In a Spirit of Bipartisanship DU Attacks Fellow Dems to Distract from John McCain's Health Issues
Wow! Are we a compassionate party or what? Never let it be said that we kick an old and medically unfit opposition candidate when he is down. On Friday, Sen. John McCain dumped over 1000 pages of medical records on the press. News organizations have been busy combing through them for tidbits about the presumptive Republican nominee's health (or lack thereof). But have the fine folks at Democratic Underground focused their attention on the many medical problems which make him the last person we want to have at the switchboard when the 3am call comes in?

Hell no! In a spirit of bipartisan fairness that should qualify us for a Nobel Peace Prize, we have spent the weekend sliming, mauling, name calling, shredding and cannibalizing our own two candidates, all so that we would not have to talk about

1. the fact that McCain had an invasive melanoma removed from his temple in 2000, even though back then we were told it was noninvasive. And according the New York Times there were actually two melanomas on his temple, raising the specter that one was a metastasis via lymphatic spread from the first. If you add in the fact that melanoma on the face and scalp already has a worse prognosis this increased the chance of a recurrence for the Senator when the disease was diagnosed in 2000 and would have possibly prompted doctors to suggest treatment for stage III disease which would include chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

In the years since 2000, doctors had already guessed that McCain's temple melanoma was more invasive than he let on at the time, due to the type of surgical procedure he had. You would not ordinarily biopsy all those lymph nodes for a very shallow tumor. So, having it confirmed to be an invasive melanoma is no real surprise. The presence of two tumors is surprising. And knowing that an effort was made to confound the public makes you wonder, what else did the Senator fail to mention in 2000? At that time he denied getting any chemotherapy or radiation therapy. And there were not supposed to have been any complications from the surgery. However, anyone can see he has had memory and speech problems since then. An intraoperative left side stroke could have caused his present neurological symptoms as could radiation therapy to the left side of the head. Just speculating, but you have to speculate when you know that the story you heard the first time was not the whole story. There is still at least a 10% chance of a (fatal) recurrence of the 2000 melanoma even if the public now has all the facts.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/24/us/politics/24mccain.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&oref=slogin

2. the fact that McCain takes Ambien to sleep. You know those 3 am ads? How can a president be there at 3 am for a national emergency if he is knocked out from a sleeping pill? Who is going to take his calls if he is too wired to sleep at night without sleep aids? His vice president? That makes his VP choice very important. And what if he is one of those people who is able to act like they are awake on Ambien when they are really asleep? Do we want our president saying "Yes" to the question "Should we launch the missiles?" when he thinks that you just asked "Do you want some warm milk?"
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Politics/story?id=4919842&page=1

3. the fact that his cholesterol has been 226, LDL 139 HDL 35, his father died of a stroke at 70, his systolic blood pressure was elevated and he is a former smoker. Here is a list of stroke risk factors. His age is also a risk factor for stroke. As mentioned above, if he has not had left head radiation therapy, then his speech and memory difficulties are suggestive of a left brain ischemic injury or a previous stroke. Multiple small infarcts of the brain is a leading cause of dementia. Do we want another second term Reagan presidency?
http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4716
http://www.stroke.org/site/DocServer/scorecardQ.pdf?docID=601

All of this means that John McCain might become impaired while still commander in chief since brain metastases from melanoma and micro-strokes could interfere with his mental function before they became apparent to his physicians. This makes his much touted "experience" immaterial. There is a reason that pilots must pass strict flight physicals before they fly. Every decision they make in the air is of the utmost importance for their own sake and for the safety of those who depend upon them. John McCain may have been a hero as a young man, but he is far from being that same young man.

So, I have to hand it to Democratic Underground and the liberal bloggosphere for ignoring the issue which neither of the Democratic candidates can afford to be the first to broach. Maybe if we all keep attacking each other and tearing up the Democratic Party from within, the McCain friendly press will declare him healthier than Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton put together, and the American public will end up believing it.

than hurt my wrist from all of the scrolling.

39. True, but I'm sure that Hillary's supporters would LOVE us to...
stop focusing on her threat of assassination of Obama.

My goal right now is getting Hillary out of his primary, then getting Obama elected, then getting Hillary out of our political system in the U.S. for good.

There are plenty of Clinton scandals, some of them not addressed during Bill's administration.

I think right now that Hillary Clinton is a bigger, and more immediate, threat to America than McCain. We must get her out of the primary, and then do what we need to do after.

Due to the fact that many here think the primary should have been over after the first one or two states voted, I have come to the conclusion that we should just allow the DNC to choose the candidate for us and not bother to have a primary.

19. Is John McCain a "front" for the far right?
I know many who think so.

In other words..... he has been specifically chosen to pick off Hillary's voters, even tho they know damned well he may not even make it through one term. I will be honest. Alas, I am considering voting for him. And that is why this is being brought to my attention... again and again.

I'm gonna tell ya... no amount of McCain slamming will convince me that he is one of the "bad guys." I know he was courted by Dems, just four years ago... to run with John Kerry. I also know what his voting record looks like. He is one to uphold the constitution. He has voted for judges of every stripe. He is not for overturning Roe v. Wade. I know all of these things.

And, yet... there is this gnawing fear.... about who will take over if/when he is not able to carry out his duties. His choice of VP cannot be good. Nobody he is looking at (save Bloomberg) is even anywheres near the independent thinker he is.

Just my .02 worth. John is going for Hillary's defectees. He has been for MONTHS now. And I have been saying that. Watching him very closely.... he is on target to obtain much support from Blue Collar workers and from Latinos. No question about it! From women? Maybe that too.

The scary part will be who he chooses as a running mate. Because MOST of the electorate will not pay a whole lot of attention to that. Wall Street will, and some evangelicals. But blue collar and Hispanic America may not. Many swing states rely on those constituancies.... as has been demonstrated in our primary season.

You are totally on target here, McCamy. Because this is the ONE issue that will give many moderates (myself included) pause, as they consider jumping ship to vote for Mr. McCain. It's a real shame that the Dem party doesn't think it's an issue. They are too busy taking Hillary down to watch. Reveling in their coup. In fact, I've been slammed many times... on this board and other places ... for even *mentioning* that Hillary's Latinos like Mr. McCain's Immigration Reform bill.

But.... know what? I'm sure McCain's team is watching us Dem. moderates. And I could give you a long list of how I know this .... beginning with a Green Energy policy that is almost a copy of Ms. Clinton's.

McCain is not a moderate, in fact he is more of a neocon than Bush.
He has ties with PNAC (the neocon thinktank which has disintegrated)
going back years, he surrounds himself with neocon advisors. He was
instrumental in the lead up to invading Iraq.
Regarding McCain's 100 year quote:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/01/04/mccain-100-years
McCain singing "bomb bomb bomb ... bomb bomb Iran":

Go to Project Vote Smart, compare his record to Clinton's and Obama's.

http://www.votesmart.org/npat.php?can_id=S0061103

His record is poor on many issues, including labor, the environment,
and women's issues. It's far below Clintons' and Obama's.

Hillary Clinton said herself that there is a far greater difference
on the issues between her and McCain than between her and Obama.
Didn't you hear her say that?

NARAL and Planned Parenthood give him a 0 percent rating

52. McCain 24% lifetime score from League of Conservation Voters
Sen. McCain's environmental record questionable
http://www.aboutmyplanet.com/environment/mccains-environmental
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), a US organization dedicated to turning environmental values into public policy, released their environmental scorecard for 2007 this month. The scorecard gives US senators a percentage rating based on their voting record on environmental issues, and while the overall numbers for Congress were up, Senator McCain scored zero.

The likely Republican presidential candidate received this score due to missing all 15 votes scored, including the key vote on repealing tax giveaways to big oil – a measure that failed by only one vote. McCain's lifetime score, according to LCV, is only 24 percent.

Both Senator Hilary Clinton and Senator Barak Obama’s scores also suffered due to the occupational hazard of absenteeism, as both missed four votes each in 2007. Clinton’s score in 2007 was 73 percent (87 percent lifetime); Obama’s was 67 percent (86 percent lifetime).

That's the one the GOP will be voting for. It doesn't matter if McCain gets a "clean bill of health." He is obviously not healthy. Whether he's got one foot in the dementia zone or one foot in the grave, doesn't matter. Except for the diehard McCain supporters, the GOP voters will set their hopes on the VP taking over in a couple of years.

43. Neither Obama nor Clinton should be the first to bring up these issues. Voters should.
Edited on Mon May-26-08 02:19 PM by McCamy Taylor
That means it is our job. If Obama and Clinton do it, it sounds like it is just politics. All of the facts I posted above are legitimate medical concerns that make McCain's vice presidential pick much more important than he is.

No wonder Huckabee wants to be his running mate. Do we want the first evangelical president?

Or say he picks Jeb Bush? Do we want eight more years of Bush rule, except this time with a smarter Bush?

He could pick a right wing Republican "to shore up the base"---except that the real plan would be that John McCain would be the figurehead like Reagan was the figurehead to get Poppy elected in 1980 so that Bush I could start will all his Iran Contra foreign policy craziness. David Rockefeller backed Reagan-Bush in 1980 and was the bag man for the Voted for Hostages deal. I am betting that he chose their ticket because he knew that their team would be very, very good for oil. Do we want big oil to choose the next president again ?

McCain could be the next right wing coup.

64. Hillary's too busy invoking assassination of her opponent
funny she doesn't consider John McCain to be the opponent.

35. Hillary screws up..blames Obama
Anybody else sensing a pattern here? It would be much easier to spend time attacking McCain if a certain candidate with ABSOLUTELY ZERO CHANCE OF WINNING would drop out of the race.

But instead, we have to spend time dealing with her bullshit.

36. If the Obama minions would just STFU
maybe we can all get past this. I don't believe they are the least bit capable of STFU.

and that in itelf is a shame. Obama fans, you've won; now why do you want to injure your own choice with the constant backbiting against our other DEMOCRATIC candidate? This is a negative approach which will not strengthen the party or Obama's chances in the general election. Why can you NOT see that? My advice is to start backing off NOW; it cannot be sooner and it may soon be too late to be ever.

49. Democrats have to be united--
Mc* will be wired for sound and function and drugged long enough to get elected, and his 2nd will run things-and the whole country would be ill. It is so hard to even think of this possibility. He would have to steal the election-wait we still have electronic voting machines.
I keep thinking that the country would rebel if he stole the election.

If I have learned anything the last 8 years, it has been to NEVER underestimate the right, despite all appearances.

53. R&K. The entire weekend on this board was wasted on Hillary's stupid gaffe, and insipid "analyses"
of how a now-irrelevant candidate supposedly polls better than the Democratic nominee.

Basically no time was spent discussing McCain's health, or anything else regarding McCain.

54. and Ferraro has multiple myeloma
such a nice compassionate bunch the Obama supporters are. One could almost say they deserve to lsoe their health care for supporting such a terrible candidate, but even I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

65. When Hillary gets out and stops attacking the Democratic Nominee, then we can focus on McCain
Until then she is public enemy #1 just because of the damage she is attempting to do to our party's chances in November.
