How the FUCK did you come to that conclusion. You just made an unbelievable ass of yourself on the TODAY SHOW.

By what standards do you justify calling Obama a sexist?

You cite Obama's brushing the dirt off of his shoulder?

There is 10 times more evidence that you are a fucking racist bigot. Jeeze!

55. Umm, yeah she did say that
Geraldine claimed that Obama and others had been sexist. Then Meredith posed the question posed to her to name specific examples of Obama being sexist. She kind of stumbled through her first example and then she brought up the shoulder brushing incident. That was her answer to the question about how Obama had been sexist to Hillary.

Thanks for playing. Pick up your parting gift at the door.

205. She said in reply to Meridith asking her to site specific examples of Obama being sexist
"Well, I'll tell you several things, but that is not what I said. What I said was I'm taking my que from Michelle Obama. Who in February of this year when she was asked if she would support Hillary if she were the candidate and not her husband said, she would have to think about it. Michelle paused for a minute and said she would have to think about that. Now to be quite frank Marilyn, Meridith, if I've gone through a series of mud swatches and if I chose Hillary as my candidate in June of last year, July, against other people that I thought were equally competent. Namely, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson and...and...ah, John Edwards. If I choose her because she could run the country in anyway the same as they could, and then gee isn't that terrific that she's a woman, too, and she'll make a difference for women and children in this country. You know, that's not a sexist way of approaching this campaign. How could I as soon as watching all this time, as soon as he becomes the nominee (?) say, oh yeah, I'm with him. I have complained I have complained about how this campaign was done and I don't want to see another woman get attacked this same way when she decides to do it as well.

You asked for specifics, and let me just give you specifics. Women are looking at how this has gone on. I...I...he...he just...he...when he...he after one of the she mentioned after Philadelphia that she had (unintelligible) before Philadelphia that she had gone out and she had learned to shoot a gun. He...he kind of ridiculed her. Who does she think, like a stand up comedian walking up and down with a mike in his hand, who does she think she is, Annie Oakley? And then when something else was said about a campaign, this thing. *flicks her shoulder* Flicking it off. Diminishing her. I mean sorry, that's not done. I mean women don't like that."

Meridith moves on to next question.

113. I saw that - it was as if she just HAD to say it. Too bad there was no time to follow up on that.
She's obviously lost it.

I do wonder where this recent spate of "Hillary is losing because of sexism" accusations are coming from. Even Clinton herself is now outright complaining about sexism in the race while dismissing the impact that racism has had on it, as well.

One thing that is troubling about all of this is that the criticisms of sexism by Sen. Clinton and some of her supporters seem to be focused on how sexism has affected HILLARY, not how sexism impacts most women. On the other hand, whenever Obama has had to address racism in this race - usually because he has been pressed about it - he has turned it away from him personally and directed it toward a discussion about racism in America and how ALL people are affected by it.

I think it's unfortunate that Clinton has not used this as an opportunity to address sexism as it affects most women in this country, not how it may or may not have personally affected her. She still has a chance to do this - I hope she takes it.

Cause this is how it's been all along. Is that your idea of 'hope & change'? Do you really think that will last as a deal closer?

93. Conflating 'criticism' with 'hatred' is something Bush-cons have been
doing for years now.

They call all criticism of Bush 'irrational hatred' as a means of dismissing the uncomfortable facts. Now of course Clinton is no where near as bad as Bush, but I find it rather sad that so many of her supporters refuse to acknowledge the blatant lying and undermining she's committed.

Why can't you do that?

I don't believe the more disgusting "Clinton supporters" are genuine either. There are plenty of trolls sowing discord, and frankly, Clinton supporters are very easy to enrage over rude statements. Clinton supporters are very inclined to paint the Obama people with a very broad brush based on a tiny handful of rude remarks. I've asked you and others to come up with real reasons to back up your disdain for Obama, but you really have very little to justify your assertions. You haven't been exercising discretion in what you choose to base your judgement on.

When you allow a small handful of shitheads to shape your perception, you can be assured your perception is skewed.

Get me the link to this statement, and I will excoriate them personally, because I, like the majority of Obama supporters, bear no 'hatred'.

Without a name and a link I can hardly say anything to this person.

Meanwhile, even being around a while and posting a bunch doesn't mean they're authentic. There have been plenty of sleepers here too.

My point that you broad-brush Obama supporters based on very little is only reinforced by the fact that you're citing one instance you can't seem to prove. Do you understand how it's hard to take your perspective seriously?

204. It has rarely been provided. That, and that very thread PROVES my point.
LOOK at all the Obama supporters telling him to STFU!

I said; "Clinton supporters are very inclined to paint the Obama people with a very broad brush based on a tiny handful of rude remarks. I've asked you and others to come up with real reasons to back up your disdain for Obama, but you really have very little to justify your assertions. How can you deliberately ignore the vast majority of Obama supporters that don't put up with the rare instances of hatred?

Your perception is terribly twisted, as proven by the thread you linked to.

On top of that, the suggestion that I would excuse or dismiss such a disgusting statement is not only insulting, but it is deliberately ignorant of everything I've said in the very posts you've been responding to.

Why do you choose to behave so foolishly?

220. You're falling for provocations by sabotuers and operatives.
Many people are very upset with Clinton for very good reasons. They often give them when they say they don't like her.

But my point here is proven; "When you allow a small handful of shitheads to shape your perception, you can be assured your perception is skewed."

You need to revisit your perspective, it is warped. The fact that you made an outright false claim and assumed that the poster was a genuine Obama supporter without even exercising a modicum of diligence is tantamount to admitting that you want to see hatred from genuine Obama supporters.

Given all the responses you've come up with, that's painfully obvious to me. Do you really not have the introspective ability to see that?

Why would you even suggest that I would 'dismiss' such a horrible statement?

I'll tell you why; because you WANT to believe that I'm hateful.

Your desire to believe that Obama and his supporters are so awful has twisted your perspective, and this exchange has demonstrated that.

Think MF, and learn introspection. Many Obama supporters are OK with the idea of a Clinton presidency, just not her lying and her methods.

The fact of the matter is, the real 'irrational hatred' is coming from people that say they will allow McCain to win rather than vote for Barack Obama because of non-existant 'sexism'.

You've proven here that not only will you allow posers to shape your perspective, but you will tell yourself that they are long-time DUers to reinforce that perspective. Then you would ignore my admonishment of something disgusting, and suggest that I would 'dismiss' it... for no other reason than you want to think of me, and other Obama supporters that way.

Yes MF, your perspective is certainly twisted.

Are you willing to look, or will you continue on making false assumptions to maintain your views?

she has called Obama sexist and she has made racially divisive remarks. This much *is* true. If you or Monkey do not see her remarks ("Obama is lucky to be black" and "I'm only being forced to resign because I'm white"), then I don't think I can agree with you on this. Alas, different perspectives, different ideas... we have other, more important common ground to work on.

88. Yes, it is a different perspective
but I think the "lucky to be black" comment, taken in context, wasn't racist. I think it's perfectly reasonable to conclude that he wouldn't be in the race if he were white. You can disagree with the conclusion, but the reasonng isn't necessarily racist.

He probably wouldn't have been chosen to speak at the '04 convention if he were white. He then probably wouldn't have been elected to the Senate. And if he were, it's unlikely he'd run for President after 2 years. I don't see those observations as racist. You can disagree with them, but they don't imply any sort of racial inferiority on his part, and they don't make a broad-based assumption about african-americans.

I think it's unfortuante that even with Obama in the spotlight, and after his speech on race, we still can't discuss it in any rational way without accusations of racism being thrown in the first two minutes of the discussion.

Hillary Clinton would not be where she is today if she were not a white woman. If she were a black man, she would not have been given the opportunity to sink universal health care in 1993 by her husband, and she would not have gotten the name recognition she would have gotten by marrying Bill Clinton, he would have not been governor or president, and therefore, she would have never been elected to the senate in New York with no prior legislative experience. As a result, she would not be where she is today in the presidential race. She is lucky to be white. She is lucky to be a woman. She is lucky to be a white woman.

What say you?

but it's sexist for Obama to say that he just brushes off Clinton's criticisms of him.

Apparently, in her mind, ANY criticism of a woman is sexist.

And it's also sexist if he DOESN'T criticize her - as a woman quoted in yesterday's NY Times piece claimed: "Nancy Wait, 55, a social worker in Columbia City, Ind., said Mr. Obama was far less qualified than Mrs. Clinton and described as condescending his recent assurances that Mrs. Clinton should stay in the race as long as she liked. "

Oh, well. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

In fact their are so many (debunked) things that Hillary has done that they've gone ahead and just debunked Hillary, although this has caused quite a conundrum. If their own candidate has been debunked for the negative image she has given to Hillary can they still support her?

89. Today Geraldine Ferraro proved she is a sexist.
Only a sexist views all events as the result of sexism. Brushing off silly statements, whoever makes them, is not a sexist action, but claiming they are the result of sexism is itself a sexist act.

Ferraro is part of that very old group of women who think they're still in 1955, and Biff won't let them join the club.

146. The sad part is....
when she (Gerry) was running there was to some degree an essence of sexism. To me that makes this latest claim for Clinton so much more bogus. Hillary has not endured sexism at all compared to what Geraldine went through and even that wasn't alot.

When Geraldine ran she was the brunt of late nite comedians jokes because of who she was. But, what politician isn't?

I can remember bumper stickers from 86' that said crude things like:

"Tits and Fritz in 86"
"Ovaries in the Oval"
"Fritz and no-Witz..... "all that shit."
(don't flame the messenger here, just explaining)

My point is she should know what real sexism looks like and clearly see this is not happening in Hillary's case. There is no other reason I suppose Hillary can explain her dismal campaign and near blow-out loss without playing the professional victim card, that clearly here is not the case, and Geraldine should know it.

Shame on you Geraldine. Your not being honest or you are too far removed to see what is actually going on.

Shinin' the Lite on White Privilege

http://www.prisonactivist.org/cws/sharon.html

In 1920, white women got the vote after 100 years of struggle. But they got it by promising Southern segregationists that they would use the vote to support white supremacy. Today, a divided women's movement still lacks the power to enact mandatory maternity leave for all working parents, despite the fact that women are more than 50% of all voters.

In 1973, abortion finally became legal in the U.S. But white middle class women, the main beneficiaries of Roe v. Wade, did not wield their organizing power to oppose the Hyde Amendment (which restricted abortions for women on welfare) or the sterilization of Puerto Rican and other poor women of color. So when the Right rolled back abortion rights in the 1980's, there was no powerful multi-racial feminist movement to stop it. Today, 80% of U.S. counties are without abortion services.

The legacy of 'the strategy of the slave owners' demonstrates that when oppressed whites protest against their own oppression, while refusing to simultaneously challenge racial oppression and white privilege, they can win short term victories (a union, legislative reform, a constitutional amendment, etc.) But when they organize in this way, they themselves become oppressors of people of color. Their silence is consent to racial oppression and white privilege.

And they sacrifice the possibilities for building coalitions with activists of color which could challenge the power of the descendants of the slave owners -- the capitalist power which oppresses all of us today.

You know, Barack Obama - the guy who has more experience than Ferraro did when SHE thought she was qualified to be one heartbeat away from the presidency? When she ran for vice president, she had been in the U.S. Congress for less than 6 years; prior to that, she was in the Queen's County D.A.s office.

And she has the nerve to claim that Obama - with a resume that puts hers to shame - is not qualified to be President?

What a piece of work.

Her campaign started with a gigantic lead in delegates, name recognition, and money.

She squandered every advantage she had.

I'd call that gross incompetence.

She isn't fit to be President of a large company much less the country.

Because you know it's the black vote which is the only thing he's got going for him.

Meanwhile, she ignored caucus states to her detriment, Mark Penn didn't even know how delegates were apportioned, they wasted money, they ran a very poorly organized campaign, and yet, it's just the fact that people called them on their race-baiting that caused them to implode.

Dream on.

CLINTON PLANNED TO USE GENDER CARD ALL ALONG

RON FOURNIER, AP - Clinton's advisers, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss internal matters, said there is a clear and long-planned strategy to fend off attacks by accusing her male rivals of gathering against her. The idea is to change the subject while making Clinton a sympathetic figure, especially among female voters who often feel outnumbered and bullied on the job. As one adviser put it, Clinton is not the first presidential candidate to play the "woe-is-me card" but she's the first major female presidential candidate to do it.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071101/ap_po/on_deadline_c...

Did Hillary "Play The Gender Card"?
By Greg Sargent - November 2, 2007, 3:51PM

So what really happened here, anyway?
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2007/11/did_hillary_play_the_gender_card.php
After the debate, Hillary's campaign sent out an email describing her as "one tough woman" and deriding the nature of the "piling on" that had ensued. And the next day, AFSCME president Gerald McEntee endorsed Hillary with remarks that almost certainly had plenty of input from the Hillary campaign: "Six guys against Hillary. I’d call that a fair fight. This is one strong woman.:
So just after the debate the campaign didn't argue that she was being attacked because she's a woman. But the campaign clearly did try to strongly emphasize the gender picture here.
--------------------

Hillary pollster Mark Penn subsequently said in a conference call that the image of six men beating up on Hillary would play well with female voters. And anonymous Clinton advisers told the Associated Press that "there is a clear and long-planned strategy to fend off attacks by accusing her male rivals of
gathering against her."
Though one should approach anonymous stuff with caution, this doesn't seem especially difficult to believe.
---------------------------------------------------------
Bottom line: As best as we can determine, Hillary never explicitly made the accusation that the men were piling up on her because she's a woman. But you'd have to be very credulous indeed not to believe that the campaign is explicitly trying to emphasize, for various political reasons, the fact that she's a woman getting hammered by a bunch of men. I don't know if that constitutes "playing the gender card" or not -- the exact meaning of the term is unclear, at least to me -- but that's obviously what's going on.

She was asked what is "sexist" and as an example, she said that gesture was "dismissive". I think being "dismissive" can be construed as being "sexist", which is exactly what she was doing.

The gesture of swiping one's hand off of your shoulder is meant to say just wipe off the criticism and keep going, don't mean a thing. Not wipe off that uppity woman.

258. I Just Don't See It !!!

How can Barack be a sexist when his whole family mainly consists of women?

His wife, two daughters, mother, grand mother. Hell, the man's been around women all his life.

265. What about Hillary's "And the skies will open..." line?
Hillary was far more dismissive of Obama. The brushing off gesture was not even directed at Hillary. He was just indicating how he lets all of the distractions just fall off of him. Hillary (And Ferraro) are just pissed that they continue to try and goad Obama into responding negatively, and he never does.

284. This thread is a sad commentary on the quality of thinking displayed by DU members.
Thoughtful DU members would've hit 'alert' and not 'recommend'.

290. You said: "She didn't say what the OP claims, as the video proves."
When asked for a specific example of BO's sexism she cited BRUSHING OFF HIS SHOULDERS.

That is why you are in denial.
