33,000 double ballots issued in Oregon -- oh oh!
I don't see this posted anywhere. Front page of the Oregonian today. People who changed their registration recently have wrongly received two ballots in the mail -- one under the old registration and one under the new registration.

Will there be a problem? Will some voters return two ballots? Will there be trouble counting them?

1. If anyone returns 2 ballots, they will be arrested.
I hope people think before doing something like that.

5. Wow, that is really bad
How do things like that happen? Surely people know they can't send back 2 ballots! I hope it doesn't screw up the Oregon vote count Tuesday.

6. Am not concerned after reading the article in the Oregonian...
But Bradbury and other election officials say the vote-by-mail system has enough safeguards in place to assure that each voter will vote only once. They sent notices and postcards to each of the voters advising them what to do, and now they are confident there won't be double voting.

"I have no question that the signature verification process will catch virtually every one of these," Bradbury says.

The Clinton and Obama campaigns are watching closely. Spokesmen for both campaigns say they aren't aware of problems and expect everyone to vote as intended -- once.

7. The two ballots are different. You get a ballot based on what your registration is.
For example, someone who is an independent only gets a ballot with initiatives on it. If you changed from Republican to Democrat, your two ballots would have the different races on them.

There shouldn't be any trouble counting them. Everyone who changed registration received a mailer explaining how it would all work and that only the ballot that represented your latest registration would be counted.

8. I don't think anyone here is seeing the potential for Hillary...
...to tie up the Oregon results with a challenge.

13. Grasswire, I know what you're thinking but Oregon does not work like Florida.
Cold comfort, I know, having a stranger on the Internet assuring you of something. But Oregon doesn't fuck around when it comes to voting. We take it seriously and any who attempt to exploit this will wind up in the hickory, dickory, dock.

15. Other than the several posts here, I haven't heard any threats to prosecute

and, as each ballot is uniquely coded- and the first ballot codes have already been canceled, they won't register when they're scanned. In addtition, there's still a signature cross check system as well as audits.

The big problem will be with people who are confused about what to do or make a dumb mistake.

9. Having watched the signature verification
I have no doubts the duplicate ballot will be caught. It really is an amazing system.

10. that's beside the point, in desperate politics
The point is that an opening is created for a challenge just to tie things up and tread water for a while longer.

11. Anyone who tries it is going to be in front of a judge shortly thereafter.
So, yes, technically a person who received two ballots could use them. That's not to say that they won't get caught.

If I recall, vote fraud is a felony. Seems like a big risk just to get in a single extra vote.

14. Oregon has terrific security built into their mail-in process.
This last minute surge of switcheroos reeks of Operation Chaos, but I feel fairly confident (now that you've brought it up ((shakes fist))!!!) Oregon has it covered.

17. It's not a problem at all.
The invalid forms will be caught by their bar codes if anyone sends them in. This happens sometimes when people change parties very close to the vote. This year, thanks to Rush and the pariah status of the Republican Party, that has happened a lot more than usual. They are thinking of moving the deadline for changing parties two weeks back to help with this.
