WV Woman Gets "Poor" Call From Hillary Campaign
The Hillary Clinton campaign is apologizing to a Shepherdstown woman after a campaign volunteer was captured on tape saying "West Virginians are poor."

Julie Corvo says the volunteer accidentally left the message on her answering machine after playing a taped message from Sen. Clinton.

"Hi. Hello? This is crazy," the volunteer said. "This person hung up. Maybe they think it's a bill collector. I bet it is. West Virginians are poor."

Corvo, a teacher in Harpers Ferry, says she was tired of getting so many campaign calls, but she couldn't believe her ears when she heard the latest one. She says she is a "fifth generation" West Virginian who is not poor.

"I don't have bill collectors calling me. I resent the stereotype. I'm very tired of it," Corvo said.

She phoned the Hillary Clinton campaign in West Virginia, who had someone call her from the campaign's national office. They apologized for the message.

17. The problem
The problem is that there has been so many incidents like this and they are not getting put on TV. This is a great commercial and it's not made up. Stuff like this will make a lot of inroads in Kentucky. I hope Obama does not write off Kentucky like he did in WV. Perception is everything and leaving WV go looks bad no matter how you spin the numbers.

3. Imagine if she could hear what Bill & Hill say in private about poor southern whites.
At that Camp David gathering, after the mid-term disaster/election during Bill's first term, didn't HRC say, re poor southern white voters, "The hell with them, Bill. You don't owe them anything!"

Since the Eastern Panhandle, as a bedroom community for Washington, is probably in the best economic shape in the state.

Do they still have party lines there
can you imagine the strings on that? Maybe they called the wrong extension...giving Hillary volunteers the benefit of the doubt, they accidently picked up the wrong tin can.

20. I really don't see how this is much of an insult, being poor for some is a fact of life, the insult
to me is the fact that she thought it was an insult to be called poor!

21. WHAT? He assumed because she was in WV that she was
hanging up because she thought a BILL COLLECTOR was calling.

Would he have said that if he were calling someone in Beverly Hills? NO.

So how is it NOT an insult? If someone assumed you were poor and hanging up on bill collectors just because of the state you lived in, you bet your ass you would consider that insulting. I can't believe you are trying to justify this very obvious insult. The woman is a Hillary supporter and even she thought it was insulting.

to-do over nothing. How do you know it was said "because she lives in West Virginia" I didn't see that in the comment, maybe she did say it about others who knows.Oh and before we go there I was raised in Maryland about 25 feet from the West Virginia state line.

Edited to say: I reread the original post and did see where she said "West Virginians are poor" put I still don't think called poor is an insult.

24. Put the two sentences together.
She was probably afraid it was a bill collector. West Virginians are poor. Only by taking those two statements APART can you justify them.

But together?

Yeah, sorry, it's an insult.

(Can't believe I even have to explain that.)

don't think there is that much to it.I've heard a lot worse about other states and the people who live there, but like I said it's all much ado about nothing! IMO

26. Well, I've been poor, owned guns and used to go to church, so I guess I should really be offended
by everything and everybody! But I'm not, I hope that makes me a better person for it but one can only hope.

And I havent viewed any of the "insults" on the campaign trail as such. I also tend to not easily be offended but I guess thats just my demeanor.

38. It reflects on the hypocrisy of the Clinton campaign
Edited on Thu May-15-08 05:42 AM by CakeGrrl
The ironies are rich with them.

The woman who takes in $109MM over 7 years with her husband is painting her opponent, who filed - what, $1MM last year (or less; I could be thinking of his net worth)? - as "elitist".

Then one of her staffers makes a throwaway assumption that the person on the other end of that call wasn't just poor, but also that that was characterstic of Clinton's West Virginian demographic and that the caller was a deadbeat for avoiding a bill collector.

This WOULD have been all over the news in a hot second if an Obama staffer had been caught saying it.

40. You make a lot of assumptions there, I've avoided bill collectors calls and I most certainly don't
think of myself as a deadbeat or anything close, everyone (well most everyone) is having hard times right now maybe it might have something to do with that, maybe not, but don't assume anything because you know what they say about that....
