It does not quote John Edwards actually saying he will not endorse the Democratic nominee. It is only the author paraphrasing John Edwards. So we don't know what he actually said.

Anytime I sit with a bunch of people watching a televised interview, we inevitably end up hooting and jeering the interviewers for their inability to understand the interviewee. I'm not fond of the idea of a partisan contender as Attorney General. I strongly prefer an AG with a top-notch reputation for integrity, fairness, and diligence. Fitzgerald has that kind of reputation - and it's what I admire. Ashcroft and Gonzales have been catastrophic. RFK (whom I admired) inspired the "no relatives" prohibition on cabinet appointments.

That doesn't mean I'd object to an eventual appointment of Edwards to SCOTUS. I'd support that.
