There were African American slaves in Jamestown. White indentured servants were given freedom, typically after 7 years. African American slaves were enslaved for life. From the very beginning.

11. Yes, and the racist attitudes are a reminder that we have a ways to go.

My favorite is when my fellow whites say their families didn't own any slaves, or their ancestors came over after slavery, and so they aren't responsible.

Mine came over in 1910, but of course it's our shared responsibility. If you are an American, you share pride in our country's history - but that also means the baggage is yours, too. Can't have it both ways.

Second, there was that little thing called the century AFTER the Civil War, and Jim Crow. If the Civil War deaths somehow expunged slavery, we still have a hell of a lot of catching up to do to atone for that next 100 years. Clearly, the reports coming out of West Virginia - and some of the posts here - are clear indicators of that.
