Hillary Was Mobbed at Kentucky's Maifest!
In a good way, that is. It was like trying to take photos of a rock star!

Tween girls were everywhere, singing "Hillary.... Hilllllarrrrry...." as if they were dancing around a Maypole. They were clearly very excited to have seen her "live."

A few teenage boys wearing Obama stickers infiltrated the crowd. They were respectful. Mostly there with their Hillary supporting parents.

It was a fabulous evening for our Madame President! Here are a few of the pics I was able to shoot:

1. good for her
she is clearly in the "understudy" role now, and it is good for her and for the party to see some positive vibes.

I hope to hell this is not because of anti-Obama sentiment in Ky, but, rather, a validation of the claim that "we have two good candidates"

We need this sort of thing to put all the acrimony to rest and get on with winning the GE.

4. No mention whatsoever of Obama.
No acrimony to be seen.

Maifest is a wine and beer drinking fest, modeled on an old German custom. It is jovial. Folks are there to have fun.

Very strong Clinton presence was everywhere. Several visibility stations selling buttons and t-shirts. Folks were buying too.

I saw three Obama stickers, on boys around 14 years of age. That was it.

Everyone was respectful.

If Obama has any hopes whatsoever of winning over Hilary's supporters he will need to follow our gracious lady's lead. Nothing less.

"Rock star". What's next, cult?

Guess what, Obama supporters are better educated and more successful. We understand more than talking points and use our critical thinking skills in picking a candidate.

I'm not begging for your vote. Ever. Obama ran a better campaign and it will soon be time to start working for the GE. If you want to sit out or vote for McCain, fine. Enjoy watching Roe v Wage being overturned and more soldiers dying in Iraq.

Hillary will never, ever be President. I feel good everytime I type this.

17. This nonsense about "better educated"
In general that usually means more interested in maintaining the status quo. Once that group has their mortgages stabilized, the war in hand and a few other matters sorted I don't imagine they will be up for radical social change of the sort that we actually need.

In truth it is fair to say that no group is for that change in any significant measure. But such change is sure not going to come from those who have the goodies already and who have no vested interested in structural change.

I believe deeply in the importance of education for everyone but I do not believe in the myth that the better educated and more affluent are going to be in the forefront of the "revolution".

159. that is so disrespectful and arrogant
You are demeaning and ridiculing the sacrifices made by so many "nobodies" in the struggle against tyranny and for freedom.

Successful political movements and social progress have always happened when at least a handful of fortunates - those born with intellectual skills, and with the privilege to pursue politics - get off their high horse, put themselves at risk, and humbly contribute their talents and skills to the fight for justice and freedom and a better life for the people. Servants to the people, not masters. Humility and self-sacrifice, not arrogance and contempt and superiority.

On the other hand, seeing the people as merely ignorant masses to be lined up for the purpose of advancing the plans and goals of the more educated or intelligent, is to call for an aristocracy - it is elitist, condescending, and arrogant. It is contradictory to all of the traditional principles and ideals of the Democratic party, and it is the main reason that the people are suspicious of and resistant to us and can be easily swayed to vote Republican.

Not to mention that a few of those are not very convincing revolutionaries. Rather than big talk you should try buckling down and reading Marx, Engels, Lenin, Che, or even Proudhon. Or, better yet, read about the "ignorant masses" that inspired them..in the French Revolution..

But honestly, the Dalai Lama is a revolutionary? By that definition so is my Uncle the Konica-Minolta salesman.

Incidentally, did you mean Gerry Adams?

205. Elitism?
Yeah, there probably is a strain of that but I don't think it matters. Workers of all lands unite, remember? And I'm not particularly arguing mass movements are completely spontaneous or lacking in organizational leadership. But at the same time, the masses ARE the driving force of revolution..name one that defies that fact.

I mean, Lenin did the nearly fucking impossible, but that's not the same thing as the Great Man theory it sounds like you want to apply -- George Sorel sounding bullshit. What Lenin did was build a revolutionary party, the Bolsheviks.

167. there is the problem
This is what is holding us back, what sabotages us politically.

Seeing millions of people as "the people who aren't smart enough to think for themselves" is the exact reason that people vote Republican - in resistance to that attitude. They are right to resist that. They are doing a lot more thinking than many of us are, and have a much more intelligent and perceptive view of the arrogant and condescending ones who have seized control of modern liberalism and the party than most of us do.

No political movement can ever be built by those who see the people this way.

24. It's not about begging but showing some Democratic unity.
Let me preface by saying that I'm supporting Obama.

I don't think this acrimony helps matters. We need to come together as Democrats to win the GE. Obama will need the support of Clinton supporters. (I'm assuming he will be the candidate.)

Most Clinton supporters are not thinking of sitting it out or voting for McCain. I don't assume that just because someone is supporting Clinton, then it's likely that they are thinking of sitting it out or voting for McCain. If they are, that's not fine. I'm not going to beg, but I will try to persuade if possible, and I won't be antagonistic. It doesn't help.

168. thanks
I just want to say I really appreciate your posts.

"Stand strong with the little people - yes, Otherwise intellectuals are just useless mouths to feed (always need to get the perspective from the farm into the discussion lol). Being born intellectual gifts and having the privilege to get a higher education does not make us better people than others. There are so many people with other skills and gifts who contribute so much.

I spent much time in West Virginia back 30 years ago or so, visiting the farms and the mines and the sawmills, learning music from the old timers and marveling at the wealth of traditional skills and arts that the people there knew. I have gone back many times to perform and speak. So much that is good has been lost, and so much more is threatened there.

You have gotten to the heart of my reservations about the Obama campaign, and about much of modern liberalism. Not everyone can, or wants to be "educated and successful" according to how we measure that today - clever, self-serving, modernist, aristocratic - and lord it over others.

43. Wow...
"Guess what, Obama supporters are better educated and more successful."

If some of you Obama supporters out there see no problem in statements like this, then you really don't have a clue what problems await Obama in the GE (should he be the nominee) and just why he's having a problem with the blue collar vote.

Gee, I guess where all those charges of elitism might have arisen?

Really? Hubby and I both have Ph.D's, We make more than 6 figures a year, own three homes, have raised 4 successful children, do not owe anyone any money, have travelled extensively and can do as we please. We are both Hillary supporters as well as educated and succesful, as are most of our friends.

getting elected this November but the Obama are dead set on giving the Republicans another

Obama doesn't owe you anything except to run the country the way he has promised and to continue his record breaking GOTV and fundraising for the all of the down ticket wins we'll be racking up this November.

Trying to justify your actions by pretending like Obama has done something personal to you by running the best campaign is just beyond stupidity. No one is gonna buy that shit.

You still thinking about voting for McCain over Obama and turning republican? In the midst of this fucking zoo, let me quote Willy Wonka:

130. Running a good campaign doesn't make anyone qualified
or experienced enough to 'run' the country. It takes more than "running the best campaign". When Obama gains some political experience in foreign policy, governmental economics, Congressinal approval/backing, etc = experience, perhaps he would be more effective in the role of WH leadership. On the job training only works well in th corporate world (sometimes).

155. I didn't say it doesn't matter. The point is that it doesn't
guarantee the best leadership ability. Walter Mondale vs. Ronald Reagan is a fine example. Mondale's presidential campaign was far less than glamorous. He was beaten by the rhetorical blockbuster Ronald Reagan who's handlers staged a glittering campaign and managed to make Mondales presentation look ragged. There is no doubt my mind that Mondale was far better qualified to have had that position. Reagan set the tone for corporate rule in the US.

14. I did not mean that disrespectfully
the facts on the ground are what they are. Her only real shot at taking the stage is if something untoward happens. He could falter somehow; he could be proven to have feet of clay. Logic says that then the nominee should be the one with nearly as many fervent supporters, rather than some compromise alternative. If both can be civil and stir up crowds like this, then we can go back to saying we have two great choices.

84. Show me how Hillary's poster is anything more than similar styling
Because it isn't anything more than that and it's certainly nowhere near "exactly like Obama's". The style itself has been incredibly common since the 60's. Obama's poster is striking and very well done but to deem it so original that anything using similar styling is copying -- well, that's just beyond silly. Sorry. Go back and study up on the concert and advertizing posters of the 60's and you'll find plenty of examples. I don't have the time nor the inclination to tutor you on the art of the poster in a DU thread.

Just call me another of those ignorant, less educated West Virginians who can recognize when a poster and a candidate aren't as original as some may believe.

96. Let's see, where to begin .........
The exact same color choice.

Nearly similar striking pose.

Same font.

Now this is where it gets tricky and seperates artist in style and design. Look at a four color Warhol and you will notice shadowing and emphasis on certain facial parts, namely eyes and mouth, but lacks distinction. On the Che poster you will notice a more rough and crude splatter style.

On the Obama poster you will notice an emphasis on facial expression, namely around the cheeks and the cleft between nose and mouth. The shadowing is unique in that it emboldens and highlights those parts of the anatomy that shows he is a serious man with a vision. Narrowed eyes pointing upwards to show his vision, his mouth formed just short of a Mona Lisa smile to show he's serious with lines outlining his mouth to show his wisdom.

You know what? You're right, Hillary's looks nothing like that. She just looks pissed off.

Nearly similar head shot? Are we reaching or what? Would you like to see a gazillion other similar striking poses of politicans?

My God... this has to be one of the most ridiculous subthreads in which I've EVER participated on this forum.

212. Artist
Hi Ex, here's a little info on the artist of the Obama poster. Read about him in the Post just yesterday. Apparently he's quite a famous graffiti artist.

(snip) Fairey's artwork follows the style of his predecessors. His Obama posters (and lots of his commercial and fine art work) are reworkings of the techniques of revolutionary propagandists -- the bright colors, bold lettering, geometric simplicity, heroic poses -- the "art with a purpose" created by constructivists in the early Soviet Union, like Alexander Rodchenko and the Stenberg brothers, and by America's own Depression-era Works Projects Administration.

70. The designs principles are not necessarily original
And the designer himself will admit as much. But the _application_ of it in an american election is relatively uncommon these days I'd say. It is clearly copying the popular Obama posters.

That being said, I don't think it looks like an official Hillary product - just someone that has applied a three color filter in Photoshop.

95. That particular style has made a resurgence in the past few years
Edited on Sun May-18-08 09:50 AM by theHandpuppet
I don't why, particularly, but there seems to be this odd nostalgia for the 70's. Of course, the old concert posters of the 60's and 70's were remarkable works of art.

Like you, I believe this appears to be someone's personal product rather than an official campaign poster, in which case designing the poster to resemble that of Obama's was probably a deliberate play of the visual elements, utilized to make a point. It would be interesting to have the artist comment on its creation and why they chose to create a Hillary poster using the same sort of retro design used in the Obama poster. But you cannot COPY a style. You can incorporate its elements, including certain design elements for any number of reasons. Look at the political posters of the past several decades. They are so much alike if it weren't for the different names on the posters you couldn't tell them apart.

What's old is new again, as the saying goes.

I am a practicing witch and am well aware of the symbolism of the Maypole.

It is also true that the Queen of the May is celebrated at this time.

And it is, in fact, the union of opposites what the May festivals embody ... the coming together that will result in a generous harvest in the fall.

Give it up, it is over. I would say she ran a good campaign but she didn't. If her campaign were run from the beginning like it has been run the last 3-4 weeks, she might have won. If she hadn't sold her soul to look like a hawk and voted for IWR she would have locked up the nomination before this whole process started. Actions have consequences.

114. Not to be a contrarian...
... but there are two sides to every story.

I didn't attend, but several of my friends did, all of whom are Obama supporters and went out of curiousity, and to get a glimpse of an historic presidential candidate! Also, they were in Covington for Maifest anyway. :-) Now, susan mentioned there were a few kids in the crowd with Obama stickers, but the Obama supporters I know said there were plenty of Obama people there, just not "decked out" as such.

I heard that people were disappointed that Senator Clinton only spoke for fifteen minutes, and used much of the time to bash Obama (by suggesting he's not campaigning in Kentucky for a reason... yes, no kidding), and again repeated her claim that she's won the popular vote. I find this kind of stumping to be misleading at best, so I was sorry to hear that.

She did attract a good crowd, but nothing spectacular. Judging from the photos, the crowd filled a city block between 5th and 6th.

Hillary will surely win Kentucky and with big numbers that she can be proud of. But Northern Kentucky is essentially a Cincinnati suburb, and as we all know from the Ohio Primary, Cincinnati remains Obama's most solid area of Ohio support.

Thanks for the great post, susan, and the photos. Glad you were able to make it there, and I offer this post only as an alternate view of Clinton's visit to Maifest. I really wish I could have attended, I'd love to see Senator Clinton up-close!

If so they had no more than 200 people according to local news, and a lot were their for the free beer, YES FREE BEER I shit you not. Cincinnati local news were talking about it last night, they went on to say they're were as many reporters and supporters.

177. It is yet to be determined if Obama will continue to be loved by
his fans if he manages to get the WH. If he fails to come through on his political promises and proves to be inept, will that love and respect remain or evaporate like the love and respect some here had for Clinton before this unruly campaign? A gamble on unknowns can lead to either a good or bad marriage or a win or a loss at the casino.

214. Covington is just across the river from Cincinnati.
And yes, it is a German area... and a German festival.

I arrived late, because traffic was so heavy. I did not hear her speech, and the crowd was already dispersing..... but I still could not get anywhere near Sen. Clinton. Many folks were excited to have seen her live. They were trying to shake her hand or get her autograph.

It was wonderful to walk into such enthusiasm for a Dem. candidate. In these parts, the GOP rules.

Oh, and as for newspaper accounts... never believe them. Not in greater Cincy. The newspapers here are all GOP owned. And we never get fair covereage of any Dem.

I'm a Brit so maybe this is a US/UK thing?

EDIT: Already explained. I'll learn to read the earlier replies eventually. Sounds like a fun event.
