The One Constant Sexist Comment Against Clinton That I Think Is Ridiculous
Edited on Sat May-17-08 12:16 PM by aaaaaa5a
Why is she always criticized for wearing a pantsuit?

A pantsuit is perfectly acceptable as business attire for work, campaigning etc. I mean c'mon, what's she suppose to wear?

Maybe the next time she can be the candidate with the different colored braws?

Do you hear anyone ripping male candidates because they wear a coat and tie?

I'm not a Clinton supporter, but this is one ongoing joke I don't understand. I wince everytime I hear a pantsuit joke. I don't like it.

There are PLENTY of other subjects to joke about concerning Clinton without criticizing common clothing fashion for women.

Her MOB dress looked like it was made from drapes. Gone with the Wind?

They both need to hire fashion consultants. Some women can pull off wearing pants suits (Condi for one), others can't. Hillary, and me, cannot. All they do is make Hillary look shorter and fatter.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Anyone old enough to remember the coming of the pantsuit will remember that the symbolism of the new fashion coincided with the Womans Liberation movement and was derided as "women trying to act like men".

9. While I agree that it's a silly thing to fixate on, most of them ARE butt-ugly and too matchy-matchy
I'm not saying she should wear skirts, but those pantsuits are not terribly flattering or fashionable. It's tough for women, because we're hit with an absurdly different fashion standard than men are, so I feel for her. But if I were her "dresser," I'd certainly choose something different than those matching pantsuits day after day after day.

I hope I can look as good as she does when I'm in my 60's. What I care about in a Presidential candidate is what they say and what they do, but what they wear? I don't even notice what either one of them (or McCain) wear.

14. Ok, I'm a fan of the "power" pantsuit....
in general....but seriously, do you think it Obama came out in a yellow 2 piece suit it wouldn't be talked about?

it's NOT sexism. it's about subtlety--male OR female.

I'm not saying she can't wear bright colors--she actually looks great in brights, but leave it for shirts, blouses and accents. I work in an environment with lot of female executives and I'd have to say brown, gray, black, navy is the way to go. it's an ongoing interview for the biggest job in the country. when in doubt downplay the color. in one debate she wore all brown w/turquoise jewelry and she looked stunning.

HOW many comments have there been about obama's ties, vs. the number of comments about what Sen. Clinton wears? and what about ANY comments on the repukes?

22. I still think that
If Obama wore yellow, pink or red suits it WOULD be commented on.
Obama --- and the majority of men-- are conservative dressers.

( there have been comments about his ties. )

personally, I don't give a crap about what someone wears. personal style is "personal".

but if someone wants to showcase their personal style and be different from the crowd, they should expect comments.
I still say it's not sexist. Maybe that's just me.

for example, if Obama showed up for a debate dressed like this:
http://wonkette.com/361970/obamas-80s-fashion-we-are-the-sweatervest-we-are-waiting-for
do you think there'd be any fashion fall out? yes of course. would it be sexist? No, because he would be breaking
out of the ordinary-gray-suit uniform that is expected of candidates.

Like the time when both Obama and Clinton were in the Senate. I thought the red outfit gave her a distinct advantage.

she did stand out...my only problem is that you can't "stand out" with your fashion and then complain cause people comment on it.
I thought the red suit was great, it shows some confidence to break out of the mold and wear something unexpected--but when you do that, people are going to notice! it's not sexism.

If she'd mix it up a little, it would help. Also so many of them were hideous, like that godawful yellow thing. I've noticed lately they have been much nicer, so apparently the jokes worked.

Mocking people's clothing isn't sexist. And in a political campaign it is relevant to do so, because if people can't even tell when they are making themselves look foolish, what else are they clueless about?

one negative comment about Hillary's pantsuits. What I HAVE heard are several references like yours....references that claim her pantsuits are being ridiculed, which is evidence of sexism.

This is ridiculous. Hillary looks fantastic, her clothes are awesome, and her pantsuits are terrific. No one of significance is saying ANYTHING negative about her attire, or I would have heard something.

You'll have to try harder than this, if you want to convince people that Hillary lost because she is female.

Sign me....a white, middle aged, female feminist.

44. I'm not saying Hillary Clinton Lost Because She Is A Woman...

Quite the contrary.

I think being a woman has HELPED HER.

If a male candidate had run a campaign this poorly, he would have been long gone because he wouldn't have 65% of the women's vote (55% of total Democratic primary voters) to fall back on.

Hillary has also played the gender card, and bashed the media for PERCIEVED unfair coverage.

There is no question that Obama's outstanding record on women's issues (endorsed by NARAL) would have led to him winning the female vote were he not running against Clinton.

If you look at my previous posts you will see that I'm a huge Obama supporter. However I try to be objective. And on this ONE issue, Clinton does take more criticism than her male counterparts because she is a woman.
