9. I think the issue was that this woman was at work
She was doing her job, beside her male counterparts. In that situation it is never okay unless you know the woman really well. Obama did the right thing and apologized. I think it was just a simple faux pas.

10. Not all women are Obama supporters from DU
Edited on Wed May-14-08 10:11 PM by peterbluepedro
DU is not representative of American women. Women here are an anomaly in that respect.

24. It's not hard to figure out that not every woman is an Obama supporter on DU.......
Edited on Wed May-14-08 10:57 PM by Marrah_G
If you registered an hour ago or 5 years ago, that's a pretty basic truth.

DU has never been representative of the general population.

Your post is puzzling.

13. And I'd call him that right back...
I'm a Southerner by upbringing, I can make it sound right. (We call everyone "sweetie" so we don't have to remember all those names.)

Until January, and then it'll be "President Sweetie."

17. He can call me anything just so he calls me
 ~ Sorry Michelle

Ms. goclark

Seriously, in our AA culture, calling someone Sweetie,in a friendly setting, is our nice way of saying "Hey You" or " I will now call on the Young lady in the Blue Dress."

It is not meant as a come on.

He is from Urban Chicago and his ear is trained to speak Ebonics/Black English as well as Harvard English.

No matter how many degrees we have, we speak two languages.

My 90 yr. old mother would totally understand these expressions, so would I and so would my 16 yr. old cousin......

Hey Pretty Mama!

Hey Sweet Thing

Hey Doll Baby

Hey Ms. Beyonce, you look mighty pretty today.

Young Lady, you are lookin' mighty fine this afternoon! You could be a peach on a vine!

In our culture we enjoy playing around with words/ greetings... I'll try to contact the campaign and tell them to let him know that some people are offended by "Sweetie." I can understand that there is a cultural difference.
