Summary: Hillary makes reckless comment, gets criticized, blames Obama
All seem to agree Hillary's comment was a gaffe, ill-advised, insensitive and reckless.

Some want to believe that it was not calculated by framing it as a comment about primary timing not assassination.

Still, if her comment was ill-advised, insensitive and reckless, why make it? Is her judgment that off?

Given the repeated "anything can happen" statements, such as this horrible one by McAuliffe, are those just coincidences? Why the attempts to portray Hillary's harshest critics as going overboard?

Video: Terry McAuliffe on Fox News Sunday

Hillary's response, blame:

Having made a gaffe -- not in her heart, but in her verbal formulation -- she embeds a political calculation in the way she frames and phrases her apology, avoiding the guy whose life might be put at risk. And then she uses it in the rest of the piece to turn her own mistake into an advertisement:

I'm historic! I'm a great leader! I wasn't brought up to be a quitter!

Anything but a straightforward, simple apology.

1. No, it was not a gaffe. It was repeated over and over and over.

3. I don't think the outcry is a gaffe either.
The whole thing is getting scarier by the day. Is Hillary Rosemary's baby or what?

5. Rosemary's Baby
was a scary demon-seed movie from the seventies, kind of like the Exorcist only scarier. I don't remember too much about it except that it had Mia Farrow in and it was terrifying.

Projection.
It's what we've been so used to seeing from Rove et al.

A tactic lifted directly from the GOP. Quite disturbing.

11. Being a "victim" means never having to say you're sorry...
Unfortunately, it also means you'd probably be a shitty President.

Forgive, but NEVER forget! For the good of the Democratic Party, the Nation, the entire World, Hillary must go! And NOW, not in 2012!

17. Here's what I think
Being that she has made this comparison multiple times before, she obviously thought about it. My guess is, she got with her consultants and decided to use historical incidents of June primaries as illustrative examples, in order to further her arguments. When making such a case, it is always wise to use more than one example, especially when that one example is one's own husband. She and her team possibly mulled it over and chose RFK's 1968 run because it would pluck the heartstrings of those listening. It would also conflate Bill Clinton with the Kennedy legacy. Callous? Calculating? That's marketing. That's politics.

My thinking is that, because she and her advisors were so single-minded, the possibility that such a comparison would cause anguish would be minimal to the overall effect of the statement.

They thought wrong.
