1. I hate to say it but you could be right

I started typing up a post encouraging people not to get hysterical. I was upset about the way Obama's "bitter" comment was blown out of proportion and I didn't want to become guilty of doing the same thing with this. But as I started typing a partial defense I realized that it sounded ridiculous. It could have just been clumsy wording but I think there is a part of her that is hoping something happens to Obama between now and August. I don't think she actually wishes for his death but I think she is hoping he gets caught in some big scandal or something, and this comment really does feel like it could be a Freudian slip.

At the very least, her comment was tacky and highly insensitive. I've gone canvassing in black neighborhoods and met older black women who say they pray for his safety...I've met people who are afraid to vote for him because they are afraid he'll get assassinated. I am not going to accuse her of having a malicious motive, but at the very least, her comments were insensitive. And she was even tackier when she sought to clarify, saying it was on her mind because of Ted's illness.

4. I watched and heard the clip myself and she was not speaking hastily but thoughtfully.

  That may have no bearing on your interpretation of her remarks but there is nothing that smacks of an off-the-cuff comment that we might more commonly associate with a defensible "gaffe".
