HUGE! Cardoza Switch -- First of 40
by MLDB
Fri May 23, 2008 at 11:45:43 AM PDT

Al Giordano Reports:

The Field has learned that Cardoza is the first of a group of at least 40 Clinton delegates, many of them from California, that through talking among themselves came to a joint decision that all of them would vote for Obama at the convention. They have informed Senator Clinton that it’s time to unite around Obama, and that they will be coming out, one or two at a time, and announcing their switch between now and the convention if Senator Clinton doesn’t do the same.

Never fear...the end is near.

As Al points out, this is a net gain of 80 for Obama because every one that Obama gains, Clinton loses.

They will be coming out a few at a time until Clinton concedes.

* MLDB's diary :: ::
*

Update <2008-5-23 15:13:11 by MLDB>: I was interrupted with kid duties as I rushed to get this news out. Some context...Rep. Dennis Cardoza was publicly on the record supporting Clinton. Here is his statement (via an Obama campaign release) explaining his switch:

"This is the most important election of my lifetime. While I continue to greatly respect and admire Senator Clinton and feel she has made history with her campaign, I believe that Senator Obama will inevitably be our party’s nominee for President. He has proven himself to be a thoughtful, knowledgeable, and inspirational leader and will take America in a new direction, which we desperately need.

"The Bush Administration has been a huge disappointment. Mr. McCain, while certainly an American hero, represents more of the same failed Bush policies.

"I am deeply concerned about the contentious primary campaign and controversy surrounding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan – two states Democrats need to win in November. I will not support changing the rules in the fourth quarter of this contest through some convoluted DNC rules committee process. Yet, we must find a resolution to seat the Michigan and Florida delegates so these states’ voters are represented at the Convention. I believe we need to avoid this potentially divisive situation by uniting behind one nominee and bringing the party together immediately. Therefore, I have made the decision to support Senator Obama at the Democratic Convention in my role as a super delegate."

Edited on Fri May-23-08 09:53 PM by Radio_Lady
To Captain James Hook (!):

From Radio Lady, KGW.com:

WHO IS AL GIORDANO????

Al Giordano does not come to mind when I look for talk radio people or even working journalists. This is the second time he has been mentioned in the last two days. (Daily Kos)

Who is he? Where does he work? What are his journalistic credentials?

Here is how Al Giordano described himself in 2003. Is this the same person?

"Al Giordano is an angry, bitter, underemployed, and court-protected online journalist reporting from somewhere in a country called América. Formerly publisher of Narco News and political reporter for the Boston Phoenix, Al spent the early 1990s as a daily AM talk radio host in the United States. Al will grant some email and radio interviews on the themes raised by this essay via al(AT)bigleftoutside.com "

What am I missing?

Thank you for your help.

All it says is that "he got it right" in 2004 and wants to do the same in 2008.

68. Take a chill pill and read up on Al

Al Giordano is a veteran newspaper reporter, radio and television host, and Internet journalism pioneer who founded Narco News in 2000 and its School of Authentic Journalism in 2002. Prior to moving to Latin America, Al was the political reporter for the Boston Phoenix, and has published his work in The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Nation, The Utne Reader, American Journalism Review, New Left Review, and dozens more periodicals.

Named “Hot Muckraker” by Rolling Stone (2001), Al’s pioneering work in Authentic Journalism has also been profiled and praised by The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Guardian, The Christian Science Monitor, Online Journalism Review, Columbia Journalism Review, The Village Voice, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, The Electronic Frontier Foundation, Wired.com, and The Media Channel. Al was the recipient of an Upton Sinclair Freedom of Expression Award in 2004. James Wolcott of Vanity Fair praised his coverage of the 2004 presidential contest noting that Giordano “enjoyed the hottest streak of almost any handicapper.”

Giordano was the first Internet journalist to receive First Amendment protections in a landmark New York Supreme Court case (Banamex vs. Mario Menendez, Al Giordano and Narco News) in 2001, setting an historic precedent for all online journalists and websites.

I rec'd this thread; but personally, I'll stop feeling & expressing outrage once Clinton drops out,

{HELLO SUPER-DELEGATES!!!!] ... and not a moment sooner ...

This was the very last of the last straws for me; and the Democratic party needs to end this NOW.

This kind of assassination-pandering inflammatory filth should not be tolerated from ANY of our candidates,

I worked for RFK in Oregon and California during '68 campiagn... this cuts way to close to the bone for
me.

Now that she's shown her true colors, I would hope that EVERY Democrat worth their salt will not rest
until this lady is OUT OUT OUT of this race, period.

If they were all to switch and for Hillary to still drag this out to the convention (which she WILL no matter what at this point unless Obama can do better than expected in PR/MT/SD) at least it gives the impression that Obama will be gaining ground in the dull period and the media will grow tired of the Hillary story.

25. The one thing that can energize Lamont Williams - I mean Hillary Clinton, is "ganging up" on her
If SDs announce en masse that the race is over and that Hillary has lost she will play that up as "the Boyz" bullying the girl, and we will hear endlessly how Evil Monster Howard Dean and his penis, The Deanis, orchestrated a Grand DNC Conspiracy against Hillary --just as she was on the cusp of Final Victory! (She was robbed I tells ya, ROBBED!)

Then Hillary will instruct her Hillbots to sulk and sabotage and sit out the Nov. elections, so she can run against McCain's VP in 2012.

The SDs for Obama probably appreciate the danger of feeding the Hildebeast with Victimology Treats, and they're waiting for all the primaries to conclude before they fall disproportionately on Obama's side. Meanwhile one or two will dribble out every day between now and then.

32. This may be the most ridiculous thread ever. Let me explain how it works.
A nominee is established by early June when the race is over. The other candidate concedes. All the super delegates vote for the nominee. The losing candidate releases their pledged delegates to vote for the winner.

That is what happens in every election. This one is no different.

Steve

36. No in fact that is not how it happens
usually very early in the process one candidate establishes a dominance and a large lead and a bigger advantage in money. The other candidates always drop out because of money. There are a few exceptions to this but they are very rare in modern American political history.

Obama would take California in November, Times/KTLA poll finds

Clinton would also defeat McCain in the fall, but by a smaller margin. The survey comes less than four months after Obama's loss in the state primary.

Less than four months after losing the California primary, Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain in projected November general election matchups, a new Los Angeles Times/KTLA Poll has found.

Obama, the Illinois senator who has inched close to his party's nomination, would defeat McCain by seven points if the election were held today. New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, whose fortunes have faltered since her Feb. 5 drubbing of Obama in California, would eke out only a three-point victory, the poll found.

67. Hillary is the political version of a suicide bomber
She will destroy anyone or anything to get her way.

72. I'll believe it when I see it
After the 50 black caucus members that didn't materialize, I'm not holding my breath. I'm sure Giordano means well, but I'm not buying this yet. He may be right.

73. Hillary will not concede even if she loses 100 SDs
It's not about the math. She's going all the way. As the media focuses more on Obama vs McBush, she may start to say even more crazy things.

77. Except they aren't in this case
They're simply not blocking Obama's victory of elected delegates.

78. Only if it is for the candidate that has fewer elected delegates, this way they are not deciding,
they are agreeing

79. That's the limit for me and the party, if it happens ....
... she wins the state, and the SDs from those districts she won support someone else? That ain't democracy, and it ain't right. Obama has taken the back-door the whole way, and the media has been forcing him down our throat.

I'm not playing along.

80. I understand that sentiment
but I suspect that the CA primary would turn out a whole lot different if it were held today. There is a whole lot of buyers remorse going on here.

Not saying that it's right but there is nothing in the rules that have a delegate or Superdelegate's endorsement sealed in stone.

If anything positive comes of this, I hope it is a serious re-tooling of the whole primary system.
