Feminists for Obama
The right-wing blogs have been busy today. They'd like to convince voters that all feminists are angry at Barack Obama. Nonsense.

I'm a white woman. I'm also gay. I support Obama. Why? Because he's obviously got the nomination sewn up, and I certainly don't want McCain or another Republican to win the White House. Millions of other white women feel the same way.

Is Obama a saint? No, and I've never said so. Neither is a devil. Hillary Clinton is neither a saint nor a devil. They're politicians. In fact, they're both center-moderate Democratic politicians. Neither of them is as progressive as me on most issues. Does that mean that I'm planning to vote for Ralph Nader or encourage people not to vote Democratic or - most bizarrely of all - vote for a Republican out of spite? No. And neither are millions of other Americans.

Don't believe the spin.

9. A really, really, old feminist checking in for Obama.
I still have vivid memories of FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt and how they inspired our Nation and peoples during dark and difficult days in our Nations history. Obama stirs the hearts and minds of "We the People," that we are all in this together much like the Roosevelt's did. Much as I admire Hillary Clinton and understand her own admiration for Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary is no Eleanor Roosevelt.

6. I'm here ... and Fired UP!
I served in the US Army and was within one of the first groups of women officers integrated from the Womens Army Corps (WACs) to the Regular Army. As such, to say that I experienced SEXISM is a massive understatement. :wow:

However, I've learned through my years of active duty, government and civilian service, that people should be judged as *individuals.*

I've had the pleasure of serving under many effective and talented bosses (and leaders) of both genders and a myriad of ethnicities.

Yes, I'm proud to support Barack Obama because, IMO, he's "The Genuine Article."

10. Can't figure out why real feminists would support the candidate of status quo
Edited on Fri May-16-08 09:44 AM by havocmom
Just because Hillary is a she is not a reason for feminists to support her. SHE is too much invested in maintaining the status quo and the status quo is NOT good for women.

Put me in the Obama column: White female without a college degree living in a state often derided here for being 'red' despite our DEM Gov, Senators, and much progressive policy. Oh, and I am old too.

So much for the demographic theory. :D

::sigh::

I will work for the nominee. Been doing that since it was obvious (to rational, intellectually honest people) who that is.

Obama does inspire and get more people involved and that makes him worthy of support. The status quo HAS to change. He can get people moving to do that and I am all for that!

47. Many men are feminists. It means supporting equal rights for women.
Feminism does not mean promoting the rights of one group over another. To me, feminism means supporting equal rights for all people, regardless of their sex or gender identity.

Nothing prevents men from being feminists. In fact, I believe that all enlightened men are feminists.

44. To me, feminism means fully supporting equal rights for women.
Feminism means recognizing that women are as deserving as men in all respects. It means that women should not be discriminated against in any way as a group. To me, feminism is a corollary to full support for human rights. People should not be discriminated against on the basis of their sex or gender identity, period. That goes for transgendered people as well.

Just as I support full and equal rights for all people regardless of their ethnicity, culture, religion, country of origin, state of origin, affectional and sexual orientation, and gender identity, I support full and equal rights for women throughout the world.

Is that clear?

53. Yes, but it'll be an uphill battle
Too many people belong to organized religions which go counter to gender equality. The Bible for example is chock full of these kinds of examples. One reason why I stopped going to church after I left my parents home. Religion seems to always be a refuge for people to rationalize why their subjugation of other types of people is the right thing to do.

Can feminists be full Christians also?

57. Of course it's an uphill battle! We wouldn't have to be talking about it for thousands of years
if it was easy!

Yes, many feminists are "full Christians." When I read Jesus's words in the New Testament, I see strongly feminist and humanist values being promoted. I'm not distracted by the corruption that has been added by powerful people with personally selfish agendas over the years.

71. I sat on the board of NYC NOW in the 80's and I'm for Obama!
I'm woman who's been a longtime feminist. Back in the eighties and nineties I was heavily involved in the fight for woman's reproductive rights. I helped organize NY's participation in the huge March on Wash in '89, worked to stop Operation Rescue, protested Bork, and was involved in a number of other actions. Yes, I would love to see a woman president someday. But wanting integrity in a candidate for President, and wanting the Democrats to come together and win in November comes first in my book.

We have a wonderful candidate in Barack, and I personally feel it's reverse sexism not to support him because of his gender, and that reverse sexism is the other side of the sexism coin. I proudly support Barack Obama. Hillary's lists of angry, pissed off female supporters do not speak for me.

I don't have a problem with it, btw. Practical politics is really all there is. But don't use a plural, general ideological label for a thread about your own practical thinking.
