My friends parents live in Florida and ...
Edited on Tue May-20-08 12:04 PM by The Ghost
are very angered that Hillary is trying to get those votes to count, because they didn't vote as they were told their votes wouldn't count for anything.

WHAT ABOUT THEM, HRC SUPPORTERS?!?!?! How is this fair to them, to try and have the votes counted now?

Ironically, they would have voted for Hillary then, but after her shenanigans, they would vote for Obama if their was a revote!

2. Your parents are worried for nothing
The DNC is not going to give any votes from Florida to Hillary. They are not going to count until Obama is annointed and then they will count. Got it?

3. I said almost the same....
thing a couple of weeks ago. The last thing Hillary wants or needs right now would be a re-vote in Florida. She knows it to.

The top priority of the people I run into here in Florida is NOT Hillary's campaign. The talk of the town is this budget crunch we are saddled with.

Hillary is not the household name it used to be around Fl. More than the margin she won last time are sickened by her campaign tactics.

But thats my observation and opinion.

4. I might have a bit of respect for Clinton on this, if she had shown up in 2000,
when the votes weren't for her, but for the PARTY. But....

... nothing then, so no respect or support for her on this one now.

5. It Was Their Choice Not To Vote
Really, that was their decision not to vote. I knew my vote wouldn't count, but I did my duty anyway and went to the polls.

There was also a very important property tax amendment on the ballot that day. It passed and I'm not alone in believing it will be a disaster for our state. Any Florida voter who couldn't be bothered to go to the polls for that property tax referendum shouldn't whine now about thinking their presidential preference vote wouldn't count.

And if they showed up to vote against the property tax amendment but didn't bother with a presidential preference...well, what would have been the harm even if it "didn't count"?

6. I also showed up to vote against the ammendment...remember, that it
really only meant something to homeowners. I suspect this would cut down on the number of renters who would have otherwise gone to the polls...and what do you suppose the demographics of those non-homeowners would be? I'm guessing a large number of young people and minorities did not bother to vote in Florida.

12. It Does Affect Renters
The tax breaks for homeowners meant greater burdens will be shifted to commercial & rental properties - resulting in higher rents for apartment dwellers.

The tax breaks for people who already owned homes will translate to higher taxes for new homeowners. So, if they ever buy a home...

The reduced revenue may result in: higher fees for services (drivers license, car registration, parks & recreation) or reduced government services (fire, police, social services)

I could go on, but if renters thought since this dealt with property tax it wouldn't affect them, they were sadly (and disastrously) misinformed.

16. I believe every point you make is correct...and I also believe
most renters were sadly misinformed. Here in Orlando, the local newspaper (The Sentinel) did a pretty decent job of laying out the pros and cons of the issue regarding homeowners. I don't recall seeing a run down as you have offered regarding renters. Yeah, a moment or two of thought would have made it clear that landlords would pass down any increase to their tenants, but I'm not sure that kind of thought took place.

13. I rent and I voted.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 12:48 PM by QC
I did it because it was the right thing. That should be reason enough for anyone to vote.

I will give the OP props for one thing, though: the idea that those who bothered to vote should have their votes thrown out in order not to offend those who would not get off their asses and go to the polls is so totally bizarre, even by the Orwellian standards of GD: P, that it is truly a marvel.

were you an exception?

18. I don't know many other renters--most of the people I work with own.
Turnout was pretty heavy for a primary, though, so I suspect that sort of people described in the OP, who would have loved to vote but just couldn't bring themselves to since the primary didn't count, are rare.

The OP is just another rationalization for the DNC's disastrous handling of this situation.

9. Well MY family lives in Michigan
and would have liked a revote.

It appears that the Obama supporters are quite satisfied with the way things turned out. Hillary supporters - not so much. Go figure.

20. Resigned to it, is more like ti..
Obama's campaign has always followed the rules, and just plodded along, winning delegates.

FL & MI out of it..?? you go on without them and run your own campaign..let the party & the states figure what to do. It is NOT up to Obama to settle their problems with the DNC. I have NO doubt that the Clintons & the FL & MI party leaders conspired to get them to jump ahead..

HRC had been stumping around CA all during Nov & Dec gathering money & "early votes" (we EVed starting on 1/7). 1/3 to 1/2 of all votes cast in CA were EVs or absentee..so with FL & MI and a close 2nd to Edwards in Iowa, followed by NH win, she WOULD have "locked it all up by feb5"..

She gambled & she lost..

21. Michigan tried to move up for the 2004 election too - as far back as 2003
So you can blame it on the Clintons if you want - why not? it's fun! - but the reality is that it's worked out very nicely for Obama and he actively worked to prevent a do-over in Michigan. He also ran campaign ads in Florida, so we can jab about "rules" all you want. The fact is, he is willing to accept the nomination without the two states' votes, so I don't think you can seriously claim he's taking the high road about it.

He also engaged in a little puffery about his talk at the Detroit economic club - claiming he told hard truths to the auto industry and they took his remarks in silence, when the tape showed that he had, in fact, received applause. He also made his remarks about fuel efficiency while he himself was driving a Chrysler 300C with a V8 and a Hemi. So you'll have to forgive me if I take any remarks he makes about Michigan with a grain of salt. I speak for myself, not all Michiganders.

11. All I can say to that is, if I lived in Florida
I would definitely have voted because I would have had confidence that my party, especially after the events of 2000, would not carry through with throwing out my vote.

And I am not (any longer) a Clinton supporter but what was done in Florida was wrong, wrong, wrong.

25. That's unfortunate, but 1.7 million people did show up to vote.
Throwing all their votes in the trash just to please your friend's parents would be unfair and unreasonable, IMHO.
