Be nice .... it is over.
Hillary's staff has been buying plane tickets, booking vacations, sending out
resumes, and have started packing up the shop.

It is over.

As Clinton Staffers Look Ahead, Some Wonder If Campaign Is Winding Down
Posted by Fernando Suarez| Comments12

(CBS)

From CBS News’ Fernando Suarez:

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO -- As the 17 month campaign winds down with just three contests left, is it possible that this may be Hillary Clinton’s final week in the campaign? Could it be possible that after all this time, the once perceived inevitable Democratic nominee will be bowing out to make way for the junior senator from Illinois? The numbers are important, but visual cues may tell the real story.

<snip>

But it’s not always about the numbers. During the campaign in Puerto Rico, a few interesting things have happened that seem to point to the fact that both Clinton and her staff expect the race to be over soon. For one, almost all of the campaign’s press advance team is on the ground in Puerto Rico (these are the young folks who arrive days before the candidate to help coordinate the events). Some hinted that this was, perhaps, a final gift or vacation for a group of hard-working staffers.

Also, one campaign worker who was recently married, and has been with Clinton from the early snowy mornings in Iowa until now, has been looking forward to a honeymoon. The staffer was seen searching Caribbean destinations over the internet.

Last night, after a full day of campaigning in Puerto Rico, Clinton decided to take her staff to dinner at an upscale steakhouse located inside the hotel where the campaign was staying. What struck some of us in the press, who were eating at the same restaurant but not with Clinton, was that everyone, from the make-up artists to the most senior staffers, was sitting at one big table. Usually, Clinton sits with important political officials or meets with newspaper editors while her staff sits at separate tables or spends time mingling with the press. Last night, there was no contact with the media as the campaign sat as one big family gathered around for perhaps one last supper.

Many Hillary supporters have alrady come to accept this fact. The rest of you will figure it out eventually, probably in the next couple of months.

Time to help the downticket Dems and rebuild the party for 2012.

39. You live in Ohio. There's so much you could do.
Help register new voters. Help convince disgruntled Clinton supporters to get on board. Volunteer with your local Democratic Party.

If you choose not to do those things because you are bitter, that's your choice. But don't say that there's nothing you can do, that it's beyond your control. It's not beyond your control, or anyone else who is sitting around moping that they think Obama is unelectable. You have the power to help him get elected, if you choose to get over your disappointment about Hillary and take advantage of it.

Edited on Mon May-26-08 10:07 PM by scarletwoman
Do you really think that only Clinton supporters are aware of how hard the fight will be going into November?

Can you not conceive of the possibility that all the good, long-time Dems who are supporting Obama are just as aware of the dangers that lie ahead, and are just as determined to see their candidate successfully navigate these dangers?

And are therefore prepared to fight, and fight damn hard. Are you saying that you'd rather see our fight fail than help out?

Because I know that I'm be going to part of this fight, I can live with my choice with a clear conscience no matter what happens.

If you refuse to help, will you be able to say the same?

Carter and Sen. Dorgan have said that come June 3rd that tons of Super Delegates

Obama is now only 49 Delegates away from 2025.

And according to CBS the staff is making other plans.

I forget who but one of her top persons has signed a book deal for late summer.

She just doesn't have any money to pay a staff and no reason to keep piling up the debt when there are no campaigns left after next week. She is still intending to take this to the convention. She doesn't need a big staff for that. Just a few lawyers, I suppose.

24. I disagree. If she intends to present herself as a viable candidate to the convention, she will have
to ramp up her campaign. She would have to take on McCain between the primaries and the convention, and she would have to match Obama's energy and appearances. She would not be able to hibernate her campaign and then expect to have any impact at the convention.

40. That's not what she is trying to do
She is a Clinton. Bill survived for 8 years with good lawyering and staying one step ahead of the cops. That is how they think. They are only thinking about how they can wrestle the nomination away from Obama right now. If they were to do that, then their "Comeback kid" hubris tells them that they would be able to get it together against McCain.

It is the same disconnection with reality that has her oblivious to the fact that Obama has won that also makes her think she could fire off an effective GE campaign with no people and no money.

Don't try to analyze this the way a rational person would approach it.

She and Bill honestly believe that they can make this stupid case about the popular vote, including her Michigan numbers, giving Obama no credit for Michigan support, and giving him no credit for caucus representation, and that the superdelagates will buy it. Even Hillary's strongest supporters (other than the Hillaryis44.com whack jobs) know the Superdelegates aren't buying and of that. But they just go on oblivious with the attitude that, if nobody has shot me yes, I must still be alive.

In Senator Obama's own words:
"What I would want to do is to have my Justice Department and my Attorney General immediately review the information that's already there and to find out are there inquiries that need to be pursued. I can't prejudge that because we don't have access to all the material right now. I think that you are right, if crimes have been committed, they should be investigated. You're also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt because I think we've got too many problems we've got to solve.

So this is an area where I would want to exercise judgment -- I would want to find out directly from my Attorney General -- having pursued, having looked at what's out there right now -- are there possibilities of genuine crimes as opposed to really bad policies. And I think it's important-- one of the things we've got to figure out in our political culture generally is distinguishing betyween really dumb policies and policies that rise to the level of criminal activity. You know, I often get questions about impeachment at town hall meetings and I've said that is not something I think would be fruitful to pursue because I think that impeachment is something that should be reserved for exceptional circumstances. Now, if I found out that there were high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws, engaged in coverups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law -- and I think that's roughly how I would look at it."
