The wingnuts are really pushing the "Michelle Obama is fair game" meme.
Hannity, Limbaugh, Ingraham, Gallagher, et al, are all flogging the notion that Michelle's "For the fist time in my adult life I'm proud of my country" comment is somehow a major impediment to an Obama candidacy. Their claim that the words, views, and actions of a spouse will have a very real effect on the President are now being parroted by the dittoheads.
Today a Repug co-worker of mine was in the staff lounge holding forth in front of a decent sized crowd on how Michelle Obama, and by extension, Senator Obama, "needs to be held accountable for those remarks". I innocently interjected myself into the conversation by asking, "So, do you believe that spouses should be a part of this race?" He replied, "Absolutely!" I then responded, "Then what are we to make of the fact that Cindy McCain is an adulteress, a thief who stole from a charity to support her drug habit, and has also displayed a penchant for plagiarism?" Hell, at that point I almost felt sorry for the poor, deluded jerk-off. The lounge erupted in laughter, and without so much as a splutter, he turned and walked out of the room.
Barack Obama was not my first choice, but, by God, it appears that he will be the nominee of the Democratic party, and I will not stand silent and watch him attacked with specious arguments put forward by wingnuts and other assorted bullshit artists.

49. I just wish some one would report the truth. Michelle's words where unfairly edited..
She did not say, "For the first time in my life I am proud of my country"
She said, "For the first time in my life I am REALLY proud of my country"
If you listen to the idiotic Commercial the repukes have put out you hear her say "Rr-proud"

Obviously they realize leaving her words as is, completely changes the meaning they are trying to convey.

IT's really sick

50. No
she said both.

There were two speeches in two cities. In one she said "really proud", in the other just "proud".

But I don't think it substantively changes the meaning either way.

64. I had the same exact exchange as the OP ...
Me, I am a live and let live kind of person, all people are flawed, and all things being equal would be more than happy to have Cindy McCain be pretty much of a who is that figure in this race ...

But, some knucklehead on another open board was railing on Michele and I let him have it ...

Michele, a woman who grew up LEGIT middle class and worked her way up in life, who is a model wife and mother vs a woman of privilege who stole another woman's man, is a pill popping addict and stole pills from her own non-profit to support her drug addiction ...

The string ended there ...

Apparently in the parallel universe which you inhabit, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, Pat Nixon, and Mamie Eisenhower were all subjected to well coordinated attacks by Democrats, as their husbands campaigned for the Presidency. Here on Earth, that never happened.

She's got a loud mouth, and has said some things that someone in her position really shouldn't.

Obama needs to stop telling the GOP 'lay off', because they're never going to, and tell his wife to keep her pie-hole shut about anything political.

Does she have to do double back flips to prove she loves her country? I have never heard anyone say anything remotely simular about Chelsea as they do about Michelle Obama. It seems Black people have to prove they love their country...like they are some fucking aliens in their own country...white people are never questioned.

I myself had respected the Clinton's request, to leave Chelsea out of it.

bash any non GOP black person. Part of it is that they don't understand black culture & values, don't get why many vote Dem, and hate the fact that blacks are moving up in life as middle to upper class citizens. By Michelle saying what she said its their way of attacking black society. These people think that just because Michelle went to an Ivy League school and moved up in life that she has nothing to complain about. The reality is that black people are treated like shit no matter what position they have due to their race. See these people don't get it or don't want to get it because they will start feeling guilty.

I agree with Michelle as a black woman I can count on 1 hand how many times I've felt proud of America. Most of those times came when I was 16 and up.

69. This is like the Rev. Wright thing, too. If one is AA, why would one
have an unqualified love of and pride for this country? Of course it would be ambivalent. Why do they expect unqualified praise for this country from any AA person? Only Rush Limbaugh and such other morans would go full flight ahead trying to make an issue of this, when, if a person only thinks about it, it's obvious. Shows what morans the right wing are.

Barack has shown what his response will be: to call them cowardly attacks on his "family." How perfect is that considering the Right's love affair with the word "family?" They can't win with that argument, mainly because of Obama's willingness to call it what it is.

67. Right-wing radio show hosts have no idea how dangerous these attacks are.
If there were a concentrated effort to go after Cindy McCain as rabidly as the right is going after Obama's wife, we could witness the finest self-destruction in modern politics as John McCain goes positively apeshit trying to act all chivalrous. And if the Democrats followed up his flip-out with an "In your guts, you know he's nuts" kind of ad, his campaign is sunk.

I won't accuse these talk-show hosts of being smart, but if they have a shred of intelligence let alone decency, they will cease these attacks on Michelle Obama at once. If not, the Democrats have to play dirty and go after Cindy McCain--which they probably won't have the guts to do. Reference: Kerry, John + Swift Boat Vets + 2004.
