Clinton campaign was hoping that Obama ties would cause loss of Miss seat for Childers
Edited on Tue May-13-08 10:04 PM by powergirl
This article is from May 3. I find it offensive that the Clinton campaign was hoping that these southern democrats would not prevail in their campaigns. Tis is why we need to move forward with the GE - NOW!

"Sen. Barack Obama won each state’s primary earlier this year. But these days his face still appears in television ads in both states, this time from Republicans trying to turn him into a liability for Democrats in two looming special elections for long-held Republican seats.

"Democratic victories would be a serious setback for Republicans. But it also would go a long way to reassure nervous Democrats, particularly undecided superdelegates, that Obama would not present a hardship to House or Senate candidates running in tough races.

"Democratic losses would give Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton new ammunition to build her case for her presidential candidacy by questioning the sturdiness of Obama’s coattails.

“I think people want to know what chances we’re going to be having in November if Obama is the nominee,” said U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat who has endorsed Clinton.

“There are a host of judgments that superdelegates make,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who has not endorsed either presidential candidate. “Certainly a special election held close to a contested primary like this one could be very relevant.”

Obama's Coattails + Junior's Mess = "I love the smell of Republican flop sweat in the morning. Smells like victory."

Sen. Obama congratulated the Democratic Congressman who won the special election in Louisiana. Sen. Clinton never did.

17. GOP: If we don't win in MS, a lot of people will be looking for windows to jump out of
"Republicans dispatched a lineup of heavy hitters in the campaign’s final week, including a pre-election stop Monday by Vice President Dick Cheney. President Bush, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and First Lady Laura Bush recorded automated calls urging voters to support Davis.

"A GOP House leadership aide told Politico last week that “if we don’t win in Mississippi, I think you are going to see a lot of people running around here looking for windows to jump out of.”

And again, Sen. Clinton never congratulated the Democrat who won the Lousiana special election. Obama did.

22. Childers distanced himself from Obama
Watch:

And Childers is very conservative, but I suppose that can't be helped in a crimson district.

But I agree, a Democrat winning in that district is fantastic news and to a very good November for all of us.

23. How does Childers having DISTANCED HIMSELF from Obama affect this?
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/04/30/politics/horserace/entry4059136.shtml

The ad from Davis, who is battling Democrat Travis Childers in a special election in the state’s 1st Congressional district linked Childers to Obama – and Wright. “When Obama’s pastor cursed America, blaming us for 9/11, Childers said nothing," the ad claimed. "When Obama ridiculed rural folks for clinging to guns and religion, Childers said nothing. Travis Childers – he took Obama’s endorsement over our conservative values. Conservatives just can’t trust Travis Childers.”

Childers attacked the ad and today began running one of his own. “This campaign has been one for the books,” Childers says in the ad. “My family has heard the lies and attacks linking me to politicians I don’t know and have never met. But keep this in mind: I’ve never raised taxes, Greg Davis has. I don’t have a taxpayer-funded car, Greg Davis does. I’m pro-life and pro-gun. I’m Travis Childers and I approve this message because I’ll do on Congress what I’ve done in Mississippi – work with both parties, balance budgets and create jobs.”

Politicians I don't know and have never met...

Now, as for the Clinton campaign allegedly having hoped Childers would lose -- the article didn't say it was the Clinton campaign. You're stretching comments by one or two Democratic politicians, only one of whom has endorsed Clinton, and pretending they represent the Clinton campaign.

Some Obama supporters here tried something similar with Cazayoux's victory last week, mentioning only that the GOP had linked Cazayoux to Obama, and completely leaving out the very salient fact that they linked Cazayoux to Clinton as well.

Very misleading.

31. Yes, don't get why Obama fans think these races reflect well on Obama.
This shows the stupidity and despair of congressional Repuke strategists more than anything else.
These candidates that have been winning these local races have nothing to do with Obama, and indeed, these candidates rarely even bring up Obama, unless they're distancing themselves from a liberal candidate in order to win their races in these kinds of districts.

The other side is running some awful campaigns and we've got the better candidates.

24. Clintons have undermined and sabotaged any Dem who came forward to lead - Gore
Kerry and Dean at the DNC.

Obama will get through their constant undermining because it is being done more openly and the many good Dems Clintons have worked against for years are helping Obama.

27. Nonsense. Obama has nothing to do with these congressional elections.
Indeed, the candidates are not linking themselves in any way to Obama, because they are not liberal candidates. Indeed, on numerous issues Childers is closer to McCain than he is to Obama.

The voters in these races understand these are local races and the local Dems get candidates who fit the districts and can win.
