Emancipation: 1870, Women's Suffrage: 1920, Jim Crow ends: 1960
These are all important milestones in the progress of our nation, but our work is definitely not done in the pursuit of equality.

As an Obama supporter, I want to acknowledge that sexism is indeed at play in some attacks on Hillary Clinton, just as racism is at play in attacks on Obama. I also want to start working on ending the divisiveness that seems to be affecting these boards.

The vast majority of us on this message board want to end sex and race discrimination in the country. I think that if we focus on that as the thing that unites us, we can move forward together towards the solution. It doesn't matter to me whether the messenger is Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I would vote for either. I know that both of them want to end this scourge in our country.

Let's try and stop turning these issues against each other like Republicans would, and unite in the common fight against sexism AND racism. BOTH are problems in our society, and BOTH will be very difficult to discuss and address openly. It will be difficult, but it's a fight that we should not back away from. Too many that have come before us have shed real blood in their struggles against these evils.

4. It might be helpful if that "vast majority" spoke out against that "vast minority"...
which is ok with the continuation of discrimination.

Ignoring is IS NOT "moving forward".

5. I completely agree.
I also know that it is a very volatile issue. Although I agree that discussions about racism should not be discouraged or ignored, I also see the point that sexism should not be completely overshadowed by the topic.

My point is that we should have an open dialogue about both and move forward together, united against the forces that propagate both of them.

10. Thanks so much for the warm welcome guys.
I know I am bringing up sensitive topics. Please believe me that it is because I believe deeply in the cause of equality for all people regardless of race, religion, sex or sexuality.

I have found that it is not easy fighting for these ideals, there is a helluva lot of resistance out there... even among some Democrats, unfortunately. I also know that the Democratic party is probably our best chance to make some real progress on these issues, which is why I am a supporter of the Democratic candidate whoever it may be.

15. Jim Crow is still very much with us, unfortunately.
Look at Florida in 2000, Ohio in 2004, and now Indiana with their new voter ID law.

16. Very good point
A lot of people are obviously attempting to bring some semblance of Jim Crow back. The recent voter ID law is a prime example of this, and just one more reason we need to get a Democrat in the white house to choose the next Supreme Court Justices.
