hilarious encounter with out of town liberals, and one rightie.
(i wrote this yesterday, and posted in the obama forum, but thought i would put it here. i enjoyed the whole thing, and more joy is always good.)
i am sitting in a booth in my favorite wateringhole. on my way in, i was accosted by 7 guys who had been asked to leave. i drive a vehicle that begs confrontation. covered with huge stickers, all over, including the full text of the downing street memo. i have been lucky. i have had a few angry reactions, but mostly when i flip the peace sign, it is returned.
so, as i park and get ready to get out, i can see that i am being given the hairy eyeball. one guy gives my the creeps, but others seem to be smiling. when i get out, they ask me if they can pay me to give them a ride. tempted as i was, no way i was letting 7 obviously overserved guy in my car. the conversation, however, quickly swings to the content of the stickers, and to barack obama. (prominently featured.)
several swear they are liberals. i ask for proof, ie a union card. several whip out id's to show that they are from the san fran area, and indeed, one has a union card. one shoots a moon. they ask again for a ride, and a recommendation for a good place to go party, they are on vacation. one says gobama, shakes my hand.
but, i demur, pointing to my pac with my laptop. i was headed in to do some work.
there seems to be only wingnut. he wants to know what barack obama has done for illinios. i set down the pac, and one of them whips out a camera, says, ok, i am taping this.
so, i give them my- favorite reason to support barack- i tell them about the death penalty in illinois, and the legislation barack sponsored to video tape interrogations. the wingnut is burping up soundbites about protecting murderers. he knows that we are talking about innocent men, and i also say- they were innocent, and even tho we let them go, their minds are destroyed. google john burge i tell him. he tries to keep going, but his friends shut him up. \
in the end, i get both hugs and handshakes. pretty funny.
the guy with the camera says he is going to post it at obama.com. hope he does.
really, the conversations that i have been having this season have been amazing.
