what kind of apology would have satisfied Hillary critics?
Edited on Sat May-24-08 07:31 AM by Enrique
how about "I'm sorry that I said something that might influence some nutcase to kill my opponent, Senator Obama."

or "My deepest regrets that I said something that gives people the idea that I want my opponent, Senator Obama, to die so that I win."

here we are talking about presidential candidates being assassinated, and someone expresses the desire to see one of them "gone."

This is appalling to me!

instead of just, "I'm sorry if I offended anyone"- which we all know is the weakest "apology" of them all.

All she is doing at this point is hurting the party, the country and her own career.

Just endorse Obama and exit quietly stage left. No VP, no campaigning, just get the hell out of the primary race and instruct her followers to back the nominee.

does not have the moral conscious to REALIZE that they are devoid of ethics.

HRC has crossed the line into Sociopathology.

There's no "fix" for this other than to "resign her Senate Seat and get out of the Presidential race."

HRC does NOT qualify for a high powered position where millions of lives are at stake for she has NO moral compass. :nuke:

She is a good role model for future, "La Femme Nikitas", who want to master the art of creating racial divide and then knowing
when to yell "sexism" - to justify everything you've done or said previously! She is the PhD in that tactic.

Seriously. There has been too much water under that bridge for any "apology" to even matter.

(Has she even apologized to John Kerry for backstabbing him in 2006? Let's say I'm not holding my breath for any apology from her, for anything, EVER.)

She does everything on purpose. She AND Bill. They're Rovian, take no prisoners campaigners. But, because of Rove, Americans are sick of this approach, and see it for what it is.

Also, she's a lawyer. She knows how to phrase things in an exacting fashion. She didn't have to phrase that as she did. She's said it repeatedly, but not as explicitly, and she finally got her ass called on it.

I wouldn't waste any time expecting it. Don't we all know this personality type? They don't DO apologies because of course they are never wrong.

I understand that your "suggested apology" is theoretical. Hillary wouldn't have used those kind of incriminating words of course, but she COULD have directed her apology, such as it was, to Obama and his supporters, as well as to the Kennedys.

But y'know these people do not believe in apologies.

42. yes
even in her bogus apology, she was still spinning it, directing it to her chosen audience--instead of to the obvious target of her "mistaken" comments. Because that would be taking responsibility for it, acknowledging the implications of it. And so in the best lawyerly style, she sidestepped any real culpability, making it only about bringing up such a painful memory to the Kennedy family. That in itself was another slapdown to Obama & his supporters.

Yes, she is arrogant, cold-blooded, conscienceless--those who profess not to see this are people who tend to be complicit with these type of personalities. We had a good lesson in thse malignant narcissists during the Bu$h fiasco. Thankfully more people recognize it and will not be tempted to forgive and forget. It's a pattern of behavior here, not a mere incidental gaffe.

Has politics made Hillary this way or was she always thus? Analyzing the Hillary Clinton evolution and spectacular crash at the end of the race will be an interesting project for somebody. Her story is unfolding in an archetypal way. Her chickens are coming home to roost. Sad, because she's smart, but smart and twisted.

28. How about...
"I would like to apologize for disclosing that my ONE REMAINING CAMPAIGN STRATEGY is to hope for the death of my opponent. I would like to apologize for being such a black-hearted waste of a human soul that I would, even for one minute, contemplate how I might be the political beneficiary from an act of political terrorism. The statement that I made was beneath contempt, and certainly unbecoming anyone who wishes to lead this great nation. I hereby suspend my campaign for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, and humbly request that those who have supported me in this campaign continue to support the Democratic Party and all of its candidates, especially Sen. Barak Obama, who I am sure will do us all proud as the next President of the United States."

I think most of us would let her off the hook...

individual did or said. Hillary attempted to shift that responsibility to those that perceived her comments as offensive as opposed taking responsibility for what she said.

37. Here's an example
I apologize to Sen. Obama. I should have never made that statement. It was wrong and insensitive to me to imply such a thing. I will never say anything like that again. I have already called Sen. Obama and Sen. Kennedy and offered my sincerest apologies. I pray that they will forgive me and again, I regret this terrible mistake.

That is an apology. An apology is not "I'm sorry if you were offended." You need to take responsibility for the words that came out of your mouth. And you need to say it was wrong. And you need to ask for forgiveness. It's a pretty basic model. Not hard for most folks.

apologize but it is one of those things there really is no way to forget the words and no apology can undo what she did. Probably the final act of her candidacy and certainly did not help any kind of positive legacy for her and Bill. How will they be remembered after this botched up feeble attempt at a run for the presidency.

Sadly, Hillary is her own worst enemy. She jumped the shark -- long term.

I've always respected her. I thought that she was smart enough to be president. Presidents need to be wise while weary.

Hillary was unwise in the weariness of her campaign.

Understandable? -- yes.
Surmountable? -- no

I'm only guessing here but Hillary may have screwed up in such a a big way because she really doesn't want to continue on.

She's been dancing with the bear for a very long time. (When you enter politics -- you dance with the bear. You can't stop dancing before the bear gets tired).

Well, the bear is tired & Hillary is off the hook.

I have supported Bill & and especially Hillary since the beginning; and what I find most disturbing is that such a smart lady would make the kind of statements she has made about Barack Obama since she began to lose ground against him. It hurts us all when one of our own makes statements/comments that we usually hear from Rove & his cohorts.

An apology can still be the right thing to do - "I'm sorry I was such a jerk, I'll go away now." She should do what she can to make amends, but an apology doesn't always make it ok. No more than having mommy kiss it lets you walk on a broken leg.
