"HOLD ON SWEETIE WE'LL DO A PRESS AVAIL"
That is the answer Obama gave when asked, "Senator how are you going to help the American auto worker" when he was touring a Chrysler Plant in MI today. The press avail, never occurred. But that isn't really suprising. I wonder if he will get a clue.

It is actually more like Clinton's "whites" quote than like the iran quote.

He said it, so it's not distorted.

It's not the thing you want to be calling women in the workplace. And if you think it's an appropriate thing to say, then you are one of those who thinks the man deserves NO scrutiny.

35. John Edwards endorses - to appear w/ Obama tonight in Grand Rapids
So Wed. afternoon Obama tells local TV news "reporter" her question will be addressed. And sounds like tonight he will damn well adress it! HA HA HA Mass Dem!

Former Sen. John Edwards is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama's presidential candidate Wednesday evening, in a dramatic attempt by the Obama campaign to answer concerns regarding Obama's appeal to working-class voters, several senior Democratic sources tell ABC News.

Edwards, who ran for president on a platform of eradicating poverty, plans to appear alongside Obama in Grand Rapids, Mich., Wednesday evening. The event comes one day after Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton defeated Obama by 41 points in the West Virginia primary, and Edwards' endorsement will give Obama a key establishment stamp of approval as he attempts to close out the nominating process. ...

A source close to the Clinton campaign said the Edwards camp gave the Clinton folks a head's up.

"Clearly it's upsetting" the source tells ABC. "He brings the workers" to Obama.

28. He spent an hour on the assembly floor with the workers & met w/ Chrysler pres. re environmental
aspects of auto design, and looked at their hybrid models. Some local female TV "reporter" calls out to him a broad question as he's walking along greeting workers. That is NOT the kind of question which could be or should be answered with some glib 10 second sound bite for her convenience. Instead of smiling and saying nothing in response - as most politicians would do - he told her it would be addressed later. And I am sure it will be - Barack Obama is calm, cool and collected and campaigns on HIS schedule. He gave her the courtesy of a reply - but it wasn't the reply she wanted.

Presidential candidates have very tight schedules. They make carefully researched and prepared policy SPEECHES on major topics, on things like the future of the auto industry and auto workers. He's not about to stop and give an off the cuff major policy statement in that setting. She was trying to get a freebie press conference question, in a non-press conference setting. I know TV talking heads are picked for their looks, not their brains, but cripes - did she really think he was going to giver her a scoop or something?

Yes, he addressed her familiarly, - and I guess that pissed her off, because she said on air, in a very sarcastic tone, he never answered "this sweetie", referring to herself. That was unprofessional on her part, because the reporter is NOT supposed to be part of the story.

I agree he should drop "sweetie" from his vocabulary, except when talking to his wife and daughters. However, it is a term that I use with family, friends and some colleagues - I find it inappropriate, but not offensive.

36. if his referring
to a news person who is trying to get some attention as "sweetie" is among the things which "give you pause", I have to be honest and say that I think you might be looking for something that simply doesn't exist- That being the "perfect" candidate.
I find the outrage over the "sweetie" comment really telling. It's kind of shallow. In the course of working with children, I've come to use gentle terms of endearment such as "sweetie", "hon" pretty often. It is similar to the way some people use the terms "Sir", "Mam", "Gentlemen", "Miss", "Young Lady", "Young Man" etc.
People can and do take offense at things which are not intended as offensive- things which the general public does not find offensive. I'm not saying the reporter is "wrong" to feel whatever she might feel, but I'm not going to condemn Obama for the use of this pronoun- The reporter didn't ask the question in the most polite and friendly manner- Obama's response was not unreasonable or offensive. (IMO).

I'm sorry that you find Obama a difficult person for you to feel 'glad' about. Honestly.
I'm personally glad he is running, and look forward to his leadership as president. He is NOT 'perfect'- but I believe he is the best person for the job. By far.

peace~

44. For what it's worth to you, Obama has apologized...
Obama apologizes: 'Sweetie' a 'bad habit'

Obama leaves a voicemail for a Detroit TV reporter he called "sweetie":

Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I'm calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn't get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren't the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.

Second apology is for using the word 'sweetie.' That's a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next.

71. I'm sure we all have more important things to obsess over than an innocuous familiarity.
Bad economy.
Housing meltdown.
War on two fronts.
Saber rattling with Iran.
Earthquake in China.
Tens of thousands dead and dying in Myanmar.
Gitmo.
Darfur.
AIDS.
Health care costs.

A sense of proportion will go a long way to ending this kind of silliness over what is, in reality, not much ado about anything remotely important.
