25. It was great. He said he knew how it felt to feel like an outsider. When he was growing up
in Hawaii there were few Black people and he felt that way sometimes. He said how he could identify with them and he would never forget them. He went on to say how they would have annual meetings at the WH of all the Indian nations, he would have a person in his cabinet, etc.

It was very touching - along with his new mom and dad. I liked the part were he emphasized that he only has one wife because some of the language they had used mentioned "wives". He said he could have more parents, but he only had one wife. He wanted to make that clear before he went home.

I loved it.

I liked how he talked about wanting to have more correspondence with the different Indian tribes. I do think they deserve more respect from our federal government. His personal story was very touching.

I'm sorry but when Obama speaks he sounds very sincere and honest.

And I don't even know him, personally. Thanks for the awesome description, Pirate Smile:)

I read this awhile ago and remembering being very happy about it!

23. Obama finished speaking. Not a full stump speech, only spoke of Indian issues. Barack
said earlier today that he is considering creating a National Day of Recognition for Native Americans on the day after Thanksgiving. That would be so great and just.

I'm only sorry CNN cut the feed to it! Awesome speech, shortened but very much to the point and specifically about Native American issues... loved it! I'm so proud to support Barack after seeing how respectful he was and how he's addressing issues others have sadly neglected for too long now.

34. Article: Play of the Day: Obama's new name
Play of the Day: Obama's new name
The Associated Press
Article Launched: 05/19/2008 02:39:29 PM PDT

CROW AGENCY, Mont.—Democrat Barack Obama got a brand-new name as he courted native Americans in the West.
The presidential candidate was adopted as an honorary member of the Crow nation, and given a name that translates as "One who helps people throughout the land."

"What an enormous honor this is," said Obama, occasionally stumbling to pronounce the complex native American names.
"I'm still working on it," he said. "I was just adopted into the tribe, so I'm still working on it."
Obama has actively courted the backing of native Americans throughout the region.

"One of the things I've made a point in doing is meeting tribal leaders everywhere I go," Obama said. "The government to government relationship is going to be a top priority of my administration."
Obama's adoptive parents in the tribe are Harford and Mary Black Eagle.

"Barack Black Eagle," mused Obama. "That is a good name."
Obama said growing up in Hawaii gave him gave him a sensitivity to minority issues.

"Where I grew up there weren't a lot of black families, so I know what it feel like to be an outsider," said Obama. "Now that I'm a member of the family I won't break my commitment to my brothers and sisters."

35. I was in Crow Agency a few months ago
The poverty there is simply indescribable... The level of animus the local whites and even some other native tribes have towards the Crow people is deep and profound. Frankly, I'm stunned and deeply moved that any politician would make time for people who are in many ways "the lowest of the low" in modern-day America. To me, this affirms my sense that Obama is a man of extraordinary character and moral vision. I can't wait to have this guy in the White House.

then that is exactly where Obama should be with his hope. Bless him.

37. yep, that's why I think this is an extraordinary event
P.S. - just to clarify, when I say that the Crow people are "the lowest of the low," I'm talking about their perceived position in American society - I hope nobody thought I was using that term as a personal denigration.
