Hillary's gaffe presents an enormous opportunity for people who want to divide our party.
They're taking it.

Here, there, and everywhere.

There is a lot of sincere regret and even anger among Democrats. Which makes for an excellent opportunity for some people to sink to the level of crying, from the back of the crowd, "Burn her! She is a witch!" I've seen too much of it to not say anything.

Just because I support Barack Obama and look forward with deeply heartfelt emotion to his presidency and the repair of American democracy, that doesn't mean that I'm blind to the destructive impulses that seek to fan the flames of anger and division.

Some of it is from within our ranks, and some from without.

None of it helps to promote the agenda of President Obama.

Enough.

30. We can think
I saw the whole thing "context" and all before it made any cable shows and I was so horrified it took my breath away. I don't get MSNBC at all and didn't see any coverage there until it was up on the web. I don't need Gregory or Olbermann or anyone else to tell me what to think. I heard it, I knew that the historical references didn't make any sense in terms of the question about party unity. The only thing left to believe was that a gratuitous reference to assassination when she's in a race with a man who is at extra risk for same.

People fault her for not saying
"I didn't mean that Obama should be assassinated."

Anyone who thinks that a politician could, or should, formulate the kind of statement that would give that meme even further momentum is being disingenuous, or naive.

She could have said "I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have cited that example. It was wrong. " That's all she needs to say. Not "I regret if it was taken...not my intent..."

In just **2 DAYS** we've seen the progression from Clinton's campaign strategy being Obama's death to journalists publically calling for his death.

We've got **6 MONTHS** to go.

Talk about not being sure who's helping who.

42. I'm thinking of people who don't want either Obama OR Clinton.
People invested in keeping tempers as high as possible for as long as possible.

If the GOP is once again successful at fostering a split in our party, we're doomed, but that's going to take a lot of work because Obama is such a superior candidate to McCain.

14. those forces of division you refer to
have always been with us. Nothing new at this point. HRC has helped deepen those divisions but they were there already.

Some reading this will take your vow of silence.

Some will continue to speak out about the tenor and implications of the way HRC has run her campaign.

It's nearly impossible to control that (other than cautioning people about unacceptable language).

It won't slow down until a nominee is officially named, the sooner the better.

Then let the peacemaking begin.

We don't need them, we don't owe them anything, they're contributing nothing, they need to go. PERIOD. They do not need to be defended, humored, understood, or appealed to.

THEY ARE NOW WORKING FOR THE BUSH-CHENEY-MCCAIN-RIGHT WING AND THEY ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS. Please try to understand that.

27. Yes, it's clearly an issue
and I think Obama's campaign is well aware of it. The fact that it IS an issue is what I'm talking about however. The Clintons are making trouble by ginning up hatred and distrust of the nominee. It should NEVER have gotten to this idiotic point but they're divisive snakes and now we're in another pickle. I'll be SO glad to see those two crooks gone forever.

I know there are plenty of people like you who understand that my main concern in the OP is that some of the impetus for fanning the antipathy between the backers of Obama and Clinton is coming from outside the party. As for those who want to escalate the conflict who are actually Democrats, all we can do is to engage sincerely, and hope it makes a difference.
