If ~46% of the delegates support Clinton as VP, she will be Obama's running mate
Edited on Fri May-23-08 09:06 AM by Onlooker
Clinton can become the VP nominee if she wants. If she has close to half the delegates, she can find some superdelegates and pledged delegates for Obama who will back her as Vice President. Even among Obama's delegates, there are many women, blacks, Democratic Party leaders, and others who would welcome her as VP. If Obama chose someone else and Clinton chose to fight it, she would start with a huge block of support, and I think she would prevail. Whether you like the idea of her as VP or not, that's simply reality.

My understanding of the process is based on this:

3. Delegates tend to respond to the request of the nominee.
I'm not seeing that trend bucked in Denver.

4. This is pure fantasy. Obama will have announced his VP candidate weeks before the convention.
Obama's delegates will not vote to humiliate the party and declare their candidate weak and ineffectual--nor, for that matter, would Clinton's. Once Obama hits 2026, it is completely and totally over. He dictates the whole show.

6. She's going to convince over a hundred delegates to betray the person they just nominated?
Hardly.

8. In addition to convincing every one of her *own* delegates to put her before the party.
If she tried this, I doubt she'd get a third of her delegates on board.

7. I don't really care, but she has to want it first.
I realize that decorum may dictate that he offer it to her, but if
she thinks she has a good shot at Senate Majority Leader under a
Democratic president, she'll have way more influence and power than
any Democratic VP ever would, especially one who won't be running for
president in 8 years. I think it would take extraordinary circumstances
for her to take the job (like a few influential Democratic Senators
telling her that they will not support her for Majority Leader, for example,
and to my knowledge that has not happened).

9. Is this Clinton's meme of the day to the blogsphere?
I'm seeing this everywhere. Its nonsense. The candidate is in charge. Obama is already transitioning to take over the DNC. He'll get his own pick.
