Yesterday I discovered an astonishing audio recording of a sermon, by controversial McCain endorser Pastor John Hagee, in which Hagee elaborates on his view that Hitler and the Nazis were divine agents sent by God to (with gruesome inefficiency it would seem) chase Europe's Jews towards Palestine. In his 2006 book "Jerusalem Countdown", Hagee proposed that anti-Semitism, and thus the Holocaust, was the fault of Jews themselves - the result of an age old divine curse incurred by the ancient Hebrews through worshiping idols and passed, down the ages, to all Jews now alive. In the sermon Hagee also clarifies a point, on his theological views, that has long concerned me.

Not even close. He says that they are spiritually dead. This is the normal lexicon of revival preachers. Anybody who is not "on fire for the Lord" is said to be 'spiritually dead'. Anybody who does not have 'a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ" is said to be 'spiritually dead'.

What he preaches in that sermon is going to be thought a stupid theory by most Christians, but not patently offensive. The Holocaust, after all, is a stumbling block. Because God so loved the world, right? And he particularly loves the Jews, his chosen people, right? Then how or why did he allow so many of them to be slaughtered? Every Christian as they are growing up runs into that question. A question which leads to 3 basic answers. 1) There is no God, 2) the Lord moves in mysterious ways which we can never understand, or 3) it's all part of some end times master plan.

The appeal of the Hagee types is that they purport to teach the deep secrets hidden in scripture. The secrets that explain the past and foretell the future, although not with too much specificity. Something more like Matthew 24: 7 "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places." But if you read that in the Greek the word is "shazbot" which means like a terrible heat which foretells of global warming.

Or some such nonsense. Many Catholics and Protestants will laugh at these bloviating buffoons, but also do not find them particularly loathsome or dangerous.

I could have titled it:

I think all those titles would have been valid, point being: Hagee says a LOT of horrible things. And, Hagee and McCain have given each other mutual endorsments.

In the following audio sermon, which I have put into a video , Hagee says:

- Jews are not "spiritually alive".I have a copy of John Hagee's "Prophecy Study Bible", which makes quite clear Hagee is talking about all Jews now living - whom Hagee singles out, from among all other non-Christians on Earth, to note that they specifically do not have living souls. Indeed, Hagee says the souls of all Jews now living are dead. Dead souls. McCain endorser John hagee says Jews have dead souls.

- Hitler and the Nazis were sent by God, to chase Jews back to the land of Israel. Because that's where God intends them to be. So, the Holocaust was a gruesomely inefficient system of divine "persuasion", and Hitler and the Nazis were doing "God's work". But Hagee also depicts this divine ethnic cleansing imperative as a future project: it will happen .

- In Hagee's 2006 "Jerusalem Countdown", Hagee says anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust, were and are the fault of Jews - a divine curse for worshiping idols.

Now, some people might make the claim that John Hagee himself is not calling for the ethnic cleansing (and genocide) of Jews - he's saying God wills it...

Saying that they are spiritually dead is not the same thing as saying they have dead souls, and most of the church-goers in America are gonna know that. Plus Hagee is very pro-Israel, so attacking him is not likely to play well in many parts of the Jewish community. The more Hagee is mentioned, the more legitimacy that lends to mentions of Wright.

The point I am making by posting this tidbit that is making its way through the series of tubes today is that there is material available to this side of the aisle that will at worst muddy the waters (on whom your finer points of discussion will be completely lost) and hopefully persuade the 527 wingnuts to curb their natural inclination to inflame the electorate for votes.

Not worth sending to media. This one won't stand up to scrutiny if you listen to it closely and understand what Hagee was saying. And it's edited. I want to hear past where it is cut off to fairly judge. Just like I did when I heard the snippets from Wright the media endlessly looped.

The closest this would come to outrage is saying that b/c the Jew who ignored migrating to the biblical Jewish homeland that God sent Hitler as the hunter to hunt them down.

America has exhibited a tacit acceptance (by virtue of not disputing) of the hate-riddled lunatics that align themselves with the Republican party.

The issues may not line up precisely as played out in this thread by people disputing finer points, the crazy factor is there in spades. If the GOP thinks they're going to get mileage (which is hard to believe since they've lost three red seats so far) tying Rev. Wright in with every Democrat on deck this election season, an airing of some of the greatest hits of the crazy they embrace might be in order. Just a thought. ;)
