The Obama supporters who blasted Edwards for waiting too long to endorse Obama...
Edited on Wed May-14-08 04:54 PM by brentspeak
...have very little political sense, because if ever Obama needed something right now, at this stage in the nomination race, to help boost his support among white, working-class voters, it's an Edwards endorsement. Hillary Clinton would, in all likelihood, still lose the nomination even without Edwards endorsing Obama; but she could still inflict political damage against Obama in the upcoming primaries -- political damage that would affect Obama in the GE against McCain. An Edwards endorsement helps to stymie the currently-growing sentiment that Obama will have trouble attracting the white, working class vote.

5. If you've been following the political analysis in the past week,
Edited on Wed May-14-08 04:59 PM by brentspeak
you would find that almost every analyst is now saying the same thing: Obama, from this point on, will be encountering increasing resistance from white, working-class voters. Even Obama recognizes that - article headline from the NYTimes: "News Analysis After Big Loss, Obama Woos Blue-Collar Voters (in Michigan)". http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/13/us/politics/14cnd-campaign.html Again, the issue isn't necessarily Obama vs. Hillary, as it is Obama vs. McCain.

So, exactly why are you laughing?

4. It's a great media play
But politically it doesn't seem to have much of a meaning since Obama is already virtually certain to be the nominee by the honest metric (i.e. delegate count.) It is a nice middle finger to Clinton which works for me. I don't think it immediately increases Obama's "white working class vote" by any means.

16. Probably not, but he does have 19 pledged delegates. My bet
is the majority go with Obama. It also neatly takes care of obliterating hilly's big win, and dominates a couple of news cycles. It was already over for Hill anyway.

13. I figured he would wait until the end
Gives his endorsement a bit more weight.

Next, I think it will be either Gore or Carter, if they just want to end this thing. Or Pelosi or Reid.

15. I don't think I'd want to have a beer with Obama...
...would certainly love to chat policy, especially tech policy. But hell, I wouldn't want to play the man in poker...

I spoke no ill of Edwards. It's long been apparent that, well, Obama has game.
