my Mom should vote Democratic. she fits the demo and is voting against her own economic best interests generally...in fact, she'd be Hillary's IDEAL demographic (older white female, non-college educated, <$50,000) if she, like, didn't have some kind of visceral reaction to her, LOL. but she works in Houston in and among VERY high-dollar, hardcore Republicans, and i think it just rubs off. makes her feel like she can 'hang', if that makes sense  it's a class thing. last Dem she voted for was Kennedy.
we visited for Mother's Day. over the course of the weekend, we talked about the presidential race a lot...
i told her how even though i voted for Perot twice and Badnarik (and Kinky Friedman for governor! heh), i was for the first time voting major party because i BELIEVED in the candidate.
i told her how important it was for me that Obama DIDN'T denounce Wright initially, because i knew how important that relationship was with someone that brought you to Christ...and yet that he had the courage to do so when he did. she agreed with that. (i know lots of people belittle that distinction, but it was very clear and very important to me.)
we talked about the "gas tax holiday"...and she works in an industry where she sees the profit margins of oil companies, and she knows what they would do...and i told her how yes, Obama had voted for a similar measure in Illinois, and when it didn't work, he LEARNED from that mistake, my oh myyy!
we talked about Obama's intellect, and how, why, yes indeed, he IS a high-falootin fancy-talkin' smarty-smartpants, and gee, what a concept, THAT'S WHAT THE PRESIDENT SHOULD BE, DAMMIT! :eyes:
we talked about how a lot of people jumped on Wright and flag pins and 'what his wife says' and whatever other BS because though they won't admit it even to themselves, a lot of people are LOOKING for an excuse to make them feel okay about not voting for him...and she admitted that was her. she WANTS to want to vote for him, she "just..."
we talked about the war, and about how McCain really seems to be vetting his demons from Vietnam in his position, that he will refuse to accept anything other than some sort of unachievable idealistic victory, and thus we will be there for a very, very long time. and i contrasted that w/ Obama's questioning of Petraeus last month, and how he really seemed to be focusing in on a REASONABLE measure of 'victory'.
we talked about my marriage...to a man my entire family had issues with because of his race, but who over the course of time they came to not only accept but to ADORE. they came to see what i saw - what an exceptional man he is and how wonderful we've made our life together. and what an impact he has had on the way she looks at 'the world', and the people in it.
my mom listened to me. i'm not some starry-eyed idealistic college student...i'm almost 40 years old and i'm a political cynic and my parents worked hard so that i could get a world-class education and live well and make them proud. which i have done.
my mom listened to me.
and she's voting Obama in November. :)
(Dad lives in rural east Texas, surrounded by what i'm pretty sure are the exact demographics that voted so overwhelmingly tonight...i'm not even sure he's registered to vote since like Nixon or something, LOL...i'll have to see what i can do for him :) )
