner's ultra-conservative political views. If you live in Marietta, it's impossible not to know what's on Norman's mind, as he posts his views on signs in front of Mulligan's.

Among his recent musings: "I wish Hillary had married OJ," "No habla espanol — and never will" and the standard "I.N.S. Agents eat free."

"I'm saying out loud what everyone in this town whispers," Norman said.

7. But comparing Bush to a chimp is A-OK, isn't it?
For instance, nobody has missed this I presume:

If you laughed at this, isn't it hypocritical to condemn the same kind of montage but with Bush's picture replaced by Obama's?

Conclusion: Either condemn the Bush/Chimp comparisons or allow Obama/Chimp comparisons as well.

What's it gonna be?

Thus justifying their enslavement and lynching on the grounds that they're not really human.

15. But Obama is half white,
and his ancestors weren't slaves either. The Africans ancestors on his father's side were of Arabic descent (thus the Hussein middle name), and were most likely slave traders themselves.

No, I tend to view the chimp comparisons as predominantly a slam on intellectual capacity. In any case, they make for poor, cheap and low-brow political discourse and should not have been used against Bush either.

18. Ack. Wow. "The African ancestors on his father's side were of Arabic descent". bzzzt.
They were not. The come from a distinct African tribal group. And it's unlikely that they were slave traders, but so the fuck what if they were? What does that have to do with anything? Furthermore, Obama, walking down any street in this country, would be seen as a black man. It's that simple. And he identifies as a black man, though he's certainly open and affirmative about his white heritage and family.

Your post is reprehensible.

23. Yes, so the fuck what if they were?
Wouldn't bother me none. Just like it doesn't bother me that most of the Founding Fathers owned slaves either.

But what you're saying is that chimp comparisons are ok for white people, but not for blacks. Isn't that kind of differentiation in itself inherently racist? You see, I'm SO not racist that I don't even make that distinction.

Reprehensible? Yeah well, tell it to someone who cares.

Yes, but not for the reason that you're implying. There is a long history in this nation of dehumanizing blacks by comparing them to apes and monkeys--and as a result, such comparisons cannot be anything but offensive today. You cannot simply insist that stereotypes be taken in a vacuum devoid of context, citing only your ignorance of that context.

I'm saying that you made up the shit about Obama's ancestry being Arabic. I'm saying there's a long and ugly history of white people comparing black people to apes, and thus not fully human as a justification to murder and enslave and oppress them. I'm saying there is NO comparable history of blacks doing the same to whites. I'm not justifying the bush=chimp comparsions though they are obviously not as offensive due to the FACTS I've brought to your attention.

And I have not even hinted that you are a racist in any way. Interesting that you want to make the claim that I have.

99. Again, from Kenneth Lamb's research:

http://kennethelamb.blogspot.com/2008/02/barak-obama-questions-about-ethnic.html

Here is the truth about Mr. Obama's name, and his father's ancestors:

True Negro tribal members of western Kenya where his father was born have Christian names, not Arabic. His father's decision to name him with an Arabic name is a matter of his father establishing his ethnic identity in Africa - it is done deliberately to separate him from the African tribes. He may live among them, but he is not one of them. His father's message is that he is Arabic, not Negro.

Many will find these truths unsettling. I'm often asked, "But I thought his father was Kenyan. How could Mr. Obama not be African-American, how could his ethnic composition be so Arabic?"

The definitive clue to that answer is to look at his name, his father's name, and the names of all his ancestors on his father's side. They are all Arabic.

Researching his roots reveal that on his father's side, he is descended from Arab slave traders. They operated under an extended grant from Queen Victoria, who gave them the right to continue the slave trade in exchange for helping the British defeat the Madhi Army in southern Sudan and the Upper Nile region.

I'm not given a whole lot to go on, and a Google search gives me nothing but links to that blog. What is the Kenyan government's classification system? How are people classified? Does it look at tribal identity, at region, at current culture, at ancestry? If you intend to go against everything that has ever been published about the Luo people, you're going to need more than one blog post making the bizarre assertion that Obama is not "legally African-American."

Frankly, I doubt that entire claim, as I can find no references to anything but that one blog post anywhere on the internet.

Also, the reactions in this thread has certainly served to drive home another point he makes:

Nobody can dare speak against Sen. Obama without generating at least a flickering flame of doubt about his or her own sanity – not to mention the knee-jerk reaction that questioning him is indicative of some deep, dark, racist agenda spurring those questions on.

97. Yawn.
I must pause very briefly to note usage of the word Negro in what follows: In all academic studies of race, the proper scientific word for the ethnic composition I discuss is Negro. For any who scream racist at its mention, I say take it up with the scientific community. It's not my word, it's theirs. I am using it in its proper scientific context.

You are free to travel to Kenya and look at those very same records.

100. "In all academic studies of race."
Edited on Tue May-13-08 02:34 PM by Occam Bandage
First, there are no academic studies of race. "Race" is an outmoded concept that has been abandoned a half-century ago. It now exists purely as a sociological construct, not as a scientific classification.

Second, the word "Negro" has not been in common use in African studies in decades. It's simply useless; there are far, far too many ethnolinguistic groups for that word to have any common meaning. He's exposing his ignorance of modern ethnology, not demonstrating his competence. (And to claim that any "science" is involved smacks of Victorian eugenics, not modern anthropology).

Not sure why you're holding him up as some sort of authority. The dude's never been published, except in a few local non-regular, non-syndicated opinion pieces, and excepting his brief stint as a one-city fundie talk-show host. He has no credentials. He is not an authority in anything. He is a pompous jackass with a blog, an ego, and a computer-repair shop.

Bush/Chimp comparisons come easily, because the man looks like a freaking chimp. His facial features, expressions, and blank stare remind us of a primate. The Curious George comparison is even more fitting, because the name directly relates, and the adjective fits like a glove.

Now, please explain to me how Barack Obama looks like a chimp...

Of course you won't. The reasons Obama "looks like a chimp" are bound to be the same reasons any person of African descent "looks like a monkey/gorilla/ape/chimp" to people meaning to dehumanize them. One can't answer that question without citing features particular to his African heritage--his skin color, his hair, his nose, his ears. One therefore can't answer the question without implying that blacks are ape-like.

45. You know what?...
I actually can't tell if you're being intentionally dim here or are actually not cognizant of long-standing, historical comparisons of African Americans to simians.

Waitaminute. With one more read, I can see where you're coming from. Exactly where.

You seem to want to throw out ALL of the known, historical, sub-human “creature from darkest Africa” stereotyping in an affort to make what appears top be a context-free point about it being okay for Obama to be mocked the same way as Bush is.

Blue-blooded , silver-spooned Mainers of practically royal lineage are not mocked as “chimps” because of their race. When ONE is, like President Bush who you are defending, it is because of his less-than-fully-evolved intelligence level. He IS IN FACT QUITE A SIMPLETON.

Comparing a random African American you know nothing of (or condoning it) save for his achievements and academic brilliance TO A MONKEY, as many racists have for as long as there has been American racism is exactly what it appears to be.

You can gussy it up in faux-egalitarian “good for the goose, good for the gander” BS, but we all see it for what it is.

You want an opportunity to get your racist little digs in without the worry of being called on it.

Well Mr. “What's the diff”, show how much the “maverick” and equal-opportunity zinger you are.

“Man up.” Run your own comparative of Obama and a monkey and defend it as “Well, Bush got it too.” on this board or any other progressive board.

Show the courage of your “I'm about fairness” convictions.

You won't. Because you know the difference between the two, and getting tombstoned from here would prevent you from continuing with your puerile, race-baiting drivel.
