MYTH: Obama Supports a Woman's Right to Choose
As an Illinois State Senator, Barack Obama took the coward's way out and did not vote either "yes" or "no." Instead, he voted "present" on seven abortion bills, including a ban on "partial birth abortion," two parental notification laws and three "born alive" bills. In each case, the right vote was clear, but Senator Obama chose political cover over standing and fighting for his convictions.
http://www.illinoisnow.org

His chief of staff talked him out of voting for Roberts:

From the Washington Post:

t was the fall of 2005, and the celebrated young senator -- still new to Capitol Hill but aware of his prospects for higher office -- was thinking about voting to confirm John G. Roberts Jr. as chief justice. Talking with his aides, the Illinois Democrat expressed admiration for Roberts's intellect. Besides, Obama said, if he were president he wouldn't want his judicial nominees opposed simply on ideological grounds.

And then Rouse, his chief of staff, spoke up. This was no Harvard moot-court exercise, he said. If Obama voted for Roberts, Rouse told him, people would remind him of that every time the Supreme Court issued another conservative ruling, something that could cripple a future presidential run. Obama took it in. And when the roll was called, he voted no.

Of course, other Democrats actually voted for Roberts, including Chris Dodd and Russ Feingold.

you really believe what you are posting? You REALLY do?

IF you do, then you must think that EVERYONE who spends their days following the goings on in American politics stupid.

And no, in case you were GOING to ask... I don't have better things to do. I won't until AFTER we elect a DEM to POTUS.

This is my passion and my life, This is my country. If you think that Obama does not support a woman's right to choose, then you are either ill informed or intentionally trying to flame this forumn.

28. A Present Vote is neither No nor Yes. It is used to express technical reservations about a bill,
Edited on Mon May-19-08 10:07 PM by patrice
which, if the bill fails, may be addressed again in committee. If the bill succeeds, you and your technical issues are out of luck, so depending upon how close a given bill is to either failing or succeeding for you personally, the Present Vote represents a particularly sophisticated negotiation skill that MUST be based on a very clear perception of where all of the other votes are in the voting body.

If you really want to discuss the use of the Present Vote, you need to present the texts of the bills that Obama voted Present on, so we can discuss which technicalities were close to his policy statements and which technicalities were further away from his policy statements. We also need the voting record of the Illinois Senate on each bill, so we can compare what Obama did to what everyone else did.

P.S. I realize that an attitude being neither No nor Yes is something a little too hard for some people to understand, but just give it a try. I bet you can do it.

Who has more balls of these two? Hillary spent her whole political life fighting for woman's rights and Obama wouldn't even take a stand...yet he gets NARAL's support! Outrageous! Everything is so political it's disgusting. I really wonder if he will have the nerve to ever take a controversial stand as president... if he feared he'd lose some supports?
