Clinton apologies for Kennedy remark
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080523/ap_on_el_pr/clinton

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer
8 minutes ago

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton quickly apologized Friday after citing the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy as a reason to remain in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination despite increasingly long odds.

"I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever," the former first lady said.

The episode occurred as Clinton campaigned in advance of the June 3 South Dakota primary.

37. NO, she basically said

'Why am I still in the race so late in June you ask? Well, Obama might be winning in pledged delegates, superdelegates, states won and the popular vote, but, but, but...I can still hope he'll be assassinated!'

The Race in California in June, 68 could and did make a difference in the race for delegates.

The Race in June, 2008 is over, there are no contests left that make a difference in the race for delegates.

She also referred to her husband - was she also hoping he was assassinated in 1992?

No, dude. Look - the issue is continuing to campaign through June. That Clinton won his nomination in June, and so did RFK. Unfortunately on the same day RFK was assassinated.

So NO!

29. I honestly feel she need not apologize, I have a strong feeling that someone
gave her that to say and we all know regardless that so many of us refuse to believe, most presidential candidates are TOLD what to say, speeches are written for them by others, I have often found this practice to be pathetic to say the least...

When I hear people praising officials for their speeches I want to scream, honestly, if you liked a certain speech than nine times out of ten the person that should be praised is the one hidden behind the curtain, the only thing the speaker should be praised on is in delivery of another's message.

This is a practice that I find abhorrent and wasteful and often leaves me wondering just how intelligent that elected official honestly is, and makes me wonder often do any of them deserve such a high position if they are unable to speak from the heart instead of simply reciting another's thoughts...

The assasinations of the Kennedys have been stated time after time after time from so many, I have never seen such attacks from simply mentioning what is in fact a historical though horrific event that left many Americans in tears and pain.

she was trying to justify why she should stay in the race until the convention, and as justification she offered an assassination of Obama.

There's no going back on that one. If the SDs don't unite against her, I've lost all faith in the Democratic Party.

around the 4:30 mark I believe.

"But I also think it's still early, I mean everybody is so focused on where we are right now, I, I, guess I remember in June of '92 that's when Bill really wrapped up the nomination, the middle of June after the California primary. Um, You know, I remember very well what happened in the California primary in 1968 as Sen. Kennedy won that primary."

She wasn't called on her remarks then and she should have been.

Edited on Fri May-23-08 04:51 PM by ErinBerin84
but I had the day off and took my nephews to a theme part, so I didn't know what was going on on the political front. Then I got to my newphews' house and was reading my grandfather's copy of the Post (yes, he's a Republican. And yes, I am mentioning that it is my grandfather's copy because I am embarassed to read the Post ). In an article discussing the "dream ticket", they had a quote from the Vice Chair of the DLC (sorry, I don't remember the person's name, and I don't really care enough to look it up.) saying that if Obama gets the nomination, that he should pick her as the vice president. And then said "She would make a good president if something were ever to happen to him."

.... I thought "that's kind of a strange thing to say..maybe I'm being overly sensitive about the implications.( were there any threads on that quote today? I haven't checked). And then I turned on MSNBC and David Shuster was talking about the RFK remarks.

Honestly, I'm not really shocked by the remarks (that doesn't mean I don't find its implications offensive, but I've heard this example used before by her). I don't even know if she MEANT to imply what it seemed, but she just makes some freaking strange historical references to me. Has anyone else noticed that? It's been a theme throughout her campaign. And like Chuck Todd says, it's not like there are a dearth of better examples to draw from. At most, it's a really tone deaf thing to say, especially this week.

52. She also said she couldn't....
understand why, given these facts, Democrats would still want her to quit? Thats paraphrased on my part. Has it by chance ever dawned on her that just perhaps Democrats don't want her in the Oval Office EVEN AS a second choice? Almost like she has lulled herself into believing that the ones that don't want her as a first choice absolutely want her as a second choice? If y'all can't have him I know y'all want me?

Is there any, and I mean ANY, low enough rung she won't stoop to for her self aggrandizing?

In light of what we found out this week the Kennedy remark was horrifying distasteful at best and malicious at worst. I don't think I have ever heard something that cruel come from the mouth of a Democrat in my life. I doubt it'll be the last remark that leaves people aghast as her campaign keeps falling into the obviously bottomless abyss. I think it is beyond her capacity to show compassion unless there is something in it for her, like votes.
