11. It was not a GOP stronghold

It had been a Republican seat since 1994........and all that time it had been held by the same Republican. Wicker had the seat for 13 years. Before that, it was a seat that had been held by the same Democrat for 52 years, as in, said Democrat took office during WWII.

Wicker held his seat because of incumbency and incumbency alone. Most of the Democratic leadership in the legislature is drawn from this region and I can't think of a county in it that is not controlled at the local level by a Democratic courthouse ring.

When you think of NE Mississippi, think of a place that is politically similar to North Alabama, the coal fields area of WV, KY and VA without the unionization, and SW Arkansas, N. Louisiana. Quite a few of these counties voted for Clinton in 92/96

The U.S. Senate seat will probably be picked up by Musgrove. The appointment of Wicker was an error from a geographic standpoint because it was a slap in the face to everything that is south of the meridian that forms the Arkansas/Louisiana line
