What a difference a day makes!
Yesterday, my daughter was diagnosed with Chronic Daily Headaches, and told to learn to deal with the pain. She has back pain from the spinal tap now, too. Daughter, mom and entire family were slightly depressed over this news. We came home from the hospital sad and frustrated.

Today, we sat on the couch snuggling, and watch Obama slap George and Johnny around a little bit. We really enjoyed that.

We watched the coverage of said remarks and felt really happy.

We got a call back from a good chiropractor who really believes he can help her. She's going in to see him next Monday. Also got a call from a great headache clinic that uses everything from botox to acupuncture to herbs, we got in in early August instead of October!

We signed up to attend a return watching party at a local restaurant - because Obama's going over the top and we want to celebrate!

We got our tickets to see Obama in Tampa the very next day!

What a difference a day makes!

1. Dehydration
is the most common cause of chronic headaches. Does your daughter drink enough water? This is overlooked more often than not.

3. we work on that - she was also on IV fluids for 4 days in the hospital
and they didn't let up at all. They just ebb and flow, never really going away. But thanks for the advice.

4. It took my son six months of constant hydration
Before the headaches diminished. There was no other change in the course of treatment; we'd tried about everything we could for a 8-year-old.

Good luck. It is so very hard to see your child in pain.

At least you have some good things to look forward to! I expect a lot of fireworks between Obama and McCain!

22. Seconded
Took me ages to work out that my chronic headaches were the result of 20-30 cups of coffee a day and a couple of cokes. Essentially, I didn't drink anything that wasn't caffeinated. Now, I just mix in the occasional can of Sprite or sports drink and I'm fine.

2. A hug for you, your daughter and family
Edited on Fri May-16-08 07:26 PM by livetohike
 I've had migraines for 40 years now - if I had that pain every day it would be so unbearable. I hope the chiropractor and headache clinic will have a quick remedy.

I'm so jealous you get to see Obama. Good for you all :toast:.

7. I am sure you have researched all the alternatives, but just want to mention FOOD, as the
the number 1 reason for all illnesses. My sister suffers from migraines and has cut out all high fructose corn syrup, sulfides ( this is major) preservatives in general. I hope you get relief fast.

10. thanks
they aren't migraines, and don't seem to have triggers, but we're committed to trying everything we can anyway.

I look into sulfides.

21. Here is a link to the food additive triggers that may cause migraines.
There is a lot about this on the internet:

http://www.about-headaches.com/articles/migraine-headaches/migraine-triggers.php

Food and Food Additives
Foods and food additives are extremely common dietary triggers. While any food can conceivably be a migraine trigger, some foods are more common triggers than others. Food additives such as MSG, artificial sweeteners, sulfites, nitrite and nitrates have all been listed as potential headache triggers. Common food triggers include:

Dairy Products: milk, cream, ice cream, hard cheese, aged cheese (contains the food additives tryamine and sulfites), processed cheese, and brie.

Beverages: caffeine-heavy soft drinks and coffee, and red wine.

Cured/Smoked Meats: ham, bacon and other cured meats containing nitrates or nitrite.

Dried Fruits: apricots and other dried fruits preserved with sulfite.

Starches: potatoes and yeast breads.

Legumes: most peas, and beans.

Artificial Sweeteners: aspartame, saccharin.

Chocolate: Migraine Trigger or Not?
Commonly removed from the diet as a precaution, chocolate may not be as common a trigger as was previously thought. Diet chocolate can be used as a substitute, but may contain artificial sweeteners that can also trigger headaches.
Chinese Restaurant Syndrome
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a common flavor enhancer added to Chinese food and Oriental sauces. MSG has been implicated as a common migraine trigger. Many Chinese food restaurants will make dishes without MSG, if requested.

Be aware, though, that MSG is not found only in Chinese food. It is often added to canned soups and seasonings. If you are sensitive to MSG, check labels carefully.

8. And may I mention how helpful
massage can be? I am a massage therapist, and while it isn't a cure, it can greatly reduce the severity and frequency, depending on the cause.

9. the clinic mentioned that.
we are looking into finding a masseuse with some experience with chronic pain sufferers. Biofeedback too. The clinic has all that, but since we can't get in for awhile, I am trying to find interim help.

11. a good chiropractor can make a difference
I wish you the best for your daughter, I know you wish you could
take the pain for her.

I have friends who have been helped greatly by chiropractors.

There are good ones and not so good ones.

Best to you.

16. I'm upset now.. I can't go. I have to work on that day. Its too last minute
for me to change my schedule now. Hopefully, he'll be back this summer... Then I can bring the baby and expose him to the most amazing process that people have.. the vote.. democracy.. and a great rally with awesome, progressive people.. Hey, you working with any local candidates? I saw that the mayor of Dunedin is taking on Young.. it pisses me off.. Sam Simpson has been working her butt off. AND now they are trying to silence her on a year where she'd count. Do you know if there are any Dems running against Gus Bilirakis?

15. Has she had her teeth checked?
My daughter suffered for years with chronic headaches (she's 24) and recently had her wisdom teeth removed. One of them was laying almost sideways under the surface of her gums and it was a very painful recovery, but her headaches disappeared afterwards. The oral surgeon surmised that the tooth was impacting a nerve. It may be worth checking out.

Not that headaches are fun. You're really lucky to be able to see Obama in person. (Hint get there really early so you can get close & take a camera).

18. I know about the headaches
and have lived with the "deal with it" diagnosis for 20 years now.

Some painkillers work better than others.

Everybody needs a thorn in the flesh I guess...

20. I don't know but this ahs helped me greatly
in the last 4 weeks or so. I've had chronic back pain and headaches and my doctor added cymbalta to my medication to help with pain. Even though it's a anti-depressant, after 2-3 weeks of it I've had almost no back pain or headaches it's unbelieveable to me. I hadn't felt this good in ten years. I've was able to eliminate my meds for headaches and cut way down on my anti-infam. and muscle relaxers.

I had a MRI on my brain come back normal wed., that was a great day for me, even though I still need other docters to figure out my endrocine.

good luck Fldem5
