Can you picture an Obama-Hagel ticket?
BY JOSEPH MORTON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON — The race for the Democratic presidential nomination isn't over yet, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating about whom front-runner Barack Obama might choose for a running mate.

The list of potential partners is long. It starts with Obama's lingering rival for the nomination, Hillary Clinton, and includes a few other heavyweights in the Democratic Party.

One long shot said to be on the list is Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.

Of course, there's one problem with that idea: Hagel is a Republican and might not even be eligible under Democratic Party guidelines for the national ticket.

The party's guidelines dictate that the requirements for vice president follow those used for the nominee.

The presidential nominee must be "a bona fide Democrat whose record of public service, accomplishment, public writings and/or public statements affirmatively demonstrates that he or she is faithful to the interests, welfare and success of the Democratic Party of the United States and will participate in the convention in good faith."

FULL story at link.

11. Iraq War, economy, Bush...
We don't need Hagel on the ticket to win this election. Bush has just about won it for us by himself.

18. I would agree 100% if Republican nominee was not McCain. For some reason
McCain has people fooled into thinking that he is a maverick. He voted for things Bush wanted 95% of the time but he is a maverick. Then the media loves the war hero. I still think Obama will probably win but it would be a landslide with any other Republican.

38. He'll win with Hagel
but that doesn't make it the best choice, especially since he can win with many other V.P. choices.

40. Haha. You are so wrong. He will not only lose Hillary voters
who have stated they will vote for him but current Obama supporters too. He will not make that up with Republicans or Independents. It's a losing ticket.

31. Not my opinion

The article is on the front page here today. Except for the war, Hagel hasn't even been close to a moderate. I'll take Obama's pick.

35. I noted that you didn't include your opinion, which is why I asked.
The only reason I'm not sorry to see Hagel go, is his likely replacement. Kleeb is so much better than either Hagel or Johanns.

They debate next week. Five months to go, this could be fun.

16. There's no way that would happen
Obama has built up to much support, he's not foolish enough to throw it all away by putting Hagel on the ticket. It would be unacceptable for an anti-choice Republican to be on the ticket.

Because he's VP and direct in line to the Presidency if Obama would have any health problems or ethical issues. Maybe a cabinet position but not VP.

21. UMMM, NO and besides that Hagel ISN'T a Democrat
The party's guidelines dictate that the requirements for vice president follow those used for the nominee.

I don't think Hagel dictates those guidelines.

26. I am coming around to the idea of Sherrod Brown (OH)
as Obama's VP choice.

<snip>

The Case for Brown:

Brown would be close to an absolute dream pick for Obama. He would guarantee that the ticket carries Ohio, and has a long record of opposing free trade, fighting for health care, and knows how to win the support of working and middle-class families.

Brown’s only shortcomings is his lack of military service and the fact that he is Lutheran rather than Catholic; Obama has shown particular weakness among white Catholic voters. Brown may also be reluctant to take the vice-presidential slot for fear of jeopardizing the job of his wife, Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist at the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

But an Obama-Brown ticket would galvanize the Democratic base. This would not only represent the party’s strongest most progressive and pro-labor ticket since FDR, but Brown’s selection would help frame the fall campaign around kitchen table economic issues—the focus that John McCain and the Republican Party fears most in the wake of the worsening recession.

Putting a Republican on the ticket, even a quasi-socially liberal one like Hagel, would give me pause and concern.

27. I like the idea
It seems to me that Chuck Hagel is becoming something of an Earl Warren Republican. Also I think they would kick ass together -- Obama/Hagel Vs. McCain/Lieberman that is a gigantic one-sided match. I'm all for it.

28. no. unless you want the Greens or Nader to get a LOT of votes...
I would have trouble voting for a ticket with a Repub on it. I can handle a Repub in the Cabinet, but not as VP. Anyone who maintains party affiliation with the war-mongering, Constitution-destroying Bushies does NOT belong anywhere near the WH.

36. It's just that it seems unlikely that Hagel would get the veep nom if
so many outstanding choices within the party are available, which they are.

As Bill Clinton chose a Republican -- Cohen of Maine -- to be Defense Sec, Hagel might play some sort of similar role in an Obama administration, but for electoral punch, I think there are better choices.

I will give Hagel credit where its due -- on the Iraq issue -- but the accumulative total of the rest of his voting record is pretty far Right.

Omaha Steve, I enjoyed the Coppola post yesterday. Thanks for that.
