Yahoo News main page says: Former Klansman Sen. Robert Byrd endorses Barack Obama
Edited on Mon May-19-08 04:10 PM by onehandle
But the article itself is titled "Sen. Robert C. Byrd endorses Obama" when you click on it.

Go to the news page and tell me if this is what you are seeing too.

It's under "More Stories" just under the the big stories at the top of the page.

http://news.yahoo.com

Click on the article title and see the difference.

On edit: Here's a screen capture for posterity:

25. Not despicable at all. Headliens are meant to attract attention
If I was sitll working as a sub-editor (who edits down stories for length and grammar etc., and writes or modifies the headline for best effect) I'd make the same choice.

FYI Byrd denounced the KKK decades ago and has been forgiven by *the vast majority* of Democratic Voters ... except, of course - YOU?

9. Byrd is a former Klansman. That is an historical fact.
He is not now. That is also an historical fact.

From the story...
Byrd has repeatedly apologized for his time in the Ku Klux Klan, which he joined as a young man in the 1940s to fight communism. He also opposed integrating the military, and filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

We will have to wate and see if McCain now says that Obama is support by the KKK.

44. Wait a Minute--Truman was a Former Klan Member?!
Tierra, are you saying that the late President Truman was, like Senator Byrd, at one time a member of the Klan?

This was the president who ordered the desegregation of U.S. armed forces in '48 no less.

Well, for what it's worth, here is what Wikipedia has to say on the subject:

"In 1922, Truman gave a friend $10 for an initiation fee for the Ku Klux Klan but later asked to get his money back; he was never initiated, never attended a meeting, and never claimed membership. Though Truman at times expressed anger towards Jews in his diaries, his business partner and close friend Edward Jacobson was Jewish. Truman's attitudes toward blacks were typical of white Missourians of his era, and were expressed in his casual use of terms like "nigger." Years later, another measure of his racial attitudes would come to the forefront: tales of the abuse, violence, and persecution suffered by many African American veterans upon their return from World War II infuriated Truman, and were a major factor in his decision to use Executive Order 9981 to back civil rights initiatives and desegregate the armed forces."

LOL!

Journalisticly, it's relevant. It makes the endorsement all that much more meaningful to know that it comes from someone who once argued against the civil rights of the person he's endorsing.

Sorry, but that's news.

48. Forgiveness isn't relevent.
When did I say anything about forgiveness?

If you can't see the meaningfulness of a former Klansman (any former Klansman) endorsing a black candidate for president, I'm sorry, but you should have your eyes examined.

Here I thought that only the right wing were people who shove their fingers in their ears, squeeze their eyes shut and say, "I don't want to hear it!"

Why are you so bent on taking it as an offense against Sen. Byrd. It's just a fact. There's no need to judge it one way or the other because he's a FORMER Klansman.

The social reatlity they want to create will be what we hear. Byrd as KKK who supports Obama is the message the media wants us to hear.

Inteligent people have to take these stupid things and investigate them.

Republican's, who can believe seven impossible things before breakfast, make this a part of faith based politics.

Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds

Just so we remember that this "youthful indiscretion" was quite forceful and disgusting.

1) I was repeating a headline to see what people thought before Yahoo scrubbed it, which they now have. Most in this thread didn't seem to be too bothered.

2) Read my signature. I don't support Hillary.
