Ask Hillary: Women of 'steel' don’t just give up

When you're 10 years old, cutting class is hardly ever a good idea.

Still, this was the day before the North Carolina primary, the sun was out and Hillary Clinton was making a noon stop at High Point's train depot.

It was among the last whistle stops in a hard-fought campaign that she and Barack Obama waged with genuine shoe leather, an odd throwback to the retail politics of handshakes and barbecues, a retro era before flyovers and remote control TV ads defined North Carolina campaigns.

Suzzy, missing lunch and fourth-grade recess for this, climbed up on a park bench, looked over the heads of the crowd and got a bird's eye view of the first woman in history with a shot at being leader of the free world.

In the center of the platform, a gray-haired governor and his dark-haired son introduced Clinton, who launched into a well-oiled stump speech that seemed to hit fourth gear in North Carolina — a little too late.

It was a speech that mostly sailed over a grade-schooler's head, about the gas tax and the trade deficit, the uninsured and troop withdrawals.

Yet Suzzy bounced on her tiptoes as if it were a Miley Cyrus concert and bought a button for a souvenir . . .

4. This deeply touches me....
It is so profound and real. I know my emotions are easily stirred as we come to an end of this primary, but I find myself weeping. Go figure.

Thanks for posting.

5. I was all wrapped up in a few typical articles when I came upon this one. It hit me the same

I wish more folks would recognize that we aren't just some campaign out here. So many emotions are wrapped up in this historic primary. And if you've followed one of these candidates closely, you've been privy to some very special moments of humanism and camaraderie that will remain in our memories forever.

The affinities toward these candidates based on their race or gender have been dismissed as shallow or misguided, but when you speak of the children's reactions to these candidates you realize the enormous leap forward either of these candidates' advancement represents for their future. It is enough to make anyone weep.

7. Yes, the historic significance has been missed by many...
It is indeed enough to make those of us who care deeply about the future weep.

9. You mean woman of "steal", don't you?
If she can't win the nomination under the rules she agreed to, she'll try to change the rules and steal it.
