Politico: Obama is Fidel Castro's preferred candidate
Good!

Although Fidel criticized some of Obama's positions on the embargo, Castro showed that Obama is his favorite candidate.

Politico reports:

Fidel Castro has a fascinating op-ed in the state-run Cuban paper Granma, attacking Obama's recent Cuba speech with a slight note of regret that such a "progressive" candidate has taken such a hard-line stance.

Castro charged that "Presidential candidate Obama’s speech may be formulated as follows: hunger for the nation, remittances as charitable hand-outs and visits to Cuba as propaganda for consumerism and the unsustainable way of life behind it."

But he also made clear that Obama is his preferred candidate: He's "doubtless, from the social and human points of view, the most progressive candidate to the U.S. presidency."

6. Fidel rocks, particularly when he warned on the famine brought about biofuels.
The old farts from CANF won't deal with Cuba, preferring instead to dream on imposing a GOP-style fundie rule on Cuba after Fidel dies. Talking about delusional!

25. Ben Smith
http://www.politico.com/reporters/BenSmith.html

Ben Smith writes a blog about the candidates for the 2008 Democratic nomination for Politico. He grew up on New York's Upper West Side when President Reagan was regularly depicted as Satan in that section of the city, and now lives with his wife and two children in Brooklyn. He followed a straight line from childhood to Politico, charting a course that included a summa cum laude degree in linguistics from Yale College; a summer covering cops at the Indianapolis Star; and two years living in Riga, Latvia as a correspondent for the European edition of the Wall Street Journal.

More recently, he covered New York's City Hall for the New York Sun and politics for the New York Observer. In 2006, he was a political columnist for the New York Daily News and in 2005 and 2006 started three of New York City's leading political blogs, The Politicker, The Daily Politics, and Room Eight, for which he still writes occasionally about the New York scene.

Smith finds blogging a rewardingly immediate way to talk to sophisticated readers, and to be informed and corrected by people who know more than he does. (Favorite words of constructive criticism from readers include: "Dweebish little neo-con" and "mealy-mouth foam-rubber cripplespeak.") He learned to blog from Andrew Sullivan's andrewsullivan.com and Josh Marshall's TalkingPointsMemo.

---

for what it's worth, that's what his bio says for his blog on politico. fwiw, the reporters for the WSJ are generally far, far superior to their editorial staff, which is largely made up of foaming-at-the-mouth John Birchers in Brooks Bros. suits. I wouldn't imagine he's exactly a flaming liberal, but he doesn't seem like a Bircher, either. Don't know about his suits.

just wondering since that's sort of typical behavior for someone who's here for the good company only, of course.

1st day's posts. Likes Danica Patrick and No-hitters and definitely doesn't like Obama.

Oops, a foot in Obama supporters' mouths. They were spinning McCain's medical records frantically trying to prove he's sickly.

I bet now they will change their minds. They don't have independent thought, after all.

topic: Who said Hillary lost because of sexism? Obama supporters debunk an argument that was never made

you must not have spent much time lurking here, philipsanchez. maybe you should do a DU search for "Hillary and "sexism" so that your post doesn't look like you're just here to spin.

As far as someone famous writing about this - Robin Morgan. for one. Ferraro had to comment about Obama's "dirt off your shoulders" moment as "dismissive" - she doesn't listen to Jay-Z, obviously. bet you don't either.

whatever the case, sock puppet, new recruit, seems several DUers have you pegged for pizza delivery soon.

27. don't forget bin Laden's timely endorsements of Kerry
or all the other times bin Laden conveniently kissed ass for BushCo. not that it matters that bin Laden's daddy was a partner with Poppy Bush in the privately owned Carlyle Group (which is now branching out into mercenary spying.. how corporatist of them!) because, just as is the case with Fidel... oh wait, it's NOT just as the case with Fidel.

Barack Obama has NOTHING to do with Fidel, while the Bush family has a decades-long relationship with the bin Ladens and the House of Saud. but of course, that in no way has any effect on U.S. foreign policy. that's why we attacked Saudi Arabia after 9-11 since 19 of the hijackers came from Saudi Arabia. Oh wait, we attacked Iraq - a nation that had NOTHING to do with 9-11.

oh, wait, I'm supposed to be outraged that a dying dictator says Obama is the most liberal candidate... although Americans already knew that... what does it matter? SCARY OLD FIDEL said it!

so, philipsanchez, what do you think about Bush's connections to bin Laden?

32. Like Him Or Not, Fidel Castro Has Repeated Proved That He Is
Like him or not (I don't. I think he was a tyrannical Marxist-Leninist dictator), I have learned to approach Fidel Castro's writings with wary respect. I don't have to agree with Fidel Castro's viewpoint and I don't have to agree with what Castro writes, but I've found what he's written is usually thoughtful and observant. Fidel Castro has repeatedly proven that considering US--Cuban relations, Western hemispheric relations, and the national strengths and weaknesses of many countries around the Caribbean, compared to guys like George W. Bush, Otto Reich, Ileana Ros_Lehtinen, and John Bolton, Fidel Castro is the smartest son of a b_tch in the room.

Fidel Castro is a Cuban nationalist on his terms. By his lights, Senator Obama would be the best guy the US could elect for President for US--Cuban relations. Senator Obama brings something back to US--Latin American relations I've sorely missed since Mr Bill left office--the idea that the US is the first among equals, not the imperial metropole ruling over subservient client states.

36. He Stayed In Power For Forty Eight Years
Fidel Castro stayed in power for nearly forty eight years. Considering that he ran a successful insurgency, outmanouvered his political opponents after he got to Havana, then stayed in charge of Cuba not only through the rest of the Cold War but until his illness, I think that shows a certain amount of brains and shrewdness. You don't have to like him, you don't have to agree with him, but it would be foolish to ignore what he says and writes.
