Obama will win the primary and GE and then how long will it take
for DU to turn on him. Like Bill Clinton Obama will govern from the middle. If not he will be a one term president. And while governing from the middle he will upset many here on DU just like Bill in his career had to legislate from the middle and upset many on the left. Because his policies affect both the right and the left President Obama will govern from the middle and upset many here on DU. Many of you will turn on a fellow Democrat just as many have turned (and very ugly I might add) on Bill and Hillary.

27. How? What do you mean? Give some specifics to justify that absurd statement.
And no underhanded 'generalities' either. Don't do like the RW host tried to do to Twety with his 'appeasment" buzzwords. Give some specific examples of times Bill or Hill turned on us.

6. He may let me down, but I like Obama's approach to making policy decisions
I may be in the distinct minority here, but I am not a dogmatic idealogue, and I like the fact that Obama does not seem to be either. I think his views are basically liberal but he is not dogmatic about it. He listens to all sides and goes out of his way to seek out dissenting opinion (in stark contrast to the current president), and I think he can genuinely see both sides of a lot of issues. I'm the same way, and I think it's a good quality for a president to have. So I won't always agree with him but I like the idea of having a president who listens to different ideas and makes decisions thoughtfully.

14. What I expect from a President is the ability to see several sides
to an issue and make an educated decision. I believe Bill did that often when he was President. He was so much more informed and intelligent than Reagan and George I. He should have seen the dire need for tackling global warming and work on getting auto makers to make changes in gas mileage. People probably would have bitched because they couldn't get their bigger and more impressive SUVs. Health care became a non-issue. During his terms in office he was constantly bombarded by lawsuits that were "frivolous" using the repub terms for worthless lawsuits. To this day the repubs rant about frivolous lawsuits. Hillary seems to be Bill's biggest problem, or, could his health be his problem with his mouth lately?

We love to give our opinion on DU. It's a great place to vent. It ain't normal to not have different opinions, we call them sheep.

reason why the DU would turn on him at all.

My point is that even if they have tended to turn on most politicians, this time might be an exception.

10. He has campaigned in the primary from the center-right.
He will move farther right for the GE. He will never govern from the left of center.

Anyone who pretends any differently is deluding themselves.

This is one of the reasons that I don't now, and have never, felt any urge to support him in any way.

12. Gotta stop that 1990's thinking, its 2008
The political pendulum spent 27 yrs moving to the right, in 2003, it started back to the left. If Obama is smart he will govern from where the pendulum will be in 4-6 yrs, thusly staying ahead of the curve.

unlike the OP.

19. We're not that bad here.
After eight years of Bush/Cheney, I know many of us will be thrilled to have a Democratic president. Hopefully then Congress will be able to get things accomplished. For the many progressive anti-war members of this board, Obama will prove himself by bringing the troops home from Iraq.

21. Sooner. Around the time he picks his VP.
Then the complaints will be his campaign is too conservative.

If he loses, he'll be blamed viciously (after resurrecting the Clinton threads).

If he wins, the complaints will be about his Cabinet.

In the end the only real complaint will be that he'll still have troops fighting in Iraq in 2010.

22. It is our job
as progressives to choose among the best options realistically available, support them in their bid for the WH, then hold their feet to the fire once they are in. If we DON'T do the latter, then we really are the cultists we are accused of being. It isn't a matter of turning on anyone. It is a matter of being responsible citizens.

28. Obama is not Bill Clinton
Bill and Hillary Clinton were always about there own ambition. That is not how Obama operates. I expect that Obama will not be as nearly as centrist as Bill was, and for that mater, he won't lose Congress after his first two years, forcing him to capitulate to a Republican controlled Congress for the rest of his presidency.
