2. Obama Reaches Out To Indian Country...Watch Closely

Obama Reaches Out To Indian Country...Watch Closely

Mark Nickolas on May 19, 2008 at the Political Base

In 2002, Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) won re-election by 524 votes with the race coming down to our ability to get a large turnout on the nine Sioux Indian reservations in South Dakota (I was Tim's deputy campaign manager at the time). While American Indians are strong Democratic votes, they historically have not turned-out in large numbers.

During Tim's race, after trailing by several thousand votes throughout the night, we took the lead on the second-to-last precinct to be counted, at about 6:00 am on the day after the election when the Pine Ridge Reservation (Shannon County) pushed us over-the-top. The final vote coming from Pine Ridge was Johnson 2,856 to just 248 for Thune. Remarkably, Pine Ridge's turnout in 2002 was 60 percent greater than the 1,953 who voted in the 2000 presidential general election.

Aside from South Dakota, check out which states have the largest Indian population:

… There is no doubt that for Obama to pull-off victories in AK, MT, and ND, he'll need an concentrated effort on all of the reservations to get turnout to record-levels, just like we did with Tim's race in 2002.

And, oh yeah, Obama's field general is none other than Steve Hildebrand. Steve was Tim Johnson's campaign manager in 2002 (I was his deputy). There's no doubt that Steve will focus on getting the reservations engaged like they never have been before since he knows how.

9. Ok so I was out all day and missed the play by play of GDP
But it appears that Clinton is advancing her case by quoting Rove

And Obama spent a day in a historic meeting with the Crow Indian nation

Did I get it right?

Has there ever been a more apporpriate contrast of the two campaigns than this?

I mean give me a break this is like operating on two different galaxies - how can any Democrat be conflicted about this choice?

Out of posts and too tired for an OP so just a little rant but my god a Presidential candidate engaging Native Americans with that level of dignity.

Beyond anything else the strategic value of it is mindnumbing Native Americans will remember this for 30 years.

But the beauty of this man, every picture becomes an iconic pose that is matched only by the thoughtfulness and wisdom of his words.

We are so lucky.

5. The Field: Kentucky Prediction: Clinton +13 Delegates

Kentucky Prediction: Clinton +13 Delegates

May 19th, 2008 by Al Giordano

There has been some discussion about the Obama strategy of moving on to the general election campaign - his visit to Michigan and upcoming big events in Iowa and Florida - while essentially conceding West Virginia and, now, Kentucky to Senator Clinton.
The Field believes this to be a sound strategy for the following two reasons:

1. While there’s no predicting whether Senator Clinton will choose a graceful exit before the Democratic National Convention or suffer a graceless one brought about by hubris - which is, after all, the eternal story behind all great human tragedies - her coming victory in Kentucky tomorrow night offers her last best chance to go out with a winning smile.

2. The latest Clinton talking point - “More people have voted for me than anybody who’s every run for president before” - has an interesting corollary: Even more people have voted against her than anybody who’s ever run for president before. There’s something just oh-so-Tracy-Flick about making such proclamations. After all, her calculation is based on a contest in Michigan in which she ran unopposed, and for which she cavalierly disregards (disenfranchises?) the votes of the 237,762 supporters of Obama, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson and others who voted “uncommitted” in that state’s non-binding straw poll. Once those votes are brought back into the picture, Clinton now has zero chance of winning the popular vote even by her campaign’s twisted measuring stick. One of the smart things about Obama moving, now, beyond the two Appalachian states left where Clinton would win under any circumstances, is that he hasn’t been there stirring up higher voter turnout. That will give Clinton less “popular vote” metric out of Kentucky with which to hit the superdelegates over the head as she calls them “stupid.”

6. The Field: Oregon Prediction: Obama +12 Delegates
Edited on Mon May-19-08 11:14 PM by WillYourVoteBCounted

The Field - Oregon Prediction: Obama +12 Delegates

May 19th, 2008 by Al Giordano

First, here are some predictions from esteemed colleagues…

Elliot at Election Inspection: Obama 29 delegates, Clinton 23
Poblano: Obama 29 delegates, Clinton 23
PsiFighter37: Obama 32 delegates, Clinton 20

See that limb that PsiFighter37 has crawled out onto?

The Field now joins him there.

The Field projects that Obama will have a big night in Oregon tomorrow, over-performing the polling data as he did in North Carolina two weeks ago. There’s no small amount of magic in the air there for him right now, and a vastly well-trained and equipped organization to deliver those dawdling 11th hour ballots in by 8 p.m. Pacific Time to the drop-off points, so expect a huge turnout (and I suspect that Obama may well over-perform my prediction here).

Anyway, try not to get drunk too early Tuesday night and stay away from the Makers Mark: there will be plenty of opportunity for that when the West Coast returns roll in…

Former Hillary Campaign Manager Wants To Join Obama's Campaign

Monday, May 19, 2008 The Personal IS Political

In other news today, former Hillary campaign manager-apparently turned raging misogynist Patti Solis Doyle is reportedly talking with the Obama campaign about a possible position within Obama's campaign for the general election.

All I have to say is how dare Patti Solis Doyle deny that Hillary isn't the Democratic nominee just because it is mathematically impossible for Hillary to win the nomination, no matter what measure she uses?! And how dare Patti Solis Doyle support the Democrats in the general election if the Party doesn't overturn the will of the people and nominate Hillary instead of Obama?!

Did you know that math is notoriously sexist? It's true, just check it and see for yourself, it thinks that Hillary is behind in every single conceivable measure! That woman-hater!

10. Republicans Can’t Find Any Minorities Dumb Enough To Run With Them

Republicans Can’t Find Any Minorities Dumb Enough To Run With Them

May 19, 2008 Oliver Willis

I for one am shocked to find gambling going on in here.

Just a few years after the Republican Party launched a highly publicized diversity effort, the GOP is heading into the 2008 election without a single minority candidate with a plausible chance of winning a campaign for the House, the Senate or governor.
At a time when Democrats are poised to knock down a historic racial barrier with their presidential nominee, the GOP is fielding only a handful of minority candidates for Congress or statehouses — none of whom seem to have a prayer of victory.

At the start of the Bush years, the Republican National Committee — in tandem with the White House — vowed to usher in a new era of GOP minority outreach. As George W. Bush winds down his presidency, Republicans are now on the verge of going six — and probably more — years without an African-American governor, senator or House member.
That’s the longest such streak since the 1980s.

Wanted: Racial minorities to stab your own people in the back, provide cover to destructive policies. Perks include a life long association with the party of Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott, and The Southern Strategy. Inquire Within.

In Montana a few minutes ago, MSNBC reports, Obama asked
"what are John McCain and George Bush afraid of?"

He said he does not fear a "propaganda battle" with Iran"
and that the reason Iran has gained influence in recent years is because of "Bush-McCain policies."

Hillary Camp: Obama's "Plan" To Declare Victory Is Insult To Her "17 Million Supporters"

By Greg Sargent - May 19, 2008

The Hillary campaign sends out a memo hitting Obama for allegedly planning to declare victory tomorrow night, if he secures a majority of the pledged delegates after tomorrow's voting. Here's the key graf...

Senator Obama's plan to declare himself the Democratic nominee tomorrow night in Iowa is a slap in the face to the millions of voters in the remaining primary states and to Senator Clinton's 17 million supporters.

The key there is the idea that this is an insult to Hillary's millions of supporters, a not-so-subtle suggestion to the Obama forces that she holds millions of Democrats in her pocket and that he'd better make nice if he wants to win them over.

Separately, it's worth noting that the claim that Obama has a "plan" to do this appears to rest on a single anonymous quote given to The Politico several weeks ago.

Declare Victory Tomorrow, Obama

Andrew Sullivan
19 May 2008 08:35 pm

The Jed Report makes the case.
The Clintons will never go quietly or gracefully. They couldn't even leave the White House without pardoning a few sleazebags and stealing a few gifts. I know the dangers of provoking the wave of victimhood that Clinton will invoke if anyone dares to point out that she has lost. But at some point the sheer classless, graceless sore-loser tackiness of the couple requires an end to the enabling.

Obama, one fears, is too much of a gentleman. You can't always maintain class with people who have none.

Warren Buffett Endorses Obama UPDATEDx2

by Pragmaticus Mon May 19, 2008

Warren Buffett, the "Oracle of Omaha" (or "Sage of Omaha", take your pick), has endorsed Barack Obama for President.

In Frankfurt, Germany, today, billionaire Warren Buffett announced his support for Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. He said that he offered support to both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama, but because it appeared that Obama would win the Democratic nomination, he is endorsing Senator Obama.

"I will be very happy if he is elected President. He is my choice."
Although many of the super-rich choose to align themselves with Republicans, Buffett, head of Berkshire Hathaway, has been a supporter of Democrats. He was one of Sen. John Kerry's economic advisors during his 2004 presidential run.

Buffett thinks the dollar will continue to weaken:

… "I think that the US has followed and is following policies which will cause the US dollar to weaken over a long period of time," he said.
After voicing support for Obama, Buffett nonetheless noted the US economy had managed to do "awfully well" despite a depression, two world wars and many financial crises.

Hillary’s BFF Pat Buchanan was duking it out with Bob Shrum over Barack Obama’s electability today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe when he blurted this out:

He’s leading in Oregon where they all got ten-speed bikes. Ask him how well he’s going to do in Kentucky.

As you can imagine, laughter immediately ensued. You can watch it after the 5:00 mark below.

p.s. I haven’t thought much of Shrum as a political consultant, but he’s been pretty darn good on the tee vees of late.

20. Clinton dead-enders

Clinton dead-enders

Posted by Betty Cracker at 5/19/2008

As it becomes increasingly obvious -- even to the willfully obtuse -- that Senator Clinton's campaign is ensnared in the porcelain vortex,
many Obama supporters, including Obama himself, are calling for party unity. I think the vast majority of Clinton supporters will eventually come around. If they are at all on board with their candidate's platform, they'll have to recognize that Obama would be preferable to McCain,
even if they've developed a personal antipathy to Obama during the bruising primary season.

Heck, I understand exactly how that faction feels. Obama is on the cusp of becoming the first primary candidate I have ever supported who made it. Bye-bye, Bill Bradley. Hasta la vista, Howard Dean. I could go on. But what I don't get -- not in a post-Nader vs. Gore vs. Bush and Iraq-disaster, Scalia-appointed planet -- is why Clinton supporters would actively campaign for McCain like these yahoos:

Just talked to a 55-year-old Columbus, Ohio resident named Cynthia Ruccia, a spokesperson and organizer for a group calling itself "Clinton Supporters Count Too." ..."We have a plan to campaign against the Democratic nominee," the group said in a press release Thursday. "We have the (wo)manpower and the money to make our threat real. And there are millions of supporters who will back us up in the swing states. If you don’t listen to our voice now, you will hear from us later."

those who are making childish threats are clearly caught up in a cult of personality thing and don't give a shit about little issues like the Supreme Court and the war. They deserve all the derision that can be heaped upon them.

I know John McCain’s campaign is filled to the brim with lobbyists who know nothng of the real America as they shuttle between their tony Georgetown mansions and their cushy K street offices, but the idea that McCain is going
to run as the pro-NAFTA candidate is mighty stupid.
Even among people inclined to be pro-trade (like me), it’s not as if NAFTA is
something to go dancing in the streets for. And he’s going to go to places like Michigan with that message? Okay.

38. CNN Political Ticker: Poll: Obama gaining support with key Clinton demographics
Poll: Obama gaining support with key Clinton demographics

Posted: 01:40 PM ET

From CNN Associate Producer Martina Stewart

Sen. Clinton was introduced by her husband at a campaign event in Louisville, Kentucky Monday.
(CNN) – A day after Sen. Hillary Clinton declared that the Democratic nomination fight was “nowhere near over,” polling data released Tuesday suggest Clinton is losing ground with key demographic groups that have powered her campaign so far.

Sen. Barack Obama’s 16-point lead over Clinton in the latest Gallup daily tracking poll of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters comes from even higher support among groups that have been supporting him throughout the primary race, and from newfound support among several groups that have backed Clinton.

Obama leads or ties Clinton among women, Easterners, whites, adults with no college education, and Hispanics, with the New York senator’s support now below 50 percent in each group, according to Gallup. Both are backed by 47 percent of white voters surveyed, and Obama is essentially tied with Clinton – 47 percent to 46 percent – among Democrats whose education level is a high school diploma or less.

Clinton’s advantage among women overall seems to have evaporated, with Obama now holding a lead within the survey’s three point margin of error, 49 percent to 46 percent. Hispanics favor Obama over Clinton by 7 percentage points, 51 percent to 44 percent. And Obama now leads among voters in Eastern states by 9 percentage points over Clinton – 52 percent to 43 percent.

39. Bill Richardson to campaign for Obama in Puerto Rico
CNN:

NEW YORK (CNN) – Former presidential rival turned supporter Bill Richardson will campaign this week for Barack Obama in Puerto Rico, 10 days before the Commonwealth holds its Democratic primary, a Richardson aide tells CNN.

Richardson, the governor of New Mexico and former Cabinet official, is one of the most prominent Hispanic politicians in the nation. He sought the Democratic presidential nomination, but dropped out of the race after a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary.

While Richardson served in President Bill Clinton’s Cabinet, he chose to endorse Obama over Hillary Clinton in late March. Hillary Clinton has performed better than Obama with Hispanic voters, although the latest Gallup tracking poll suggests that the Illinois senator has erased his disadvantage with that key voting bloc.

Richardson will visit the Commonwealth on Thursday.
