Hillary Picks Up Guam and Georgia Delegate

Barack Obama won the Guam caucuses by 7 votes. Pilar Lujan won the caucuses for chair of Guam's Democratic party. She had been uncommitted.

Friday, she announced she is supporting Hillary. That means Guam's delegates are split 4-4. There is one superdelegate left, Guam Senator Ben Pangelinan , who hasn't yet declared. http://www.kuam.com/news/28008.aspx

Obama's Guam campaign complained about Lujan's endorsement, saying she had promised to go with the popular vote and while 7 votes isn't much, she still should have honored it. Thay asked her to reconsider. http://www.kuam.com/news/28034.aspx

I thought Obama's camp thought the popular vote didn't matter. They didn't complain when John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and several others endorsed him despite the preferences of the majority of their states' voters for Hillary.

In endorsing Hillary, Lujan said:

After taking a close look at the candidates in this race, I was more impressed by Senator Clinton's ability to meet the challenges of the presidency: end the war, reinvigorate the economy, and provide universal healthcare."

She also stated of Clinton, "When she becomes the first woman president, she will think of the people of Guam and their aspirations."

Lujan also appreciated the personal touch Hillary extended to her in two phone calls. She says Hillary will do more for Guam as President.http://www.guampdn.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080524/NEWS01/805240307/1002

Hillary also got the vote of Georgia add-on delegate Verna Cleveland.

Obama picked up 4 delegates Saturday, two from Alaska and 1 from Wyoming and Georgia.

national campaign complained. Why should they? Hilly is irrelevant. She's done. Now it's just about how she gets out retaining even a shred of dignity.

31. yes, it's just in my mind.
and in the minds of every political analyst and pundit and all those betting on who'll be the nominee. She's not really prohibitively behind in delegates. He's not really only 50 delegates from the number needed to clinch it. She's not really deeply in debt. SDs aren't really leaving her and supporting Obama. There aren't really only 3 contests left. The RBC will give Hillypoo all the Florida delegates and Obama none. They'll give her all the MI delegates and Obama none. The RBC won't punish MI or FL in any form.

102. Tide is turning
Legislators and news media are out of touch with voters, but apparently some are beginning to figure it out.

The inevitability of Obama's nomination being pushed so heavily in the news media isn't resonating with average voters, as measured by the polls.

Issues are central to this election, not campaign spin.

"Buyers' Remorse: How Rank & File Democrats Rejected Obama Once He Was Declared The "Inevitable" Nominee"
In nearly every demographic category since February 19, Clinton’s percentage of the vote has risen, while Obama’s has fallen. This includes Obama’s supposed “strong” demographic categories such as voters with college degrees post-graduate degrees and voters whose income is above the national median. And Clinton beat Obama in the primaries in March, April and May in most of the major categories.

Superdelegates Turned Down $1 Million Offer From Clinton Donor

May 19, 2008 02:50 PM

One of Sen. Hillary Clinton's top financial supporters offered $1 million to the Young Democrats of America during a phone conversation in which he also pressed for the organization's two uncommitted superdelegates to endorse the New York Democrat, a high-ranking official with YDA told The Huffington Post.

Haim Saban, the billionaire entertainment magnate and longtime Clinton supporter, denied the allegation. But four independent sources said that just before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, Saban called YDA President David Hardt and offered what was perceived as a lucrative proposal: $1 million would be made available for the group if Hardt and the organization's other uncommitted superdelegate backed Clinton. . . .

When asked whether the nomination fight would go all the way to the convention, Clinton replied, “It depends on what happens between now and then. It’s been really funny that when when all she asked was to let all the votes be counted, the response from the other side was to pressure as many superdelegates as possible, in districts mostly that she carried, to come out against her.”

The "Guam Campaign Director" for Obama complained NOT Obama.
There is a big difference. Obama can not control comments made by every single campaign worker, just like he can not control comments by people like Rev Wright etc...

But good for Hillary, and I congratulate her on her victory.

30. then the question is
did they promise they would back the winner of the state, as Tenorio stated "At the time of her candidacy she did say her vote would reflect the majority of the Democrats that participated in the caucus"

That was her own views/words, the Obama campaign won the caucus admittedly with only 7 votes, she tossed her vote to Hillary which is contrary what she had earlier stated. I don't see the popular vote having any real influence here, its simply a case of one person pointing out what another person claimed she would do

40. Inaccuracies
1-Obama leads on the electoral college map over McCain now.

2-The head of the Guam Obama campaign made those statements and I'm sure he had a vested interest in the process. He's had discussions with that SD and knows her personally. He reacted to her not keeping her word. It also has nothing to do with Barack Obama.

3-This primary is almost over and will be done after June 3rd. Will you be supporting the Democratic nominee come November?

43. OK, then say "Obama SURROGATE complains" -- that's not TOO hard, is it? ...
After all, when Bill Clinton tries to compare Hillary favorably to Nelson Mandela, I don't see any "Obamatons" (of which I suppose I would count as one) claiming "HILLARY VAUNTS SELF RELATIVE TO MANDELA". Saying "surrogate" is DIFFERENT, VERY different, from saying "Obama". Similarly, when Andrew "el Putz" Cuomo made his totally innocent( :eyes: ) "shuck and jive" remark, did any "Obamatons" say that HILLARY said it? NO.

And by the way, it is the JOB of campaign managers to fight over and for every delegate. That delegate wouldn't mean CRAP to Obama, but it means a LOT to that campaign manager on Guam. It is like the difference between getting an "A" and a "B", or between an "Excellent" rating and a "HMNieh" evaluation in one's job. This isn't rocket science....

Now, as for popular vote totals: (1) Ted Kennedy and John Kerry (didn't their endorsements PRECEDE the Massachusetts primary? details) NEVER promised or even suggested that they would, unilaterally, support whoever got the most votes in MA. (2) If someone advocates socialism, do you take away all their wealth selectively (without necessarily providing the various benefits of real socialism) while leaving all the capitalists with their money? When you look to a change in the way a game is played, that's a change for EVERYBODY, not merely selectively enforced against you. (3) Obviously, the popular vote total, even by a small margin, as in NM, is supposed to be honored, within the rules of the game. Admittedly, it is true that counts of the votes in the caucuses AND the primaries (though not, eg, counting the votes for Hillary where the primary was nixed by the national party, Obama dutifully withdrew his name but Hillary didn't, and now you want ONLY her votes to count, eg -- see #2) show Obama with the most overall votes (and obviously you don't skip caucus states like WA, IA, and ME just because final individual vote tallies, which the caucus system did not require, weren't released -- I mean you don't if you're being honest). However, the notion of equating a vote in a caucus and votes in primaries to total them up (hence much more heavily weighting primaries), then skipping the votes from certain caucuses for the reasons stated above, then adding one-sidedly the votes from other pre-nullified contests is, well, pretty obvious bullshit. Why defend EVERY twist and turn, no matter how dishonest or inexcusable, in the HRC campaign.

IF indeed polls were showing, with ANY kind of consistency, that Hillary ran more strongly against McCain than Obama, that would indeed be an argument, including an argument to make to voters going to the polls. However, the polls are -- SURPRISE!!!! -- cherry picked. RealClearPolitics, which being basically Republican RW isn't especially biased towards Obama (now let's hear those claims to the contrary), collects all the polls into a national rolling average. Each day they re-calculate the average based upon the latest stats from ALL reputed polls that they can get their hands on. Obama, although only by a few percent, has been running fairly consistently, and virtually always in recent weeks, more strongly against McCain than Hillary in national match-ups.

As for the claim that this or that state is one Hillary would carry, or win with a wider margin, or lose with a significantly smaller margin, than Obama, there are, of course, OTHER states, (eg Virginia, Colorado, and some others) where Obama polls more strongly. The question of "map" not "math" depends on just WHOSE maps you are looking at (see discussion of whose votes to count, above, etc). These ways of trying to put forward any kind of claim, no matter how specious, is, in my arrogant opinion, though VERY widespread in our culture and surely not absent from fellow Obama supporters (many of whom I called out recently for gloating over or being snarky about Hillary's latest RFK gaffe), seems to be characteristic of HRC's campaign, and her mass supporters, to a QUALITATIVELY higher degree than among Obama's -- yet another factor that points in the direction of Obama being the stronger CANDIDATE, as well as prospective president.

Incidentally, I am one of those Obama supporters who feels strongly that Hillary as VP (which is clearly the point of her staying in the race, and anything else she might muscle, even WITHOUT REALLY having the most votes, delegates, or what-have-you) would be a DRAG on the Obama ticket. I DO STRONGLY think Obama should pick a woman (in part for realpolitik as well as principled reasons -- to more effectively unite the party, and energize many otherwise disappointed women), but it should NOT be Hillary, and in my arrogant opinion, it should be someone who NEVER supported the Iraq War Resolution (IWR). I like Barbara Boxer, but she isn't mentioned much, as discussions all seem to point as far to the right as possible in terms of VP pick. There's also Sebelius, Napolitano, McCaskill, and (though not often mentioned) Stabenow.
That's really the question of the day -- WHO SHOULD and WHO WILL Obama select as VP? Will Hillary muscle her way into the #2 spot, even while emitting grotesque gaffes like the RFK thing?

"Guam Obama camp disappointed at Pilar Lujan's endorsement "

"Guam campaign director for Obama for America Josh Tenorio is none too pleased with a recent announcement made by Democratic Party of Guam chair and superdelegate Pilar Lujan. As reported she has recently endorsed Hillary Clinton as her choice for the Democratic presidential nominee. Said Tenorio, "At the time of her candidacy she did say her vote would reflect the majority of the Democrats that participated in the caucus, and although Obama only won by 7 votes, we do have a majority and so we are very disappointed and hope that she will reconsider."

36. "she had promised to go with the popular vote". did kerry and teddy promise the same thing?
and you expect everyone in the obama camp to NOT ask her to reconsider or remind her of her earlier promise?

i'm sure the clinton campaign never once spoke to people like kerry, teddy, or any of the others, trying to pursuade them to reverse their decisions?

it's how the game is played. hillary can enjoy her one victory and obama can work to undo it, while they also look to all the others and fight to win more sd's.

NOTHING IN THE ARTICLE THAT SAYS THEY COMPLAINED. It says "Guam Obama camp disappointed at Pilar Lujan's endorsement"

Did you think putting the word "complained" sounded better than "disappointed"?

"Guam campaign director for Obama for America Josh Tenorio is none too pleased with a recent announcement made by Democratic Party of Guam chair and superdelegate Pilar Lujan. On the national level, currently Barack Obama is leading Clinton by a count of 1,968.5 delegates to 1,783.5, according to MSNBC.com."

44. Another Obama gimmick... a $3 Trillion dollar virtual shopping spree..
an Obama e-mail sent to me by a friend:

"Finally, our http://3trillion.org/">$3 trillion virtual shopping spree has caught fire! It has drawn 1.4 million shoppers and received praise from all over the Internet. This fun online game where you try to spend $3 trillion (what the Bush administration has spent on the war) has also attracted celebrity shoppers like John Cusack, Laurie David, Gloria Steinem, Phil Donahue, and even (your name here)."

"But while 1.4 million is a tremendous number, our ultimate goal is to get 3 trillion shoppers! John Cusack, star of the film War, Inc. which opens tonight in LA and NY, is assisting us in that endeavor with this contest:"

"Whoever can get the most people to fill out a shopping cart by emailing their cart or sending a gift certificate, will receive a real gift certificate for free movie tickets to War, Inc. (Contest ends Memorial Day at midnight ET)"

Of course, you realize this newest "gimmick" is a strategy for more e-mail addresses to enlarge Obama's donor list and get the Vote out for Obama and selling the list for more money when this is over, which will HELP YOU OUT getting MORE SPAM. He'll probably offer a drawing of a trip for a family of 4 to Disneyland on election day! Obama has become the WORLD's BIGGEST LOBBYIST... As for Obama, Lobbing his opponents and Lobbying prospective voters are his greatest strengths.. Can he give the names of past presidents in the order they were elected? I doubt it. Can he tell you the capital of each and every state? I doubt that too. Can he draw a map of the US naming all the states? That would be a BIG surprise.

Besides being the least informed Presidential Candidate in this race on US History, Domestic and Foreign policy. How troubling is it to have been second only to Bush as the least informed president elected or not... than Dan Quayle ?

52. I don't see a complaint by Obama. Asking someone to reconsider is appropriate. Not a complaint.
I don't recall Obama ever saying the popular vote didn't matter, either. Do you just make this stuff up? Is this the caliber of ethics of the Clinton camp and supporters? To just make stuff up?

As for the endorsements of Kerry & Kennedy....they endorsed BEFORE the primary of MA. Clinton could have asked them to reconsider their endorsement, after the MA primary. Maybe she did. Don't know. But asking for reconsideration is not complaining.

Saying, "The media is picking on me because it's sexist" is complaining.

See the difference? Sure you do. Whiners don't elected President.

95. they chided him for breaking a promise
something you, as a Hillary supporter, probably have trouble understanding. But she can have guam. She wins some, just not enough.

See you at the convention. We will expect your support.

101. Health care reform is Obama's Achilles heel
and Clinton's strength. Legislators hoping to pick up a few bucks for their re-election campaigns by signing up with Obama while ignoring health care reform will pay a heavy price with voters in their districts.

I can't count the number of people I've talked to in the last month who were never politically active before, but are now calling their legislators about the cost of health care. Woe to any elected official who ignores it.

104. Did Kerry or Kennedy pledge before to go with their state's vote?
Or did they pledge to remain independent?

Your point is not valid unless Kerry and Kennedy had pledged to go with the majority, then reneged on that promise.

On a related manner, how can Florida or Michgan delegates be seated when the elections were neither fair nor representative?

105. Nice try
Obama Didn't say anything. His Guam Campaign director gave the following statement.

"At the time of her candidacy she did say her vote would reflect the majority of the Democrats that participated in the caucus, and although Obama only won by 7 votes, we do have a majority and so we are very disappointed and hope that she will reconsider."

In otherwords, their hope for her vote rested on the statements of the particular super delegate. Not some arbitrary call for her to honor the guam popular vote, but rather out of the expectation that she would follow her own words with her actions.

What this actually says to me is that Hillary was more favored to win Guam than I had realised, and that Obama's upset there is a bigger deal than I had realized. I don't believe for a second that she only was able to "take a close look at the candidates" after the vote had been made. This woman obviously planned to endorse Hillary, and gave rationale that she thought would latter support that endorsement. And somehow Obama overcame that expectation and won anyway.
