"Hey, I resemble that remark!" or "Appeasement? Hey, He's talking about me!"
Sen. Obama tends to get disoriented, said Mayhill Fowler, an Obama supporter who blogs for the Huffington Post.

"Did Senator Obama know to whom he was speaking? Likely not. That's been his problem lately on the campaign trail -- not knowing exactly where he was," Ms. Fowler wrote in a blog post from North Carolina April 30. "Monday in Wilmington, however, not only did he not seem to know Wilmington but the date and the time, saying that it was 'March,' and 'nine months to November.'"

But exhaustion can't explain what Sen. Obama said in Cape Girardeau, Missouri May 13. Sen. Obama blamed a shortage of interpreters in Afghanistan on the war in Iraq: "We only have a certain number of them and if they are all in Iraq, then it is harder for us to use them in Afghanistan," he said.

"The vast majority of military translators in both war zones are drawn from the local population," noted David Wright and Sunlen Miller of ABC News. "Naturally they speak the local language. In Iraq, that's Arabic or Kurdish. In Afghanistan, it's any of a half dozen other languages, including Pashtu, Dari and Farsi."

Agricultural specialists are needed in Afghanistan to help the locals develop crops other than opium poppies, Sen. Obama said. "But if we're sending them to Baghdad, they're not in Afghanistan," he added. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/05/is_obama_ready_for_prime_time.html

"Iraq has many problems, but encouraging farmers to grow food instead of opium isn't one of them," noted Mr. Wright and Ms. Miller.

Sen. Obama has made the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan the principal issue in his campaign. He really ought to know basic facts about those countries.

It is, however, undeniably true that the war in Iraq consumes resources that might otherwise be used in Afghanistan, so the argument Sen. Obama was trying to make is reasonable, even if his examples were ludicrous. But the impression that this isn't a guy who works well without a teleprompter is reinforced.

Sen. Obama's most profound unforced error to date was his response to the speech President Bush made last Thursday to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament.....

Mr. Bush said not a thing about Sen. Obama, but that worthy rushed to say he resembled the president's remark:
"It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack," Sen. Obama said in a statement released by his campaign. "George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the president's extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel."

It's dawned on Sen. Obama's campaign that his "hug a thug" foreign policy is electorally problematic. In an interview with the New York Times published May 10, top foreign policy adviser Susan Rice denied that Sen. Obama had pledged to meet without preconditions with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, even though Sen. Obama had made that vow in a nationally televised debate last year, and has repeated it since.

If you're trying to back away from a record of naive squishiness, it isn't a good idea to call attention to it in so gratuitous and so dramatic a fashion as Sen. Obama has.

Here are some words of Hussein Massawi, the former leader of Hezbollah:

"We are not fighting so that you will offer us something. We are fighting to eliminate you."

Are his actions consistent with those words? Amazingly so. So, too, are those of Hezbollah's patrons in Tehran.

She exists to torpedo him. She did so with the "bitter" comment, and with this column, she's now out in the open.

She's a plant. Not sure whether a Hillary or GOP plant, but does it really matter anymore?

Many of us on the left noticed that the speech from b*sh in Israel did not mention Obama, but Obama was quick to jump up, arm extended and yell "Hey, he's talking 'bout me!"

51. I don't use Freeper-like attacks. I don't post anti-Hillary threads--just offer my
opinion of her and her campaign. Most Obama supporters on DU cry foul when someone posts a Vince Foster/Mena Airport/Monica-type thread. I don't anymore (I used to, but all sense of fair play has gone out my window), but the vast majority of Obama supporters are simply frustrated at the Clintons, not out to ruin them or compare them unfavorably to Republicans--most stick up for Hillary when it's called for. Hillary is not the topic here, anyway. There is absolutely nothing in this post that concerns her or would help her, so why chime in to defend the poster?

54. I want you to acknowledge the line that exists between
a thread that helps Hillary win the primary, even if it has an attack element to it, and a thread that simply spreads a RW attack against Obama, but has nothing to do with improving Hillary's chances. You do see a difference, right? The easiest way for Freeper-types to try to spread their crap here is to mask themselves as a Hillary supporter--it would be the same if Hillary was the presumed nominee, and I knew Obama didn't stand a chance, but decided simply to pretend to still be fighting for him while I posted GOP stuff that would damage Hillary in the fall. As long as the mods and admins do little to sort out the genuine Hillary supporters, who may certainly post genuine discussion threads about concerns about Obama, from the folks who simply use her as an excuse to spread damaging shit about our presumptive nominee, we'll keep seeing shit like this (Obama's weak on defense, Obama hates Israel, Obama is a commie, Obama is an appeaser, etc.--all RW bullshit, at this point. Not even Hillary uses these lines of attack now.) It's all in the motive.

49. You are correct. The mods and admins will let it fly here to be perceived as "fair to Hillary."
No matter how much attack dog BS is spewed all over this site by the "it's not fair!" Hillary crowd - even to the point of plainly saying they won't vote for Obama if he's the nominee - the mods and admins are bending over backwards to give them their say.

The response of the extreme Hillary backers to the fund raising drive demonstrates to me that the admins are wasting their time. No matter what they do - short of merging with "Hillaryis44" and banning pro-Obama posts - they are going to get zero credit for allowing the Hillary backers free reign here.

I can live with that now, frankly. Expectations change once Obama has clinched the nomination. Then, if Hillary wants to tear the party apart with a floor fight at the convention, I don't want DU to be any part of being an "enabler" in making that happen. Hopefully, she will bow out no later than June 4, and all this will end. Until then, hold your nose and keep a good thought for our next president.

Trouble is, Obama was in Sioux Falls.

So was the crowd, which suddenly fell silent. Where are those Southwest Airlines get-away flights when you need them?

"I'm sorry," Obama quickly caught himself. "Sioux Falls. I've been in Iowa too long." Now, that line may not go over too well in the Hawkeye State, which gave him his first big caucus win way back in January.

where do they make the connection between agro specialists in Iraq being there to prevent opium planting.

So because they arent there to prevent opium planting they wouldnt be helpfuull in afghanistan?

30. another BLATANT attempt to smear - typical Clinton tactics
the people doing this "analysis" are either dumb as bricks or intentionally misunderstanding.

Agricultural specialists are needed in Afghanistan to help the locals develop crops other than opium poppies, Sen. Obama said. "But if we're sending them to Baghdad, they're not in Afghanistan," he added.

"Iraq has many problems, but encouraging farmers to grow food instead of opium isn't one of them," noted Mr. Wright and Ms. Miller.

-- saying that agriculture specialists are in Iraq is NOT the same thing as saying Iraq is growing opium. Agricultural specialists do not just deal with those who grow opium.

get it?

I have to wonder if Wright and Miller are really that stupid. -- or maybe they're intentionally misunderstanding.

The truth is that the U.S. does have a shortage of interpreters. This has been a big deal since our military FIRED interpreters when they found out these ppl were gay. Again and again the issue of America's lack of language experts has been mentioned as one of the reasons the U.S. has had problems dealing with situations there. Iraqis have died merely because they have worked as translators.

But of course, knowing these facts and how they might impact the U.S. presence in Iraq isn't as imp. as trying to smear the Democratic presidential candidate.

You repeat the right-wing talking point about appeasement in relation to Israel. The person who wrote this article repeats Kevin James' STUPID assertion that talking equals appeasement. This bullshit fits right in with the other right wing lies you posted here about problems with a former President Clinton advisor meeting with Hamas when it is part of his current job to do so. The guy works for an Intern'l Org. that seeks to create peaceful solutions.

You know, there are a lot of Israelis that are FAR more liberal, far less reactionary than Americans when it comes to their own foreign policy.

This editorial is obviously a hit piece.

39. The guy stepped down so that bullshitters couldn't make him the issue.
I've posted information about this guy on your threads before but you keep posting the same old McCain campaign smears.

http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/05/obama_adviser_c_1.html

Robert Malley, a former Clinton administration officials, held the meetings as part of his job with the International Crisis Group in the Middle East.

But Obama has been squabbling with Republican John McCain over Hamas. On Thursday, Obama accused McCain of trying to smear him by suggesting that Hamas wants him to win the presidency.

Malley told NBC that he was becoming a "distraction" so he thought it best to disassociate himself from the Obama campaign.

International Crisis Group in the Middle East is part of a larger org. that operates on every continent in this world.

http://www.crisisgroup.org/home/index.cfm

The International Crisis Group (ICG) is an independent, international, non-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission is to prevent and resolve deadly conflicts around the world through field-based analyses and high-level advocacy.

The ICG is considered the world’s leading independent, non-partisan, source of analysis and advice to governments, and intergovernmental bodies like the United Nations, European Union and World Bank, on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. Its primary goals are a unique combination of field-based analysis, sharp-edged policy prescription, and high-level advocacy, with key roles being played by a senior management team highly experienced in government and by a highly active Board of Trustees containing many senior diplomats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Crisis_Group

See??? The TRUTH is that the guy resigned b/c of right wing bullshit smears. Not because he was doing anything wrong. He is part of one of the most prestigious peacemaking organizations in the world.

Of course, the truth isn't useful when you simply want to undermine someone, no matter what the facts may be.

your arguments at this point are simply silly.

Obama and Hillary and about half a dozen other democrats defended Obama's campaign on this issue. The reason the guy left was to stop the bullshit. Obama is then supposed to call attention to this?

You know, a friend of mine works with severely disabled kids. One of them is autistic and has gone through puberty. This boy likes to take off all his clothes and walk around and masterbate in public.
The kid knows he's not supposed to masterbate in public b/c people have told him, repeatedly, that this isn't okay.

Instead of stopping the masterbation, however, the kid started putting his left arm up into the air and wiggling his fingers to try to distract everyone from the fact that he was standing naked jerking off in front of total strangers.

Interesting story about human nature.

45. I hope Hillary is taking notice for the future. Learning from Obama....
means winning in her future elections, if she's a good learner.

Obama is not perfect....and does not pretend to be. The key word being "pretend."

Clinton could learn a thing or two: It is better to be yourself, with all your flaws, than to try to pretend to be something you are not (like someone fighting sniper fire with your adolescent daughter by your side...when in fact you were merely exiting a plane to attend a welcoming ceremony involving children).

Obama needs to work on his facts; actually, these two problems sound like problems with his foreign policy advisor. Judging from Obama's other handling of other campaign issues, and his gift at picking the right people to do the job, I'm sure he will iron this out.

But even so, he will continue to make mistakes. Like all human beings do. He has the makings of a great leader. I am filled with pride that my fellow Americans are voting for him.

(at least he didn't make the mistake of voting for the Iraq War...a mistake that really counts.)

47. Why use Hezbollah as an example?
Obama has never said he would meet unconditionally with terrorists or with leaders who sponsor terrorism, and he's right. If you disagree that diplomacy is always preferential to war, then I don't really understand why you torture yourself by putting the (D) beside your name.

62. He has said repeatedly that he would meet with Iran's leaders without precondition.
Iran is the leading sponsor of terrorism through Hamas and Hezbollah.

You had to have known this.

66. Take the time to read the post I responded to.
This is what he/she claimed- "Obama has never said he would meet unconditionally with terrorists or with leaders who sponsor terrorism, and he's right. "

You need to slow down before you post.

57. So Clinton supporters, in addition to donating to McCain, are now backing him up on his attacks.

58. No swiftboating. No letting a "wink and a nudge" by the Rovians go by.
Post your hate, but the bottom line is that the Obama campaign is not going to play nice with Bush tactics. They will fight back.

You ought to know that. The Clintons are an extraordinarily powerful machine. And tough. And he has beaten her. You post this out of sour grapes, but it was a tremendously effective, in your face response by the Obama team.

Otherwise it wouldn't be here. Thanks.

60. Classic misdirection...
'Agricultural specialists are needed in Afghanistan to help the locals develop crops other than opium poppies, Sen. Obama said. "But if we're sending them to Baghdad, they're not in Afghanistan," he added. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/05/is_ob...

"Iraq has many problems, but encouraging farmers to grow food instead of opium isn't one of them," noted Mr. Wright and Ms. Miller.'

On the other hand, if agricultural specialists are working in Iraq, they can't work on growing food more efficiently (and thus profitably) in Afghanistan. Obama never suggested they were trying to prevent the growth of opium in Iraq. Wright and Miller seem to have a hazy idea of what agricultural scientists do for a living.

in Afghanistan?

69. It WAS him and others. White House aides said so. Do you disagree???
Edited on Sat May-17-08 06:54 PM by jenmito
Bush said, "Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along."

AND: "White House officials denied Obama was a target of Bush's remarks. But privately, White House aides indicated the criticism was aimed at various Democrats, including Obama and former President Jimmy Carter."
