Hillary's Gift to Women

By Barbara Ehrenreich

May 12, 2008

....Far from being the stereotypical feminist-pacifist of your imagination, the woman to get closest to the Oval Office has promised to "obliterate" the toddlers of Tehran--along, of course, with the bomb-builders and Hezbollah supporters. Earlier on, Clinton foreswore even talking to presumptive bad guys, although women are supposed to be the talk addicts of the species. Watch out--was her distinctly unladylike message to Hugo Chávez, Kim Jong-Il and the rest of them--or I'll rip you a new one.

...In Friday's New York Times, Susan Faludi rejoiced over Hillary Clinton's destruction of the myth of female prissiness and innate moral superiority, hailing Clinton's "no-holds-barred pugnacity" and her media reputation as "nasty" and "ruthless." Future female presidential candidates will owe a lot to the race of 2008, Faludi wrote, "when Hillary Clinton broke through the glass floor and got down with the boys."

...Hillary Clinton smashed the myth of innate female moral superiority in the worst possible way--by demonstrating female moral inferiority. We didn't really need her racial innuendos and free-floating bellicosity to establish that women aren't wimps. As a generation of young feminists realizes, the values once thought to be uniquely and genetically female--such as compassion and an aversion to violence--can be found in either sex, and sometimes it's a man who best upholds them...

1. Sadly this one of the most accurate titles I have seen in some time
Hillary should be ashamed of herself, but judging by what I have seen or heard, she isn't. You would have to have some semblence of morals and ethics to be ashamed.

3. Clinton is actually a shining example to all the young women interested in politics...
of what NOT to do.

Hell - she's a great example of that to *anybody*.

5. I've Said in Other Threads
That college level political science classes for decades to come will use her campaign for it's poster child on how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Some people, especially her most strident supporters continue to forget that she had a massive lead in just about every state and in national polling going into last fall. All she had to do was hold on to it.

Hillary absolutely smashed barriers in her historic run. The next woman running will owe a huge debt to her.

After all, it's mostly Hillary Clinton owing debts these days.

12. It's not even a little bit doubtful.
It will be easier for women to run for President because of hillary.

14. Joking aside...
How do you figure? And what is your criteria for "easier"? Clinton's only difficulties in this effort have been those caused by her own campaign. She was practically handed the nomination on a platter, all she had to do was coast. She chose to instead beat her own face against a wall in an effort to appeal to Republifucks.

I believe, if anything, Clinton has made it more difficult for a woman candidate. She's displayed all those wonderful negative stereotypes about women that misogynists love to go on about. The next woman who steps up to run for president is going to be met with "Oh no, not another Hillary" right off the bat, giving her something else to struggle against.

Especially now that Clinton is having another "Everyone who disagrees with me is a sexist fuckhole" meltdown.

18. She has broken through the glass floor
thanks to Hillary, women everywhere have been freed to wallow in the gutters and sewers right alongside their male counterparts, with men like Rush Limbaugh and Karl Rove. Another milestone in the women's rights movement!

Shillary represents all the worse qualities of the human race, regardless of gender.

23. The poster might not have the "experience" to know that...
but...those of us who've been around awhile...have observed it. I think...whatever.. Primal Instinct...I've had enough experience with "women's groups" to understand that sometimes....they will turn on their own.
