Speaking just now in Montana, Bill said the only reason wind power wasn't being harnessed where the wind blows (i.e. Montana) was because there was no way to get the electricity onto the grid. So not only will the "Big Sky" state get the huge pinwheels, they'll get those lovely towers and cables strung border-to-border. Not sure that will play any better in Montana than pledging to put oil rigs off South Beach Miami.
3. There are losses, but the long distance lines have the voltage cranked up
That's why they string them so high, the magnetic fields generated can have some pretty serious effects and you really don't want them hitting anything that's could ground it.
