8. Children for Obama!
Just like that boy in Portland, OR on Sunday. I can't remember another candidate where children were rooting for a President and who seem to understand the difference between a good leader and a bad leader.

13. My grandmother used to tell us to watch how kids & pets act around
strangers, apparently she thought it gave good insight into that person's inner being. I love seeing Obama interact with children, they seem so drawn to him. There is something really special about the man.

therefore giving them their own delegates wouldn't make sense. I heard Obama mention this during a town hall meeting in which he was asked about what he will do to help American Indian reservations.

111. Imagine having a president who actually understands what tribal sovereignty is
Bush answers a question at the Unity conference, organized by the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian-American Journalists Association and the Native American Journalists Association:

MARK TRAHANT: Most school kids learn about government in the context of city, county, state and federal, and of course, tribal governments are not part of that at all. Mr. President, you have been a governor and a president, so you have unique experience looking at it from two directions. What do you think tribal sovereignty means in the 21st century and how do we resolve conflicts between tribes and the federal and state governments?

GEORGE BUSH: Tribal sovereignty means that, it’s sovereign. You’re a—you’re a—you have been given sovereignty and you’re viewed as a sovereign entity.

MARK TRAHANT: Okay.

... and later, Jesse Jackson explains:

BRENT MERRILL: As you saw today at the president’s conference, the leader of the free world does not understand tribal sovereignty. What would you do in your estimation, Reverend, what would you do and how would you advise tribes to educate our folks, just exactly what tribal sovereignty is?

JESSE JACKSON: The President explained. You just didn’t understand. Sovereignty is sovereignty. You understand? It’s like in sovereignity. If you are on a reservation, you have been soverized. Your Ph.D. is in soverbication. You understand? I don’t think you understand.

BRENT MERRILL: You’re right. I didn’t understand that.

137. I think you're on to something.
Growing up near a reservation myself, I recognize that they have special, indigenous concerns relevant to education, land use, water rights, government assistance, et al that are never fully addressed -- or, worse, utterly ignored. Perhaps each of the federated tribes should have per capita delegate representation at least equal to their state average.

will be attending this year's convention. Superdelegate Margaret Campbell from Montana has tipped her hand that she supports Obama but officially has to remain neutral until after their primary. However, each of the four identified American Indian superdelegates/add-ons have endorsed Obama.

124. Ok, lets get technical here :)
Edited on Tue May-20-08 10:01 AM by dbmk
Used Googles image search for "black eagle". Found this:

Then I opened Gimp (open source Photoshop stand-in), and had actually only planned to slap a "Barack Black Eagle" on it but as I searched the barackobama.com for some font and graphics, I came across Faireys poster and figured would be rather cool to use the same design.

Then I went on the hunt in Gimp for the right tool/filter to get the effect needed. Basically had to cut it down to four colours. Took a while before I came across the posterize function (and slapped my forehead, because I knew that). Should be available in most graphics programs.

That made the picture into four colors - and then I used the color exchange function to change the four colours to the ones from the Fairey design. Followed by a lot of cleaning up, to get soft lines and remove detail - except around the eyes and the beak. Scale up, clean lines, scale down, watch result - repeated quite a few times.

Copied the "CHANGE" bit from the original poster and presto.

Doing it in a vector based graphics program would give a nicer result, I think. Didn't have that though.

131. Sweet!
Nice job, even if you self-deprecate. I've been meaning to download/learn gimp for quite awhile. Just like I've been meaning to catalog my 25+ years of photos (including scanning 20+ years of negs at high res) for quite awhile. Ach, to have the time. Why did I choose to have three children and a spouse (wait...strike that...reverse (to quote Willy Wonka))? Oh...that's right...because I love my family! It's the job I need to lose! But somehow maintain the income.

138. Gimp is ok
Compared to PS its a bit heavy to work with on some things, I think. But as a free product I won't complain too much. And since I am far from a professional and only uses it once in a while, its back to square 2 or 3 each time I pick it up.

I think I will try and shine it up a bit and bring a bit closer to the more clean lines of Faireys style and see if I can make it look good at a higher resolution, which someone requested. (the higher resolution that is)

42. This is almost mythic... transcultural...
I don't recall any other candidate in history who was 'adopted' by a native nation.

I'm once again stunned by the transcendent doors opened up by his candidacy...

Maybe I'm just getting old, but there are times I get tearful...

that this could happen here.. in my time..

43. Has a presidential candidate ever had a rally specifically for Native Americans?
Does anyone know?

This is really great. It's something he didn't have to do, but he did - and then he spoke to them directly about issues that are vitally important to them as Native Americans. I think this says something about Obama, and the kind of President he wants to be - and I like it!

113. President Clinton was the first President to visit a reservation since F. D. Roosevelt.
He spent a day at Pine Ridge in 1999. However it was not overtly part of Al Gore's election campaign.

Compare that day with this one and you'll probably have a good idea why America's tribal members tend to lean Democratic.

67. Beautiful Photos, I LOVE ............ BARACK BLACK EAGLE
The name of the tribe, Apsáalooke (IPA: (əpsaːloːke), had been mistranslated by early interpreters as "people of the crows." It actually meant "people
They first encountered Europeans in 1743, two Frenchmen (the La Verendryes brothers from Canada), near the present-day town of Hardin, Montana. These explorers called the Apsáalooke beaux hommes, "handsome men." The Crow termed Europeans as baashchíile, "person with yellow eyes."

Crow mythology

Crow mythology is the belief system of the Crow tribe, Native Americans of the Great Plains area of the United States. The medicine man of the tribe was known as an Akbaalia ("healer").

The Mannegishi are bald humanoids with large eyes and tiny bodies. They were tricksters and may be similar to fairies. They have supposedly been sighted in Massachusetts and are known there as Dover Demons.

Baaxpee is a spiritual power that can cause a person to mature, as well as unusual events or circumstances that force maturation. After transformation, the changed are known as Xapaaliia. Andiciopec is a warrior hero who is invincible to bullets.

112. A note to the Obama staff.
Hello, staff of Barack Obama. Thank you so much for taking this campaign opportunity to visit the Crow in Montana. I'm sure that all of Indian Country will be pleased, but now that you've dipped a toe into the waters of Indian Country, you should be aware of the complicated political undercurrent there.

Historically, the Crow and the Sioux did not always get along very well. In fact all tribes are competitors against one another first and everyone else second. So now that you've visited the Crow, you're effectively bound by diplomacy and good taste to pay a visit to the Sioux tribes of South Dakota.

As you know, it was the larger-than-usual turnout of the Sioux tribes in South Dakota which won the narrow reelection of Senator Tim Johnson in 2002. The Sioux tribes of South Dakota and the Ogalala Sioux in particular paid a terrible price for that support, which I recounted here.

I hope that your campaign will find the time before June 3 to also visit the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. You don't have to make mention of my story and probably shouldn't without independently verifying it, but this should be somewhere in the backs of all your minds: Presidential politics is both important and heartbreaking out that way.

I'm sure you also know that thanks to a couple of terms as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, Senator McCain has a strong foothold in Indian Country. But as powerful as McCain's name is amongst the 560-some tribes in America, he still presided over one of the sadder and more corrupt times in modern tribal history. You have a chance to hit McCain head-on there and win valuable support amongst America's Native Americans.

Again, thank you for your visit and I hope you'll take my advice and make it only one of many visits in the next few weeks.

for a memorial special in honor of Calvin Jumping Bull at the graduation Pow Wow at Oglala Lakota College. There was a lot of "buzz" about the candidacy of Senator Obama in the crowd.

I believe Senator Obama, as president, will direct our nation's strengths to bring focus to our country's neglect of the conditions that exist on many reservations.

In the Spirit of Brotherhood,

mike kohr

International Brotherhood Days
http://www.brotherhooddays.com

p.s.
The Native vote is also responsible for the election of Senator Maria Cantwell (D) WA. The huge Indian turnout and support of Cantwwell was the deciding factor in the defeat of the incumbent Slate Gordon, who was widely considered as unfriendly to wards "Indian Country." And as a side note, the Washington state Republican Party sent in 2004, a resolution to the national convention a proposal calling for the abolition of all tribal governments. The sponsor of the bill advocated the use of the National Guard, the Army and the Marines Corps to carry out the plan.

Without the critical support of Native Americans in these two races the Senate would still be controlled by Republicans.

130. The eagle is sacred
and in the Lakota tradition, black is the color of the West, from where the rains (and life) come. So "Blackeagle" is a powerful name, I would think, though I realize the Crow tradition is different from the Lakota. What is the actual name he was given, and what were the gifts? There would be significance in both.

132. Gifts
"...he was presented with several gifts -- including a bolo tie for him and intricately beaded buckskin baby-carrying pouches for his two daughters."

139. But the Crow invitation said NO SIGNS.
I don't have the message that included it, but it was the press release that the Crow Nation sent out, inviting everyone to the event. It said "no signs." So why are there signs there?

Frankly, the idea of a political event without signs makes a tremendous amount of sense. Why are you waving the sign? Obama knows who he is; he's not McCain, who needs those signs to remember his own name. And the grandstanding of waving those signs blocks Obama from everybody behind you.

147. Signs are usually handed out at Obama events. I think they like to
ensure that there will be no offensive hand painted signs like those found at Hillary rallies.
