34. Welcome to DU
I know the Burke-Gilman is a great trail for that $4000 aluminum-frame Motobécane. Careful you don't scratch the paint on your outback as load the bike on the rack.

The key is to not look like you're sneering at the driver of that plumbing van parked in front of your condo.

44. I AM "lower working class white"....I thought it was funnier than hell
My grandparents moved out here from West Virginia so my grandfather could work in the local pulp mill. He'd been a coal miner.

Used to make his own booze right here in Port Townsend.

Those films Stewart showed?? That could be my family. Aunts and uncles.

My grandmother on the other side was a skid row drunk. She had worked as a cook on cattle drives from the time she was 10 years old until the early 40's. My grandfather died on skid row in Bellingham.

If it wasn't for my Vietnam service I would NOT have been able to go to college.

Don't you DARE try and lecture me on the salt of the earth, white trash or working class people.

That's exactly who I am, and I have no illusions about them.

101. As some smart person
pointed out on here recently, there is a difference between involuntary ignorance, and willful ignorance. In this day and age, with all the information that anyone can get access to with the slightest effort, there is no excuse for the kind of ignorant horseshit those people were spouting in those clips. They deserve mockery. Maybe that will make them ashamed enough to make some effort to learn the truth before they speak. But I doubt it.

Like the guy from Port Townsend, I know that mentality all too well. People like that love wallowing in their bigotry and stupidity. And it has NOTHING to do with being "working class." My whole family was and is working class, and the majority of us never felt the desire to be backward buffoons. But some did, and they chose to stay isolated in the sticks, associating with others like themselves. They lived short, sad, stunted lives, entirely of their own choosing, and my sympathy for them and all others like them is nil.

That isn't bigotry; it is valuing education, growth and compassion, and rejecting ignorance, entropy and hate. Just because we Democrats have a "big tent," that doesn't mean we have to celebrate everyone who votes for one of us, no matter how repulsive their motives might be.

118. Because you "pulled yourself by your bootstraps" out of the working class
That we traditionally... hell... for whom it is our entire purpose to promote.

I don't give a flying fuck if they're as stupid as hell. They are still democrats, I will vigorously pursue their wellbeing, I want their votes and I'm not going to join the gang tackle by the cool kids.

Why am I ambivalent about Edwards' endorsement of Obama? I'm hoping that he'll help put an end to this shit, something Obama and his more urbane supporters are quite happy to let continue.

As a youth, before hitchiking to California, dad was a coal miner. His dad was a coal miner. Back in the day, every mine had a table that they'd use to clean up their dead before handing them over to the undertaker. My grandfather woke up on that table twice. Why did he keep going back? So that my dad wouldn't starve. There's a very thin veneer that now covers that survival reality in most rural areas.

When I see anyone make fun of "toothless West Virginians", or laugh at an ignorant statement or a misspelling, I remember that those people don't put an emphasis on education or dentistry for the same reason - they are in a survival mode that those of us who have the luxury of self-identifying based on our leisure pursuits can't understand.

Jeff wrote:

I answer:

I see nothing in what Obama has said that would qualify your opinion on this. How do you KNOW Obama is happy to let this continue??

If you want to really talk life experience, Obama is closer to the kinds of working class in W. Va than Hillary ever was.....in spite of her portable accent, the faked up whiskey drinking episodes and the lies about her voting on gun rights.

I know he seems rich and distant - maybe a little too Ivy League - in speech and the way he dresses - and perhaps a little too formal - I don't think he is the elitist the press or the Clintons would make him out to be. No one coming from the kind of background HE did could be, really.

Ending the status quo - the two (or three) societies we have in this country is EXACTLY why I want him in office.

Without him being the center of attention, would you and I even be having this conversation???

When was the last time you expressed what you know about W. Va, and all that poverty in public?

When was the last time race, religion, gender and politics were all discussed out in the open like this?? Even in the MSM?? I know there's a lot of horseshit being tossed about as wisdom, but that's just because folks get scared to be outside their comfort zones and hate having their pre -judged ideas challenged. This whole process is even flushing the racists like Buchanan out in the open so they can be dealt with.....

132. I've never been to Arkansas (where my family is from) nor W. Va.
But I have lived all my life in an area that has been disparagingly called "appalachia of the west". People from the I-5 corridor know it as "that run-down logging town on the way to the beach". Every day, I try to improve the conditions of the rural poor. That's why I get pissed off when hip websites like Radar and Fark call Edwards "the angry bum candidate".

We're having this conversation because, like Josyln Carter said of Reagan, "he makes us comfortable with our predjudices", Obama is making his more urbane supporters comfortable with theirs.

in the generation before me.....but the extremes were there - the last 25 years has seen a gentrification of this whole area - Irondale and some smaller towns are still pretty fucked up -

I saw a bumper sticker in the back window of a truck a couple weeks ago that said "a vote for a democrat is a vote for socialism"

Although the education has been better out here and the influx of transplants from California and back east has diluted the hatred, it is still here, under the surface....

Try Yakima......

Pretty close to Irondale, but on the other side of the highway. It's a very interesting mix of economic levels in the PT/Chimicum area. Lots of money in PT proper, and Port Ludlow... but the old logging areas are still pretty depressed, and as a young guy without any special skills or degree, there wasn't a lot of jobs outside the tourism ones (didn't want to work the mill).

Lovely area, though. I still visit on a regular basis from Seattle. It's nice to see someone else from the area.

2. This kind of stuff from Stewart hurts Obama in the general election far more...
than Hillary and us die-hard Hillarites continuing to fight. I remember back to Obama's Iowa acceptance speech, which at the time struck me in three ways. 1)Wow, this guy can speak! 2)Wow, this guy loves his vague, glittering generalities. And, from the zealous over-reaction from his crowd, 3) -- if he falls someday, it won't be because Obama will Deanscream, it will be because his Obama Army will Deanscream for him.

Sounds like Stewart is coming from the same place as many Obama DUers are recently -- they are not pretty in victory. Obama may not be an arrogant snob, but an awful lot of his supporters are!

92. Have you seen the segment?
Three women. One so ill-informed she thought Obama was muslim. A second tried to conflate Obama's middle name with the dictator of Iraq. This woman, of course, would not make the same identification between John McCain and John Kerry. Because Obama has a name that doesn't sound white, one woman would not consider voting for him. The third woman noted that she wasn't voting for him because there's trouble between (her framing) us and them. The boy who donated his bike had the last name of Hatfield, fwiw.

If Louis Farrakan said he supported Obama and then made a stupid racist remark, I would not embrace him. I may not be able to keep him from speaking out, but he doesn't speak for me.

Why do you defend any Hillary supporter who says obviously racist and stupid remarks?

3. It was brutal.
The quotes were downright shocking, but I don't think those ignoramuses represent the general population of the state. To present them without countering with some sensible folks was really an insult to the state. If I were in WV, I'd feel both insulted by Stewart and ashamed of my fellow citizens. That being said... being in Texas, I could easily direct you toward bigots for some primo quotes.

142. But that is what Jon Stewart does and has always done.
He goes after the extreme, the ridiculous. He knows he could have found a thinking W. Virginian - I know he could have found a thinking W. Viginian - but he was making a point. "fair and balanced" is not his schtick.

13. To be fair....
the voters profiled in that segment were ignorant racists. The problem is that since the segment did not present average, decent people, it made it appear that those despicable people are representative of WV.

Also, keep in mind that Stewart is a comedian doing his own thing, and not a part of the Obama campaign. Don't paint us with the same brush you use on him, when we can't control what he says any more than you could.

115. Optimism?
I just don't think those idiots could possibly be the average citizen there. Now, I wouldn't doubt that the proportion of racists could be higher there than some other places, demographics vary from state to state and region to region, but I seriously doubt the whole state is like that.

My point was, for people who are linking that show to the Obama campaign, that Stewart did it, not Obama, not Plouffe, etc. This was one comedian's show, but some folks here are trying to twist it into an Obama or Obama supporters thing. If they didn't like the segment, blame it on Stewart, not on the rest of us.

First off, they gave away more than 10% to charity, so there is 11 million gone, already.

Then, they paid about 34 million in Federal income taxes. So subtract that...

141. Watch the clip. Stewart's point was that the campaign took the kid's money.
And when you think about it, a candidate with a personal fortune of millions of dollars, accepts a contribution from a kid who's sold his bicycle and games to make the contribution... doesn't sound good. Nothing wrong with the kid's commitment and dedication -- but I like to think that if I were running for office, I would have quietly gotten the kid another bike.

109. It's the Daily Show.
Jon Stewart isn't in business to help the Democratic Party. But if he finds clips like this you're crazy if you think he's not going to use them.

I think the ignorant fools that Stewart showed clips of are a hell of a lot more hurtful to Democrats than a comedy show is.

125. Y'all are fools cuz Stewart rules!
The Hillary camp is starting to have the same "talent deficit" as the republicans. Bright, creative, people just don't dig her.

138. Here you go:
Top of the page: http://www.comedycentral.com/ "Indecision 2008 - West Virginia"

That page doesn't seem to be loading very well - here is a truly terrible YouTube link, but you can at least see what folks are talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt6x0oOLs-E
