Twenty-two murders this weekend
Edited on Tue May-27-08 11:17 AM by Sundoggy
How did things go for you this Memorial Day? For we who live on the border, we watched and listened in terror as TWENTY TWO PEOPLE WERE MURDERED IN JUAREZ THIS WEEKEND in drug cartel violence, including two MORE police officers. Anyone know how many people died in, oh, I don't know, Lebanon, over the weekend?

An email was circulated telling people to stay inside, not go to clubs, etc., because this would be the bloodiest weekend in Juarez history.

Over THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE have been killed in the violence THIS YEAR, including many police officers. It's so bad the Mexican Army is trying to keep order. In a city I can SEE from my house!

Heve you heard anything about this in the media? I didn't think so. Why isn't this news? And how did this end up in Primaries? Sorry!!!

4. Are we as liberals afraid to talk about this?
Are we afraid it will be used as ammunition in the illegal immigrant wars?

And, just to be even-handed about it, SHOULD it be?

7. I don't think anyone is afraid of the topic
I'm guessing that many here don't discuss it because they just don't know much about it. Media coverage is, well, scant, and online coverage is not much better. In addition, the perception seems to be that there are no "good guys" in this situation. People just don't get as fired up when the casualties are not innocents.

I don't have much to add myself. My understanding is that the calling in of the Mexican military has made things worse, not better, due to widespread corruption in it's ranks. I'm told the military commanders are accepting payola from the gangs, and as a result are very selective in who they go after. What is your take on this?

5. As long as there are millions of dollars to be made in drugs
There will be drug wars. Take the profit motive out of drugs, no wars.

6. That's right. Regulate and tax
Addiction HAS to be treated as a medical problem, not a legal one.

8. My friends from across the border
tell me the local governments are so corrupt and powerful in the border towns it's nearly impossible to control drug trafficking activities.
Local officials frightened and paid off by drug lords. Local kids used for selling by getting them hooked. It's apparently terrifying and another reason why so many want to come here. I live in southern, southern, California and it's amazing how many folks want to come here just to find peace and protect their kids. I live in an area that would be lost without immigrant workers.
