Bend soldier remembered as someone ‘you couldn’t help but love’

According to a friend, Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis “loved what she was doing” in Iraq, where she worked as a medic.

The Central Oregonian killed Sunday in Iraq was described by those who knew her as a friendly young woman who worked hard and always had a smile on her face.

Cpl. Jessica A. Ellis, 24, was killed Sunday when a vehicle she was riding in was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad. She was an Army health care specialist serving her second deployment in Iraq, assigned to the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). She is the second female Oregonian and fifth Central Oregonian killed since the war started in 2003.

...

A health care specialist, Ellis was first deployed to Iraq in October 2005. She returned in September 2006 but was sent back to the region a year later, in October 2007. Ellis was in the midst of a 15-month deployment.

Army health care specialists provide basic and emergency medical treatment when an Army physician isn’t available.

Among their main duties is providing emergency medical treatment to casualties on the battlefield, although they also provide basic care by interviewing patients, taking their temperatures and preparing blood samples for the laboratory.

stop blabbing about the economy; stop blabbing about oil prices and tax holidays; stop blabbing about bowling and pool and snipers

just admit that our country is committing an obscenity 24x7 and that it must be stopped.

This 24-year old kid is over there to pick up the pieces when other kids get blown to bits for driving around in an illegally occupied country, engaging in combat that periodically kills and maims civilians. So she gets blown to bits.

This situation is an obscenity beyond comprehension. THERE IS NO OTHER VALID ISSUE IN THIS FUCKING ELECTION! This situation, bad as it is, is representative of an even worse situation: IT IS BEING TOLERATED! It is being rationalized. It is actually welcomed by the cabal that has taken control of our country.

Stop this shit, restore the Constitution, and try to atone as a nation for war crimes beyond anything any patriotic American could ever imagine being committed by our once-respectable country.

I want to be once again proud of my country.

4. I agree and disagree all at the same time
It's not MY issue. I voted. I protested. I gave money to fight it happening. I blogged. I fought to the figurative death against it since long before we invaded. I have done what I can with greatest passion and in greatest conscience and now I give up.

There ARE other battles. I'm sorry she died, sick in fact that another child is dead for this monstrous war, even sicker at yet another seed hatred and despair that now exists and will grow both here and in Iraq, nurtured by her blood.

But it is time for more people and other people to step up and get excited and pissed off about it now, to do something about it.

The party I faithfully supported all these years is just as guilty of wringing their hands about the evil omnipresent terrists and stupidly participating in this war as the other guys, so if it's the only issue, then I am now apolitical.

I despise everyone equally.

Leadership in politics is not about reacting to pressure from warmongering or peacemongering activists. It's not about being a scorekeeper about how "it's worth it" or it's not worth it. It's about being a quarterback, about doing something meaningful and memorable to make it end.

I just don't see any quarterbacks on either team at the moment, and our very own party leadership told us a long time ago who they weren't going to support, so this is what's left.

My vote has to be earned, not coerced, and certainly not given out of some misplaced sense of loyalty to a new version of the old status quo.

5. thanks
i think we agree more than disagree

Yes, it is time for someone to step up and declare an emergency. We have some 140,000 people over there driving around waiting to get blown to bits, to no good purpose.

I didn't really make a lucid point; I was just venting. It is so frustrating to keep adding these kids to Zeitlangers with no end in sight, and those vying to lead the country generally calculating whether the polls say they should act like they care today.
